I am unable to run Ubuntu 17.04 on my Lenovo Yoga 910 because the kernel (4.10.0-33-generic) has, or is missing, some components related to the kabylake intel-graphics card. The result is constant screen tearing.

I lucked into finding out that the default Debian stretch (and Kali) kernel 4.9.0-3-amd64 resolves this issue. I would like to install that kernel on an Ubuntu 17.04 install that I have running on another machine. How do I do so?

For Ubuntu mainline kernels, I would just go here and download the three .deb files for the kernel version I want (i.e., linux-headers-[version]-all.deb; linux-headers-[version]-amd64.deb; and linux-image-[version]-amd64.deb). Then I would install the .deb files using either gdebi or sudo dpkg -i *.deb.

Is there an analogous install route for the Debian stretch kernel?? I have tried but there seem to be a lot of depends, and I can't get right combination of files and install sequence. Here is an image of the files I downloaded from Debian, but could not get right.

Several users (one, two, three, four, five) have reported that Intel graphics cards cause severe screen tearing/flickering on Ubuntu >= 16.10. The oft-proposed "solution" is to add the boot parameter i915.enable_rc6=0.

However, while fixing the screen flickering/tearing, this "solution" causes the fan to run constantly (as in it never, ever turns off) and at an excessively high speed. I am posting this question to see if anyone has a remedy to the fan issue (or, in the alternative, to the flickering/tearing issue but without causing the fan issue).

For completeness, I am running Ubuntu 16.10/17.04/17.10 using kernel 4.11.0-10-generic on a Lenovo 910 (Kabylake) and my graphics card is VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 5916 (rev 02).

Note: I just confirmed that this problem still exists with the upstream kernel (v4.13.0-041300rc4). Reverting the kernel to the 16.04 LTS kernel fixes the screen tearing, but that is just a workaround. I recently (09.03.2017) tried the default Debian install with kernel 4.9.0-3-amd64, and there is no screen flickering (though the screen is rotated 90 degrees).

Note 2: Using the boot parameter i915.enable_rc6=0 leads to system degredation over extended use. I tried to watch a streaming video for 3 hours and the machine starting acting sluggish and unresponsive.

Note 3: I filed a bug report.

Note 4: This may not be relevant, but the screen tearing stops completely when the pointing device (trackpad) or the keyboard is in use.

I just upgraded to 17.04 from 16.04 via the two-step. The upgraded Nautilus, version 3.20.4, does not appear to have the option to display icons in the contextual menus -- as explained and demonstrated in this post.

I looked in Dconf Editor, and org.gnome.desktop. no longer has an interface option. That is where the icons were surfaced in previous versions.

Here is a similar post that shows the problem for another version of Nautilus, but the sole proposed solution didn't work.

Does anyone know how to get the contextual menus back? Nautilus-Actions Configuration Tool is close to my favorite tool, and custom icons make my experience more fluid and efficient.

I installed WPS Office for the first time. It is amazing, so much so that I wonder if there is some hidden adware that I can't remove (e.g., what is Docer).

That said, my issue is that the background on WPS Spreadsheets for all sheets is this weird brown color. I've tried changing the Page Layout > Themes and Colors. I've also tried to Format Cells. But there does not appear (or I can't find) a way to change the default background color. Is there a way?

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu (Unity) 16.10 from 16.04. Now, I did screw the pooch during the upgrade by shutting my laptop and causing a mid-upgrade suspend. But I was able to use single-user login to fix the messed package upgrade via terminal.

I say that only for background. My issue is that certain windows are not drawing entirely correctly. See the attached pictures of Dconf Editor and Speedcrunch.

Also, I can't get icons to appear on contextual menus (whereas they did work in 16.04), and the icons for Nautilus appear just a little too small.

Based on this link, I am thinking the issue is with CCSM, as during the upgrade all of my CCSM settings were erased. But I tried the two suggestions in the link to no avail.

