Yesterday I upgraded my Ubuntu from 23.10 to 24.04. After successful upgrade, I suspended the system and went to sleep. Today, I noticed that the system stuck at login page. I rebooted the system and noticed that the boot process moves forward but instead of showing the login page, it shows me the list of started services. I didn't notice anything wrong in that log.

I switched to tty2 and by running systemctl status gdm noticed that it failed to start. And the result was similar to the screenshot of this question.

Recently, after each upgrade I get these lines at the end of the process:

I have searched for the file in kernel repository but couldn't find the missing file vega20_ta.bin.

System specs:

• Kubuntu 19.04
• Kernel 5.0.0-17-generic

I have migrated from Kubuntu to Xubuntu (18.04). Now, my biggest problem is that I cannot logout from my session. Regardless of using GUI or terminal approach, I experience session referesh in which all my applications are still open.

I didn't have this problem when I was on Kubuntu.

I want to give access to some person to see or read some materials on a system without letting him copy the material out of the system. So, I am thinking of blocking USB ports or at least force it to be mounted only in readonly mode.

I have gone through some solutions but all needed update-initfs -u and then system reboot.

How else I get the work done?

I have several RAR file which contain several files including few with Persian names. I tried xarchiver software. I can open the archive but if I want to extract the file, it gives error without even extracting files without Persian name.

I tried terminal solution by installing and trying unrar and unrar-free. I tried to extract using:

unrar-free --extract archive.rar

and it comes with output like this (I just show small part of the output):

It is for a while I am trying to find a way to add another entry to grub2 which takes me to text mode.

I have already seen lots of posts but either they are for make a permanent change (which makes grub always take me to text mode) or they are too old and not working on newer version (like this one)

I hope I was able to make it clear what I am looking for. I want to keep the current entry for booting into graphical mode but also I want to have an entry for booting into text mode.

Any suggestion?

It seems this is a common problem. There are many questions regarding this problem even in this site, but all of them are related to Nvidia which is not useful for me.

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 64bit on my Lenovo 500G with a switchable graphic card. I have disabled switchable graphic from Bios. So I am on my intel built-in GPU.

I don't know since when, but it is for a while I am not seeing Ubuntu Logo in splash Screen while booting up. In grub, splash is mentioned. While shutting down, I can see the Logo.

I want to Tor in terminal. This is what I used to do and it was working without any issue:

• running Tor Browser
• running torify or torsocks before the command in terminal

But it is for a while that this is not working. I don't remember if this is happening after some specific change in my system or not. I haven't had any major and noticeable change in it.

Perhaps the following lines can help for knowing the issue:

Regarding the following command and result:

$ systemd-analyze blame | grep -P '(mysql|php|apache)'
         12.936s mysql.service
          8.815s php7.0-fpm.service
          6.515s apache2.service

I want to remove LAMP from startup so my system boot faster. Since I don't use LAMP all the time, I would prefer to run them whenever I need rather than keeping them running all the time, especially during boot.

I have checked some other questions here (including How to stop mysql from running at boot time? and how to stop apache2, mysql from starting automatically as computer starts? both asked in 2011) But all of them are old.

Is there any difference between using those method and the way it should be done in 16.04? (the reason I ask this question is as far as I know, Ubuntu has moved towards Systemd which was not the case at 2011!)

By mistake, I overwrote /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libudev.so.1 and replaced it with a link.

You may have a look on this:

How can I bring the libudev.so.1 back?

Running Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit, I have installed Tor-Browser from Ubuntu Repository (via terminal). But when I run it, it runs as Firefox. While its icon in dash is its own, when it runs, it shows Firefox icon while switching between windows. On the top panel also it shows Firefox web browser instead of Tor-Browser.

This is the current content of /usr/share/applications/torbrowser.desktop:

If I open a normal Firefox window, both Firefox and Tor-Browser appear under Firefox icon.

Before migrating to 16.04, I didn't have this problem in 15.10 in which I installed Tor-Browser from its website.

I'm using Ubuntu desktop 16.04 (upgraded from 15.10).

I had installed phpmyadmin from by apt-get install phpmyadmin. It works if I go to localhost/phpmyadmin but I cannot log into it as root.

I have searched a lot for it. I have found many sources in which they suggest to alter /etc/phpmyadmin/config.inc.php and replace the user and password with 'root' and '' (empty for password). But my config.inc.php is different from theirs. For example in my file, there is no line for user and password and it seems it gets it automatically from another file which is /etc/phpmyadmin/config-db.php. Despite this, I have changed the user and password in that file, but now I get this error:

#1698 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost'

What I should do?

I know the time in dmesg is the time since boot. But my specific question is this time is calculated at the start or end of the process mentioned in the line?

Why this is important?
take this example:

If the time, is calculated after finishing the process, the process in the 3rd line should be taken responsible for slow boot.
But if time is calculated from the beginning of the process, the 2nd line should be taken responsible for it.

But it become more complicated when we check dmesg long after boot.
Take this for example:

I see many times there is confusion about which line in dmesg should be hold responsible for a slow boot.

How can we make sense of time in dmesg?

I just turned on my laptop (using Ubuntu 15.10 64-bit) and checked syslog for today's logs. From total

Why ~%92 of my syslog is filled with such messages?

I am using Ubuntu 15.10. I checked dmesg and noticed a 30 second gap in the this part:

I couldn't find any resources in this regard. What to do?

Update:

I disabled IPv6. still I see 13 second delay in this line:

I'm using Ubuntu 15.10 which uses Files v3.14.2 as file manager. This app cannot show Persian characters in folder name on its title bar. Other apps (VLC ...) have no problem in similar cases.

What would be the reason behind this? Is it a bug?

As it is visible, there is no Persian/Farsi locale installed on my system. So Ubuntu could not mange to show it properly.

I went to System Setting > Language Support and activated Persian from the list. After rebooting the laptop, the problem was solved. Now in the output of locale -a command, I see two more lines:

fa_IR
fa_IR.utf8

Yet the question remains if the problem occurred because Persian language was not activated. If yes, why was I not able to see the Persian titles only in the Gnome Files and only when it was not maximized.

Does that mean it is a bug?

I have problem in downloading new profiles in Kdenlive.
In all cases (Wipes, render profile, project profile, title), nothing is being downloaded and I only see 'loading data' as you see in the screenshot.

What is the problem and what is the solution for it?
