It happens pretty often to me when I am compiling software in the background and suddenly everything starts to slow down and eventually freeze up [if I do nothing], as I have run out of both RAM and swap space.

This question assumes that I have enough time and resources to open up Gnome Terminal, search through my history, and execute one sudo command.

What command can save me from having to do a hard reboot, or any reboot at all?

realpath and readlink return absolute paths:

Needless to say, vim $bacon will not work as expected.

What can I do to sanitize that absolute path so it will work with other commands?

Pretty self explanatory.

The first argument should be:

• Checked if the file exists
• Echo that file's absolute path

For example:

/home/akiva/myfile.txt

I'm not looking for a keyboard shortcut, rather I want a commands for:

• New window
• New Tab
• Close Current tab or window
• Maximise Shell Window
• Minimise Shell Window
• Move Shell to a different work-space
• Switch Tab

And basically anything like this. Remember; I do not want shortcuts, but rather actual commands. The reason for this is so I can utilize alias functionality.

It gets so horrible that I can not even switch to TTY1 to force a reboot. I have to hard reset, and I lose work.

Ideally, I would like to be able to use the chrome browser on Ubuntu without having to keep reminding myself to close tabs.

Are there any extensions for Chrome, or tools for Ubuntu that can help prevent me going past the point where Ubuntu eats up all the RAM and becomes incapacitated?

I know you can run unity8 on your desktop, which will pop up a qml phone shell, but can you run it as your desktop? If so how do you achieve this, are there things not yet working on it?

My confusion here is whether unity8 has a desktop mode/tablet mode/tv mode along side the phone mode, or are these slated for a future release.
