I have two versions of the same PDF document. One has annotations that I did on it while reading it on my laptop, while the other has annotations that I did on a tablet. Now I want to merge these annotations into the same file.
I know that Adobe Acrobat allows me to do this (see for example this answer on Ask Different). Is there any software I can use in Ubuntu that will allow me to do this?
For what it is worth, I am using Xodo on the tablet.
I downloaded JabRef-3.2.jar. I can execute it from the command line:
java -jar JabRef-3.2.jar
which works fine. But I would like to have a Launcher in my start menu, if possible with an appropriate icon. How can I do this?

I usually leave long computations running in a terminal window, which may take from a couple of minutes, to hours, or days. It would be nice if I could be alerted somehow when a terminal finishes executing a command. This should only be necessary for terminals which are minimized.
Is there a way to set up something like this? Ideally, the terminal window could flash, or maybe a notification show up.
I just switched from Ubuntu to Xubuntu. I'm just trying to format a USB drive, but I don't find the Disks utility which I used on Ubuntu. Do I need to install something in Xubuntu in order to format my USB drive (what do you suggest?), or is there a tool that comes by default that I can use?

I know that Ctrl+R let's you search command history, but it's a little primitive. Is there a way to export all my command history (not just the current terminal session, but the full history) to a text file? I could then use a text editor to search it comfortably. I have a multi-page pdf file, and I want to rotate a specific page 90 degrees clockwise, to obtain a new pdf file which has the same pages as the original pdf, but with this specific page rotated. How can I do this?
System Load Indicator displays plots of CPU activity, memory use, hard drive i/o, etc. There's also a "Load" graph, but I don't know what it means. What exactly is this "Load"?
I have a long list of processes displayed in htop, but I am only interested in one of them. As old processes terminate and new processes are spawned, htop keeps updating the displayed list of processes, which means that the one process I am interested in keeps jumping up and down the list.
Is it possible to disable this behavior somehow?
That is, I would like to anchor the scroll to this particular process. How can I do this?

I have a text-file that is being continually written to by another program.
gedit can refresh the text file contents by going to File -> Revert, but this requires manual input. Is there a text-file viewer (doesn't have to be GUI, a terminal viewer works fine) that automatically updates the contents of the file without manual input?
I don't understand the bash command exec. I have seen it used inside scripts to redirect all output to a file (as seen in this). But I don't understand how it works or what it does in general. I have read the man pages but I don't understand them.
I have written a bash script that calls several other programs and executes a bunch of commands. I run this script from the terminal. Now I want to kill the script.
Pressing Ctrl + C sometimes doesn't cut it, I think because sometimes the script is executing another program, and for some reason the kill signal doesn't work.
However, if I close the terminal window, it kills the script.
Is there something I can do (a keyboard combination), that is analogous to closing the terminal window, without actually closing the terminal window (I don't want to lose command history, current directory, output history, etc.)?
When I try to set Google Chrome's proxy settings (on chrome://linux-proxy-config/), I get the following message:

I need to set proxy settings to use Chrome, but I don't want to be setting them in the command line every time I use Chrome. Is there a way to set these settings permanently?
Also, is there an option in Chrome so that it doesn't use proxy for specific domains (analogous to the No proxy for setting in Firefox)?
Sometimes I open a new window in a program (such as a new notebook in Mathematica), and the title bar of the window appears above the screen, so I cannot drag the window around.
What can I do when this happens? Is there a command I can use in the terminal to maximize the window, or to change its location?
In the release page of Ubuntu, I see that both the 14.04.1 and the 14.04 versions are offered for download. Do I need them both? That is, is 14.04 a prerequisite for installing 14.04.1? Or can I just download the last version ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso?
Suppose I have a script script.sh, which takes some time to execute. I execute it, ./script.sh. While it is running in a terminal window, I modify the file script.sh. Will this have any effect on the already running process?
After modifying it, I execute the modified file, so I have two running process now. Is this okay?
The title says it all. What command I need to run from a terminal to find my user ID (UID)?
Is there a keyboard key combination that I can use to pause a program running in the terminal? In case it matters, I don't intend to run anything else inside that terminal while the program is paused. I just want to pause the program execution, and resume it later. How can I do this?