Any ideas?

My PPTP VPN stopped working on (I think) a recent upgrade running Ubuntu 16.04 on an Asus laptop. I don't connect to VPN too often, so I'm not sure when it happened. But I know that it previously worked under the current setting, which are as shown in a similar thread here.

I have tried this with multiple external (hosted) VPNs, and get the same errors. I also tried my own dd-wrt PPTP VPN, and it worked.

Anyone know how to fix this or what went sideways?

I wanted to move some of the Nautilus scripts, like print, edit as root, convert to pdf from the "Scripts" folder in the contextual menu (~/.local/share/nautilus/scripts) to their own entry.

When I select a sample file and run the script "edit as root" from the contextual menu>Scripts>Edit as root entry, it works.

When I create a Nautilus-Actions Configuration Tool entry for the same exact script (same file, same location) and select the same exact sample file, it opens a blank file.

I've tried this with printing too. Same result. It has something to do with designating the file that is selected. But that seems weird since I am running the same exact script, just via Nautilus-Actions.

How do I tell Nautilus-Actions to run the scripts, using the selected file?

I have a brand spanking new Chromecast Audio. I can cast to it from my Android phone using cast-enable apps like Spotify and Pandora. I can also cast to it from my Android phone using the awesome AirAudio app.

I can cast to the Chromecast Audio from Ubuntu 16.04 using either (A) Chrome's google cast plugin; or (B) mkchromecast. But the former is inconvenient (no media key support) and the latter seems to have huge latency issues (around 27 seconds) -- and it is also seems to require WiFi as opposed to allowing an ethernet connection.

What I can't do, is find the Chromecast Audio using pulseaudio-dlna. Pulseaudio-dlna simply does not see the Chromecast at all. This is unexpected because the pulseaudio-dlna does find my AVR receiver and my DirecTV receiver. And as noted above, other Ubuntu apps can find the Chromecast Audio. After reading the usage notes for pulseaudio-dlna, I checked for a firewall issue -- but the Ubuntu 16.04 computer does not have the firewall on.

Any ideas what is going wrong here?

I'm on an Asus laptop running 16.04. Lately, after I close the lid (set to suspend on close lid), I am intermittently getting very odd artifacts across the screen. Essentially, most icons are missing, moved, or misplaced. In addition, almost all text is missing or chopped in most (but not all) applications, including the Unity GUI.

Any idea what be creating these visual errors? It can be recovered through a log out or restart. But I can't see the words in the menu bar.

After upgrading from 15.10 to 16.04, when I switch wifi networks using the network manager applet, all networking capability is lost. Before selecting the different wifi network, the wifi works perfectly. After I lose connection, I can restart the wifi using sudo systemctl restart network-manager.service. But I can't switch networks.

At the bottom of this post is a screenshot showing what the applet looks like after the attempt to switch networks: no wifi networks are visible from the applet's list, and the applet reports "device not ready."

Please note that this is unrelated to the commonly reported bug that wifi does not work on resume from suspend. There are at least three solutions to that issue here. I tried all of those suggestions, plus I also installed network-manager_1.2.0-0, all to no avail.

The issue I am requesting help on is specifically that wifi completely stops working whenever I attempt to switch networks.

I am adding a bounty and the results from the wifi script on ubuntuforums. Also, please note that I installed iwlwifi-7260-17.

I also am aware of the suggestions in bug report #1574347 (I posted on that report on post #8, although I think that the bug report is for the suspend-resume issue not my changing APs issue). In all events, I tried the suggestions to upgrade network-manager and network-manager-gnome (see post #42), to no avail.

I also am aware of bug report #1311257 and the suggested script to fix that bug. I implemented that script and regressed back to the suspend-resume issue.

I was trying to remove old kernels using Synaptic, and something went very wrong. Now, I get this error in Synaptic if I try to fix it:

Synaptic says I need to install the linux-headers-3.19.0-22-generic package, but when I try in terminal, it says Package 'linux-headers-3.19.0-22-generic' has no installation candidate.

