Recently, on my Ubuntu 18.04 I have noticed that at least on gnome-calculator and chromium browser the fonts are displayed as squares. I have followed instructions here and here, the calculator is fixed, but the problem on chromium still exists when I open a dialog to search for a file.

Not sure if this happens on other applications as well, I haven't checked all my apps, but File managers nemo and nautilus are working fine.

Also, before few months ago, I have included some windows fonts for my libre office shown here. I used the copy (cp) method, not the link (ln -s). But, was working fine until yesterday. Haven't done any major change or update, at least on my Linux partition (dual boot). But, I don't think that this has anything to do with that.

Any idea how can I fix this issue?

I have modified fstab to auto-mount my secondary hard drive to a custom location and assign owner and group on Ubuntu 18.04. I am facing some issues and I know that probably the problem is on mount parameters, but I am not sure how exactly. The issues are:

1 - I can't change permissions on files:

2 - I can't attach files that are located in this drive to e-mails via any browser:

Also, I am using nemo as file manager. As for the second issue, I am not sure if the issue is on nemo or on mount parameters as well. To install nemo I used the commands below:

I recently installed Ubuntu 18.04 into my laptop along with windows 10. Unfortunately, my external monitor which is connected into HDMI-1 is not working on Ubuntu (Not detected). I tried almost everything here and here. It is connected with HDMI-to-VGA_Adapter. My graphics card is GeForce GTX 1650 and I tried to download this drivers from NVidia. Also, as you can see in the picture, on screen display settings it's not even show the screen layout.

On Ubuntu 14.04 (my old laptop) I had solved similar problem in the past by using something like:

But, this didn't work either. Any ideas ?

UPDATE: I had run X -configure (only main screen was working) as mention here and afterwords I had run nvidia-xconfig (Only HDMI works). Somehow, it seems that nvidia took the most recent created file xorg.conf.new and made it's own xorg.conf from it. Still, if I unplug HDMI everything is blank. AT least now I can see one screen layout(HDMI) and contents on nvidia x server settings application window (it was blank before)

I want to manipulate logs. So far, for me the best way to clear system logs is:

truncate -s 0 /var/log/*log

I'm searching for the best ways to:

1 - Do the above periodically. I have already try logrotate, but i couldn't set it up to make excactly what i want, meaning keep only the original log file and truncate it periodically without deleting it.

According to northern-bradley answer here the solution seems to be in using lastaction/endscript option into logrotate config file. So, it works perfectly by using this settings:

/var/log/*log{
       rotate 0
       size 0 
       hourly
       nocreate
       maxage 0
       missingok
       nocompress
       ifempty
       copytruncate
       lastaction
             rm -rf /var/log/*log.1
       endscript
}

The copytruncate option copy the logs into new log files ignoring rotate 0 and nocreate, then truncates the original logs. After all log files have been rotated, rm into lastaction/endscript section deletes all new log files created by copytruncate. At the end we have only the original files cleared.

2 - Clear last 'n' entries

3 - Block/Unblock new entries, something like freeze/unfreeze. For this i am thinking to use ln -s /dev/null /var/log/*log, but i don't know if i can restore this easly without needing any script. Or maybe a backup/restore state technick could help.

Is there any other way that could help me to do all the above (2 and 3)?
