Waht is the feasibility of running an ubuntu proxy server on a lan in order to better implement family parental controls on a network of windows 10 and imac pcs?

Ie will an ubuntu server be a suitable solution for this on an exclusively windows and imac home network?

My thoughts are to:

• use Linux as the basis
• be able to selectively add restrictions via device or even better, user level controls (therefore users on any device can have personalised restrictions...meaning my wife doesnt have to contact me to allow her access to one of the kids devices outside the preset time restrictions on a particular device)

What are the pros and cons of doing this?

i am new to using snap and rocketchat-server.

I installed it using snap and initially it worked fine. however, I wanted to install auto ssl. that would not work so i changed /etc/hosts file from 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 host.fqdn

to 127.0.0.1 localhost host.fqdn

Installed Auto SSL Cannot get rocketchat to work in browser or apps...i get connection refused (even if i disable firewall on my VPS providers network)

I get the following from logs...

Mongodb is running no problems. i am running on latest ubuntu.

I am not sure how to fix this? Or problem solve it for that matter?

EDIT.... ok i have found that if i shut down rocketchat-caddy, i can then restart rocketchat-server.

However, irrespective of whether or not caddy is now running, as soon as i browser either http or https rocketchat-server fails immediately.

any ideas on why?

i have a wordpress site that uses Duplicator plugin. In order for this plugin to work it needs php7.0-zip

I have tried everything i know and dozens of old forum posts on this kind of thing...nothing is working.

I have uploaded a backup wordpress directory to web server after the existing one was inadvertantly deleted.

I dont know why, however, the way in which the backup has archived seems weird and i am unable to get the damn thing to decompress properly.

At best, the methods i am currently using decompresses all wordpress directories/subdirectories but ALL the files inside them remain compressed with ".gz" file extension.

there are more than 500 files in subfolders to perform this task on.

Can someone provide me with a simple and straight forward answer on how to achieve this task?

I can get part of the way with the following code, however, it won't go recursively into non compressed subfolders looking for more ".gz" files to decompress (note...folders/subfolders are already decompressed but not files in them).

I want to install boxbilling which runs php5 Ubuntu 16.04 currently has php 7.2

what is the procedure for doing this? (the parent server has other apache websites on it that run php7 so i dont want to disable or remove php7)

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 on Google Cloud Compute. After completing this tutorial on sending Email with SendGrid, I am getting an error when testing sendgrid in command line:

Now if I look at this and try to apply some logic to it, I believe that the problem is there is no relayhost_map for my user@server3.<mydomain>.com.au?

Is the relay map missing for the server, or for the user? I seem to get the same error no matter which user I am sending a test email with (I have tried 3 of them that are active).

I am not sure what to do to fix this?

I have been playing around with 3 google cloud compute instances using webmin/virtualmin (web hosting and email), Vestacp (hosting only), and ISPconfig (hosting only) control panels.

The ISPConfig instance has a static external ip address, however the other 2 at this stage are dhcp.

All 3 instances are using a dynamically assigned internal ip addresses, although i have not yet seen any of those ip addresses change in 6 months of testing and restarting and deleting and re-deploying. Whenever i delete an instance, the same internal ip sequence is used (ie whatever is the next lowest unassigned available number is re-added as internal ip address).

I am having some problems with forcing google cloud to bloodywell stop changing my hostname -f configuration in my /etc/hosts file.

It should read

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
10.x.x.x server1.foo.com.au server1

(where x is my internal ip address, "foo" is my domain name)

However, on any 3 of my instances, as soon as i reboot the instance, google cloud adds its own code back in again on next restart. ie by default google cloud keeps changing the file to read the same 2 "# added by Google" lines as shown below

This is really causing me problems and i have no idea on which is the best way around it.

-Do i do it from within google cloud DNS API? -setup a static internal ip address in google cloud network settings? -setup a script that continues to check for a change to this file and immediately replace any changes google cloud attempts to make? -or do i need to change the metadata information on the last line of my hosts file so it does not have "...metadata.google.internal # Added by Google" line?

At present option 1 above is not working. As soon as i enable the DNS API then try to enter it i get a "failed to load" error from within my google cloud console. This is a flaming pain in the ass!!! (i have sent a support request to google...who knows how long it will take for an answer)

I am setting up a new test Ubuntu 16.04 server with wordpress and avada.

The server is running php 7.0 and in the avada system status dialogue I am getting an error saying that ZipArchive is not installed on the server. However, I have installed php7.0-zip and php7.0-gd.

What am I missing?

i am attempting to run virtualmin on Google cloud engine. I have used the install script and the installation appears to be ok, however i cannot access virtualmin on port <webserveripadress>:10000.

I setup a domain and pointed it at server using an A record and http scan is working no problem displaying the apache default page.

The hostname has been set to mydomain.com.au

An MXToolbox scan shows on ports 22 and 80 are open and port 10000 is not on the list at all.

When i check ufw i can see that tcp port 10000 is enabled, however i simply cannot get this to work. I have reinstalled this half a dozen times with different OS on GCE all to no avail.

Can someone give me a point by point procedure on exactly how i get this working on Google Cloud Compute Ubuntu 16, including setting up the firewall and iptables.

I am having problems installing, upgrading and deleting Wordpress plugins on my VM-Virtual Box LAMP server.

I have read that the issue has something to do with permissions that are assigned in my var/www/wp-content folder.

I am a windows user and rather new to ubuntu terminal. I am finding that so many so called "experts" here provide all sorts of code in order to fix this problem in the terminal, however, when i follow those commands in the terminal i seem to do more harm than good to my ubuntu instillation and the wordpress problem is not being resolved (and it also seems a lot of others encounter similar issues).

Question

how i can bulk change directory, folder and file permissions in Ubuntu using the GUI. (It can be done quite easily in windows GUI surely Ubuntu has a similar option)

I have a windows 7 system.
On this system i am running a VM Virtual box LAMP Server with Ubuntu 12.04,apache2, mysql and phpmyadmin... which is accessable via the internet.

I installed Wordpress CMS and it is working ok. I am able to add new posts, pages, and change themes.

When i attempt to upload media i get the following error

file391.jpg has failed to upload due to an error
Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2013/11. Is its parent directory writable by the server?*

When i go to the parent directory and look at the permissions i notice that the ownership of the folder is root.

Do i change owner? Should i create a new user or user group called worpress and give it ownership???

Not sure how best to do this on a Web server.