I ran sudo dpkg --audit, which gave the following:

I finally convinced my wife to put Ubuntu on her Macbook. Unfortunately, she strongly prefers the Mac approach to right clicking: Ctrl+Button1. I have the trackpad set up to do a two finger touch = right-click, but she isn't having it.

Can anyone please, please, PLEASE help me figure this out. I've seen this question posted before, with no answers.

I also saw the mouseemu approach mentioned here, but it doesn't seem to work.

I also thought about using the built in System Preferences>Keyboard>Shortcuts>Custom Shortcut, but it doesn't allow a "left click."

I also thought about using CCSM and xdotool, but couldn't figure out how to get two xdotool (xdotool xdotool key super+l; xdootool click 1)options to turn into one (xdotool click 3). (Note: I switched the Ctrl key and the super/mac command key to make it more mac-like, hence the super+l).

If you have a workable solution -- please respond. A Mac to Ubuntu conversion is at stake!

rEFInd is awesome to dual-boot Ubuntu (primary) and OSX (way secondary). But every now and then I screw something up, and I miss the Grub2 option of booting into "recovery mode" and then dropping into a root shell that has access to my Ubuntu system.

Is there any way to do something similar in rEFInd when using an iMac (I mention this because this seems to imply that shell doesn't play nice with Macs)? I tried calling the shell option on the showtools line of local.conf, but nothing shows up in rEFInd.

I also tried to use rEFInd'sInsert or F2 for more options option, but there was no shell option there either.

NOTE:
When using an Mac, to access rEFInd's Insert or F2 for more options, you need to press the fn key (which is where the Insert key is on a Windows keyboard) and the f2 key simultaneously. This brings up the boot options, which are set (on a Linux system) at /boot/refind_linux.conf.

On Ubuntu 15.10, using Unity or Ubuntu tweak, I can change my Theme and Icons. But for some Icon sets, the menu bar icons seem to be the same. For example, this is what the menu icons for "Breeze-dark" looks like:

And this is what the menu icons for "locolor" look like:

The other (non-menu bar) icons do change throughout the rest of the gui (see,e.g., the directory icons), but the menu icons are essentially identical.

I get the sense the "Breeze-dark" is falling back on a default icon set for the menu items, but I can't figure out where it is or, more importantly, how to change it.

At the end of the day, I'd like to keep the "Breeze-dark" icon set for the general os, but swap out the menu bar icons for something a bit more consistent, like these from the Faba icon set menu bar:

Or just generally mix and match.

I have an Asus laptop, and the keyboard backlight comes on full at startup. I formerly used the instructions here to issue a sudo command to turn it off. Basically, the steps were:

1. gksudo gedit /etc/rc.local
2. put echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/asus::kbd_backlight/brightness before exit 0
3. Save and sudo chmod +x /etc/rc.local

On upgrade to 15.04, this stopped working. And I can't seem to fix it. Any ideas???

As I was using my desktop running Ubuntu 14.10, out of the blue a Cairo-Dock indicator appeared asking if I wanted to use the newly installed "Google Wallet" application. Cairo-dock does this whenever a new application is installed or a new .desktop file is added to /usr/share/applications.

I was not in the process of installing software and no software updates had occurred today to my knowledge.

Upon searching my computer, I could not find "Google Wallet," except via the Cairo-Dock:

It is not in /usr/share/applications or /opt. It is not located by searching Nautilus.

Does anyone know what this is and how to get rid of it?

I would like to stream music from my Ubuntu 14.10 machine to Airplay speakers. I followed the instructions here. After doing so, I can see the Airplay speakers to which I'd like to connect in both System Settings>Sound and/or Pulseaudio Volume Control. I can even select them in those settings.

