In all apps that use audio the sound level is very low.
As soon as I open the audio controls such as PulseAudio volume control, the sound seems to jump up by about 50%. If I use zoom, just by having that volume control app open, my workmates can hear me clearly. With it closed, the volume drops below 50% after 2 seconds.
How do I fix this?
I have tried setting:
flat-volumes = no
And restarting, but that made no difference.
My wife's OSX laptop won't boot. I've pulled the drive out and plugged it into a USB adapter and can see it from my Ubuntu laptop.

And I should point out that the drive is a Samsung 840 Evo. I think I need to upgrade the firmware as I hear there was a bug. Could the corruption be related?
With a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 and the Nouveau drivers I was able to get 3 monitors working perfectly with 2 monitors attached via DVI to a Geforce 680 and a 3rd monitor attached to a Geforce 980-TI.
However, this is not quite a suitable configuration. I need CUDA so I need the to install the propriety drivers from NVIDIA.
After doing so, only two monitors are working. However, using nvidia-settings I was able to enable the third monitor attached to the 980-TI by creating a new X Screen 1 and saving the xorg.conf file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
But after rebooting the 3rd monitor is simply black despite nvidia settings telling me it should be on. And the new Devices => Displays panel in the Ubuntu Settings manager shows only two monitors. With the Nouveau drivers installed three displays were shown here.

I have some mp4 video files that come from my iPad. I am wanting to play them on Linux. By default, the player doesn't recognise the format.

I'd like to use the command line sftp client and sshfs and have been given a filezilla ppk file. How do I extract the keys into a format that works with sftp, openssh?
I tried just copying the portions out of the ppk and into a private pem file but it didn't work. Running openssl rsa -in keyfile.pem on it shows that it's not an RSA key.

How do I do this?
Due to this bug 1674930 my Amazon G2 and P2 instances have stopped working correctly. I need the 367 driver. When you attempt to install 367, it says it is actually installing the 375 driver which is incompatible with the G2 and P2 hardware. The previous 367 version ran fine.
When I run apt-cache search nvidia-367
It shows it as being a "Transitional package for nvidia-375". What does that mean? I expected when I install 367 it would install 367 not 375.
How do I lock it at 367?
Naturally I have tried installing nvidia-361, but that claims to be a transitional package to 367 which as you guessed is a transitional package to 375 and so no matter which one is chosen it ends up trying to install 375 which is broken for me.
Is there a way to stop it transitioning and just stop at the driver I choose? I tried apt-mark hold nvidia-367 which did not work.
Any options appreciated.

Such a simple question, why is it so difficult to get working?

I'm really quite happy for this question to be a community wiki but I don't know how to do that. I'd just like to know how for the benefit of the entire Ubuntu community, we go about setting this up. Once and for all.
It's such a common protocol and yet Ubuntu seems to be seriously lagging on support for it. Even though it works out of the box for Windows and OSX. It seems we have to jump hoops in Ubuntu.
Could someone please share your secret on how you personally got L2TP + IPSec working with a pre-shared key? I think a reliable working answer will give many Ubuntu users rest at night :)

This looked promising but doesn't work. I get the below errors. Besides that, it's deprecated now because it uses openswan which is no longer supported. Now we have strongswan (Maybe the Ubuntu developers need to switch to workingswan!)
I wonder if some of these errors are because I'm using an AMD CPU?

These all involved editing .conf files. None of which worked out either.
I get the "Aw, snap" error in Google Chrome as soon as it starts up on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
These are the things I've tried to resolved it.

It won't even allow browsing chrome:plugins etc. It's as though chrome or the chrome packages are just completely broken on Ubuntu 14.04. But other people have it running. I don't see anything obvious.
My current solution is - use firefox.
I wish I could find a fix. I'm wanting to run chrome for testing.

I downloaded the latest deb of synergy from the synergy website.
When I run it I get an installer and get the option to enable the password etc.
However, now I want to reset the password but I can't find the configuration.
Where does synergy store it's configuration? there is no /etc/synergy.conf or any synergy.conf file anywhere.

I've tried copying the /etc/ssl folder across but that didn't resolve it. Neither did installing ssl-cert.
How do I resolve this?
Under a chroot environment, is it possible to build a kernel module without having the kernel installed, just the headers?
It sounds like something you wouldn't want to do, but in my case I do. I've got a script that automates creating an environment for netbooting which also includes the initrd.img created by mkinitramfs and copied to the tftp server afterward.
For example, if the target PC also includes a radeon card I want fglrx. If it's nvidia I want the nvidia package. Those who run/customise the build script may not have those cards installed physically into my PC.
I am needing to compile an app under an older version of CentOS. I once found a way of doing a debootstrap style process for it.
Can anyone recall the name of the program and how you set it up for chroot?
When using the tool xen-create-image I get an error with the debootstrap process.

The output: Illegal instruction (core dumped) Seems to imply some fundamental problem with debconf or something. Is there a way to work around this problem so I can get the debootstrap script to run without errors?
I have recently upgraded to Ringtail and for some reason flash isn't working on either Chrome or Chromium. It works in firefox but I prefer Chrome as my browser so switching to firefox when a website containing flash appears is a bit annoying.
According to just about every source, flash it built into Chrome and should just work even on Ubuntu. I tried removing chrome and reinstalling it, but the problem persists.
I've checked about://plugins and flash is enabled. Yet when you visit http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/
What I see is "No plugin available to display this content".

How do I get flash working in Chrome or Chromium?
I've just discovered after installing Ubuntu 12.10 that there seems to be new device names for eth0...ethX.
However, I haven't managed to find any documentation that explains the new naming convention in Ubuntu. Can someone explain what p25p1 actually means and what advantages it has over eth0..ethX?
I'm needing to custom compile a kernel to enable some very specific hardware features that are not on by default and have to be compiled in. I started following this guide but it seems to be slightly outdated for 12.04 onwards as some commands fail with missing source packages.

I'm trying to get grub2 to boot by xen image off of a USB thumb drive. However, it's not working for some reason.
My original grub entry was the following, and this works off of an LVM partitions HDD:

The way I understand this is that set root='(hd0,1)' sets the root environment variable to be the first hard disk, first partition. Now, what does the search line do?
According to the grub2 documentation for the search command and if I'm understanding it correctly, if a disk with that uuid is found it will set root to that uuid... or is that the first partition on that disk?? so if it doesn't find it does that mean it defaults to (hd0,1)?
This is currently not working for me it says I need to load a multiboot kernel first. So it's obviusly not finding xen.gz. Could it be that I need to remove the --no-floppy? I know some BIOS' treat USB thumb drives as floppy disks. Although on my system it's coming up as /dev/hda. If it insert a hard disk it's /dev/hdb. Is this still going to work? What should I set the root= line to given that LVM is not installed and /dev/mapper/xenserver-root doesn't exist. I've seen some people set this to /dev/hdb1 but I'd like it to figure this out automatically or be generated by update-grub.
How would I get this working? I've tried lots of options, but obviously not the right one.
I've been building a live Ubuntu server (10.04 LTS) to run off a thumb drive and it's nearly there.
However, I've gotten stuck at one step.
I need to run update-grub but it's complaining about:
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?).
My fstab file contains:

I'm getting some errors in my xen logs and googling has turned up that it's related to iproute2.
I found through google that the key is to enable CONFIG_IP_ADVANCED_ROUTER=y in my kernel config. It turns out, that it is. This link provided more clues.
However, all of these options are enabled in my running kernel, but not as statically compiled modules but as Linux loadable kernel modules.
I'm guessing I just need to add the appropriate module names to /etc/modules
