By default, instead of doing something useful, the Ctrl-Alt-Numpad key combination in Gnome 3 shoves a window in the specified direction across the entire workspace. These shortcuts do not show in the Gnome 3 keyboard settings panel; they're just there, and they're in the way.
How can I get this behavior back in Ubuntu 17.10?
There is a serious bug with the intel GPU drivers shipping with Zesty that causes random soft locks and data loss multiple times per day due to double frees. Intel fixed the issue on their end in February as part of a 25-commit patch series and there doesn't seem to be any obvious way to cherry-pick the fix onto the kernel tip. I'd still have the problem even if I compiled my own kernel from ltorvalds' HEAD.
However, yakkety's 4.8.x Ubuntu kernels work perfectly, and as long as yakkety is supported, I can keep getting kernel updates if only I:
I've attempted to achieve (3) by Forbidding version packages in Aptitude, but apparently you can only forbid a single version of a package.
I can also put the package on hold, but then I will probably miss out on security upgrades from unattended-upgrades.
Finally I can do this manually, which adds a bit of toil in telling aptitude that no, I really do want to downgrade everything and remove the new things and only keep the old things.
How can I achieve this?

I have a cronjob setup on my machine. Sometimes, this job misbehaves. I'd like to read its output locally with the mail unix program.
If I attempt to run mail, command-not-found suggests I install mailutils, and when I do, Ubuntu starts a wonderful journey into setting up an actual SMTP server. Eeeeek!
I just want my "mail" to sit in /var/spool or whatever.
How can I achieve this?
My computer seems stuck with a bad case of an hardcoded proxy. I have already tried setting no proxy in the Ubuntu configuration utility and applying the change system-wide. Grepping /etc for the proxy gives no results.
I tried seeing what processes do have this configuration variables:

The first process that gets highlighted is upstart, which is lanuched by lightdm (not highlighted).
Why is lightdm launching upstart with a proxy configured? How can I prevent this?
I am running Ubuntu from a live session in order to see if I can reproduce this bug. Since though I'm still supposed to get stuff done, I'm trying to also do that. As a result I have to log onto corporate resources, and lock my screen while I'm not at my desktop.
I set a password on the default ubuntu/999 user account, but Ctrl-Alt-L still does not lock the screen, it merely blacks out the monitor.
How can I have a proper screen lock? Maybe I should just install xscreensaver...
I know I can use this to remove a package but keep configuration:

I know I can also use this to remove a package and discard its configuration files:

But what if I want to keep a package but discard its configuration?
Context: I did something wrong with Network Manager and it's started segfaulting on a loop, and while sudo service network-manager stop works, I also kinda want to use WiFi. If this was just any old boring package, I could just purge and reinstall it. That's obviously not an option for Network Manager, since ubuntu-desktop depends on it.
Torrent files are increasingly being replaced by magnet links, "mini torrent files" in concise and plain-text form that can be simply copy pasted around. Those link to the actual .torrent file "in the BitTorrent cloud", without relying on servers that may be temporarily overtaxed ("OMG NEW UBUNTU MUST GET NOW") or simply offline.
Does Canonical offer magnet links for their Torrent distributions? Where can one find them?

As noted by many people, Windows 8's UEFI requirements might will won't get in the way of installing Linux (or whatever), as the replacement bootloader will also need to be signed somehow. Some systems All systems will let you disable the signature requirement, but the feature might be hidden to disable or you might not be willing to give up on the benefits of a secure bootloader.
Is it necessary to replace the bootloader in the first place? To keep ourselves to software that's gone golden, how can I install Ubuntu 11.04 using Windows 7's own bootloader?

I don't know how to reproduce this problem, because I don't regularly play music or sound. All I know is that, sometimes, I'll load a video (from youtube or from a local file) and there will be no sound.

To do this, I need to install the nVidia drivers first (sigh).
To do this, I need changes to persist a reboot.
To do this, I need to really install Ubuntu on a USB key.
How do you do that?
I tried to make a USB key from Testdrive, then boot from it, then choose "Install Ubuntu." The installer refused to install to the installation media itself.
I tried, from my installed copy of Ubuntu:
sudo kvm /dev/sdb --cdrom .cache/testdrive/iso/ubuntu_natty-desktop-i386.iso
...but the installer didn't detect the disk properly.
I would like closing the laptop lid to be a no-op. How can I do that?
I've tried to set up a VPN server on my copy of Ubuntu 10.10 with insuccess. Community material on the topic is little and poorly documented (clients only information, scenario-specific information, WIP pages, ...)
What I need in specific is tunnelling of traffic over HTTPS to go around a proxy server that only allows HTTP and HTTPS protocols.
What I did try is following this ubuntugeek.com guide. I've gone through each step (here are my config files), set up an account through DynDns.com, set up port forwarding and set up a VPN on my copy of Windows 7:
I've also turned on logging on the Windows 7 side of things and attempted to connect from an unfiltered location. From the logs, it seems like the connection is dropped right after authentication takes place.
Where did I go wrong? Was there a guide on the Ubuntu official resources I could've tried instead?

Is there any way wall messages can reach the desktop via, say, notification.
I need to get a password from my Chrome install on my Windows 7 partition. The Windows version of Chrome, however, uses Windows' own crypto API to protect this data (I doubt Wine has a compatible implementation). This means I'd have to reboot, get in, get the password and get out, wasting ten minutes in the process.
It'd be faster if I could just virtualize what's on my Windows partition!

Often, I find issues with the internals of Ubuntu and I don't know how to effectively assign the bug to the right project/audience.
Take this bug for example, regarding multiple monitor support. I'd like to file this bug against Gnome, but I don't know which of the many Gnome projects apply here (or is it actually a problem with X? or gtk?). I can't even search for gnome-related projects or packages, as Launchpad complains:

I've tried asking on #ubuntu and #ubuntu+1 but received no help due to the very high amount of ongoing activity: IRC just doesn't scale.
As a result I had to mark the bug generically against Ubuntu and now it's just one of a dozen emails that the poor souls subscribed to the project receive on a hourly basis. I doubt the bug will get any attention this way.
How can I effectively target a bug with non-frontend components of Ubuntu? Where can I get help with targeting such bugs?

Those sound like pretty strong arguments... to me, and indeed I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 for a month now roughly. However, most people prefer to make the jump with everybody else on release day.
What are the rational reasons for that?