HOWEVER, when I select the Airplay speakers in either System Settings or Pulseaudio, two things happen:

1. The media player pauses. This happens in any media player: FireFox playing Pandora.com or Pithos or any other. Somehow, simply selecting the Airplay speaker pauses the player, and you cannot restart it. This happens every time the Airplay speakers are selected (note: I've tried this with numerous AirPlay speakers, so they are not the problem).
2. The volume for the regular speakers is set at 0. No idea why.

Most guides that I've read say that all you need to do is what is described in the link -- essentially install Pulseaudio Volume Control and Pulseaudio Preferences, then enable Airplay in the latter.

But it doesn't work for me. I've tried this on two different installs of 14.10, with the same fail. This guy seemed to have a similar problem, but no one responded to his post.

Please help me get this to work? It's killing me.

I am using Ubuntu 14.10 on an Asus laptop -- and I can't connect to my wireless router if I have it set to the 2.4GHz Wireless N mode. And, worse, it has a difficult time connecting to my router if it is set at Mixed NG. Oddly, using "sudo iwlist scan" it can see routers with N -- it just can't connect.

I have done a number of searches online for this problem, which seems common, but the solutions all seem to involve a different wireless card, an outdated version of Ubuntu, a different kernel, or has a conf file that doesn't exist on mine.

This is making it really hard to use Ubuntu -- as everytime I take my laptop somewhere that uses the N Wireless mode, I can't access the network. In addition, I can't access my Android's WiFi hotspot, because it is N. Hopefully, someone out there has an idea how to fix this!!!

One side note: Although I am using an external USB dongle, an Edimax, because the internal card was not receiving signals very strongly, this problem was the same with the built-in Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 card. Also, I made sure that my router is set to send 2.4 GHz wireless N, because the Edimax cannot access 5GHz.

I am on Ubuntu 14.04. I would like to connect to my Android phone using WebDav. I've done this from a Mac, from Windows, and from Kubuntu (using Dolphin -- this also works in Ubuntu using Dolphin) with no problem. But when I select "Connect to server" I get this dialog box:

Is there any way to get the old dialog back? I would like to follow the tutorial under davDrive here (www.upubuntu.com/2012/01/some-free-apps-for-managing-your.html) (as it is intuitive and how Kubuntu worked), but I can't do it with the current dialog.

Is there any way to directly connect to a WebDav client inside Nautilus by typing webdav://10.0.1.15:8888/ into the location bar (CTRL-L)? I get an error message every time: "Sorry, could not display all the contents of “10.0.1.15 (webdav)”: The specified location is not supported." This too works in Dolphin.

I installed Ubuntu, but when I boot I go straight to Grub rescue command prompt (GNU GRUB version 2.00-19ubuntu2.1). I can get a Grub boot interface by typing:

set root=(hd0,5) 
set prefix=(hd0,5)/boot/grub 
insmod normal 
normal

And I can then boot into either Windows 8 or Ubuntu. But I really don't want to type that every time I reboot.

For reference: I have a new 2013 Asus Q501L. It had Window 8.0 preinstalled. I shrunk the Windows partition, leaving the other Windows partitions alone, including sda1 and recovery. I installed Ubuntu on the space I created from the shrunken Windows partition.

I have tried the following to fix this:

1. Boot-recovery (both legacy mode and EFI mode as described here (That is, I get the WinEFI detected message in Boot Repair, but I've tried it both with and without activating the Windows efi inside Boot-Repair). Boot Repair says, when finished with non-efi approach: Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sda1/EFI/ubuntustudio/shimx64.efi file!. But in my BIOS, the only Ubuntu boot option is "ubuntu (PO: Toshiba MQ...75).

2. The instructions here for reassociating grub with the boot partition

UPDATE: I installed rEFInd. It worked, but only if I boot from the default/generic variants. I still can't boot from the specific Ubuntu versions that Ubuntu tries to use, as those go straight to the Grub command line.
