I'm on ubuntu 16.04 unity latest updates installed, I have one of the best Asus gaming laptops in the market, VLC is installed but I never use it.

For the last few months, I wasn't able to shut down my PC, every time I try to do so, the fans start spinning so fast and it hangs, so I just press the shut down button, that problem was only on shutdown, not restart I didn't even bother trying to solve the problem.

Today, while I was working, I noticed the fans doing the same thing that they normally do while shutting down. I ran top noticed 2 vlc instances being run under my username consuming like 122% cpu each, although again I don't use vlc, and I'm not using any program that relies on vlc.

I tried to sudo kill <pid> and sudo killall <pid> and sudo killall vlc but still they weren't killed, that never happened to me before. I killed them from Ubuntu resource monitor, they were killed and the shutdown problem was fixed, and everything went back to normal.

Did that happen to anybody before?

I am on Ubuntu 16.04, I cannot play, pause, go to the next or the previous song in spotify. There are many answers but most are complicated, is there a simple solution that doesn't require a command line?

I have a Logitech bluetooth keyboard.

My friend has Microsoft Wireless Desktop 850 with AES (PY9-00001) Ubuntu 18.04. The scrolling speed is too fast, but if he removes the USB dongle and plugs it in again, it fixes the problem.

He's on a dual booted PC, and every time he boots Windows then boots back into Ubuntu, the problem is back.

How can we fix it for good?

The problem only occurs after soft reboot only.

My friend used to use an HP wireless mouse with a wired keyboard and everything was fine. When he bought that Microsoft wireless mouse/keyboard combo, he started facing the problem listed above.

I have "test1.csv" and it contains

diff test2.csv test1.csv > result.csv

is different than

diff test1.csv test2.csv > result.csv

I don't know which is the correct order but I want something else, both of the commands above will output something like

I want to output only the difference, thus results.csv should look like this

I tried diff -q and diff -s but they didn't do the trick. Order doesn't matter, what matters is that I want to see only the difference, no > nor < nor blank space.

grep -FvF did the trick on smaller files not on big ones

first file contains more than 5 million lines, second file contains 1300.

so results.csv should result in ~4,998,700 lines

I also tried grep -F -x -v -f which didn't work.

I'm trying to run import.io on ubuntu 14.04 64 bit. It says

In synaptic they seem installed, which is confusing, unless I'm looking at different packages. So I wounder how to install them using apt-get?

I have 2 big csv files, file1.csv which looks like this

file2.csv which looks like this

These are just random numbers that I made up, basically the two numbers where identical, and sorted. I want to compare file1.csv and file2.csv and then copy the rows that are present in file1.csv but not in file2.csv to file3.csv. the delimiter is comma obviously

I tried

comm -2 -3 file.csv file2.csv > file3.csv

and I tried

diff -u file.csv file2.csv >> file3.csv

Both didn't work because file3 was bigger than file1 and file2. I tried different diff and comm commands, sometimes it's bigger than file2 and about the same size as file file1, I know that file3 has to be significantly less in size than file1 and file2. And of course I looked at file3, not the results I wanted

At this point, I know it could be done with diff or comm but I do not know the command to use.

I have an HP computer running 64-bit Ubuntu, so you could say Intel. I'm taking a assembly course at the university. The instructor wants us to use TASM.

While it may run on wine I'm not sure about it. TASM is no longer maintained.

I have never written any assembly programs, but I would like to know if there's a assembler that runs natively on Ubuntu 64-bit, is free, is maintained and as close as possible to the TASM syntax as possible so I can follow the instructor without having to much trouble.

I have found this question, however the answers given there don't say which one has the closest syntax to TASM, which is the main point of my question. I can find easily many assemblers with Google. I want to know which one has the closest syntax to TASM.

Dropbox won't start, it was working fine until last week, so I tried to see what happens if i started it from terminal

Starting Dropbox...Dropbox isn't running!
Done!

If I try to run it again, it says

dropbox start

I have a HP pavillion g6, running Xubuntu 14.04 64-bit. I have 3 USB ports. For some reason, 2 of them stopped working this morning.

I have xserver-xorg-input-all installed, followed the instructions here which didn't work. My laptop is updated and upgraded to the latest version. lsusb outputs

I want to find some patterns and save them in another log file file.log and remove them from the first file. Perl or grep ideally

• for instance, if x+1 = x2, in range of 3, remove the row and log its existence in another file and where it existed. So then 2,4,5,25,11 will be removed from file.csv and in file.log I would find something like row 7: 2,3,4,25,11 was removed from file.csv. I'm trying to find sequences

I have gnumeric and libreoffice calc. How to find duplicate rows? if I could use libreoffice, it's better, but anything is good for me.

I used to install scrapy before, never had issues, what's wrong?

Say there's a software that wasn't created for Ubuntu but someone creatred a PPA for it and I use that PPA.

Now the PPA owner, doesn't want to maintain the PPA anymore. Can I ask the owner to hand it over, so that I maintain the ppa? If so how? And what does maintaining the PPA require besides updating the code?

I'm using Xubuntu 14.04 64 bit. I know that question been asked a billion times, but all of them consist of editing following file:

/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

That file does not exist on my system. I tried com.xubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla but doesn't exist either, locate command doesn't find it.

I was looking at this question and I wondered if the following could be done from terminal. I did it in python, just want to see if it could be done from terminal, bash scripting or whatever.

Suppose I have a file that looks like so:

2,4,5,14,9
40,3,5,10,1

could it be sorted like so, by rows (lines)

2,4,5,9,14
1,3,5,10,40

or is it too complicated? I did it using python, I just want to know if it could be done so next time I might not use python. What I have done, is creating lists and sorting them.

I use shutter for screenshots, it has an option to upload to imgur as a guest, is it possible to upload to my account instead?

/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old and /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Note that I no longer have xorg.conf, because I followed the answers below, but even if I generate new file, It will be looking like the file above, I tried it.

I'm on Xubuntu 13.10 64 bit. I've recently had this issue. As a result the sliding bar that is used to control the volume is gone. I can live without it, I can control the volume from my keyboard but I'd like to know if I can install an alternative to the default sliding bar.
