I am running 18.04 up to date, with hplip 3.17.10 installed. According to package search this is the standard one for this OS. However, I recently purchased a new HP multi-function printer. To operate the scanner, hp website says it requires hplip 3.20.5 or higher.
There is a version 3.21.06 listed in the package search for Ubuntu 21.10. Can that .deb be used successfully with 18.04? Or another solution that's not too in depth?
From time to time, the normal wireless connection icon changes to a question mark.
Ubuntu 18.04. Wireless adapter is TP-Link TL-WN881ND.
At such times, I haven't noticed and significant difference in connectivity.
I would like to understand the criteria that determines when this is displayed. No doubt there is some criteria that results in its display. And why it's there as there does not seem to be any functional impact the average user would notice.

As suggested in a comment, when the "?" appeared, I tried the command:

Over the last six months, linux-hwe-5.4-headers-5-4-0-xx haven't been deleted from usr-->src directory. Earlier from the current versions, v42 to v62 are still available.
Will there be any problem if I delete them manually? Ubuntu 18.04.
And, is there any explanation why this happened? System has been operating for over 18 months, but this started about 6 months ago.
When I look at files as listed in Nautilus (sort by name), if there are both English and non-ASCII (in my case Japanese) characters, some characters (kana) are mixed with the ASCII characters out of order. (Windows segregates them properly.)
I have checked many related questions here, and it seems like the sort order is hard-coded in Nautilus, and so can't be changed.
But my question here is not how to change it, but where the sort algorithm is actually defined, relating to non-ASCII characters. I'm using 18.04 if that matters. My locale is US-English.
Terminal ls command seems to give the same order, so this may be a system setting rather than specific to Nautilus, but again I don't know where to look for it.
This desktop amd64 running 18.04 has been running fine for about 5 months. A few days ago, a strange problem started.
On shutdown, Ubuntu shutdown appears to be normal, then the video is cut. However, system power remains on until I do a hardware reset or by the power switch.
On a USB drive, if I move files to trash, the trash icon changes from empty to full, as it should.
However, if I then remove the USB drive (without emptying the trash), the trash icon still shows trash in it. The only way I could get the icon back to empty is to reconnect the drive and then empty the trash.
Normally this is OK but on one case the USB drive with trash files was formatted, so now there is nothing left to empty. The trash icon still is full one, even though Trash folder is empty.
What I see:
Is this icon display related to removable drives normal? It seems counter-intuitive.
And now, how to remove the yellow bar/empty button, or where is it controlled?
I'm trying to determine if I have sufficient drive storage resources for Windows 7 to run in Virtualbox. I am running Ubuntu 18.04 in a 50GB ext4 partition on a 1GB Hard drive (Partition 5 below).
Partition 1 is ntfs from ex-Windows 7. Since it is 75% full of needed data, resizing that partition is not possible.
There is also a 50GB Extended Partition. AFAIK it is unused.
The Ubuntu partition (Partition 5) has about 25GB free space. Is this enough disk space? And if not, is it possible for the virtual Windows 7 to run in another partition, or in part of another partition?
As a strictly side question, Ubuntu software has Virtualbox version 5.2.34, while the Virtualbox website has version 6.1.6. Which one would be safest/necessary for my purpose, and not having used this application before?
I have a Japanese 108-key keyboard that I have been using for a long time on en-US Windows 7. It works correctly including keys that switch alpha/hiragana/katakana etc.
Recently I installed Ubuntu 18.04 as dual-boot on the same desktop and keyboard.
Japanese has been added in Language Support.
In Settings → Regions & Language → Input Sources, I added Japanese, and “Japanese” for the keyboard type (there is no 106/109 keyboard layout).
It seems to recognize this keyboard since it correctly matches some special character positions that are different from an en-US keyboard.
But keys for switching half-width/full width, hiragana/katakana etc. do nothing.
I checked some related questions but it seems to be an unanswered topic. Surely Ubuntu is used in Japan so I expect there is some solution or workaround.
I would like to learn the setup if anyone is successfully using such a keyboard. AFAIK, IME should be a separate matter. I have ibus and fcitx installed but maybe that’s a next step.
I use Subtitle Edit 3.5.9 on Windows all the time, but would like to get it running on Ubuntu too. (Maybe as preparation for Windows 7 EOL).

I have never used mono before and am not a so experienced Linux user.
There are mono packages in Ubuntu Package Search but I have no idea about the best way to install or what is needed.
The referenced page Subtitle Edit For Ubuntu - Troubleshoting, Tips And Tricks is dated and not conclusive as far as I can tell.
So I would like to find out if there is a confirmed process to run this software, or any advice to try to get there.

I also tried the appImage file for Linux here - Download Avidemux latest release, but it would not execute at all. (I did set the file properties to "executable".)

As far as I have read, including USN-3516-1: Firefox vulnerabilities, only FF57 (in 57.0.4) is being updated due to these issues.
As some people are using FF52esr (currently 52.5.3), is there any downside or different plan for these users? I haven't seen any updates for these issues.
Currently I am running FF56 on Ubuntu 16.04. Despite the cool new stuff in FF57, I can't update because some extensions I regularly use won't be compatible, and there are no similar compatible extensions available.
But I do want to keep up on security updates. I hate to go back to FF52, but the only option I can see is to downgrade FF56 to FF52esr. The file available from Mozilla for 32-bit en-US is "firefox-52.5.0esr.tar.bz2".
I realize there are other questions that deal with handling installations using this kind of archive, however I was hoping someone could write a procedure for this specific situation, as it may be commonly needed for those wishing to retain FF57 incompatible extensions.
I have an existing system with Windows 7 64 bit installed on one HDD. System is BIOS ROM. There is a second HDD, no OS just files. Both are formatted with Windows partitions.
I want to add Ubuntu 16.04 to make a dual-boot system. I don't want to change the existing Windows installation.
Using the installer on the Live CD, after adjusting the partitions on the second HDD, can I install Ubuntu on the second HDD?
Will this keep the existing Win7 installation unchanged?
As for selecting which OS to boot, which HDD will the MBR be on? And will it still operate correctly to select which OS on startup?
Or would it be better to select the OS by setting the HDD boot order in ROM?
Any other considerations or flaws with this plan? And part that couldn't be done using the Live CD installer?
