On Ubuntu 24.04, I cannot locate anymore the Additional printers settings button, that used to be at the bottom of the Settings -> Printer menu... did it disappear, or was put somewhere else? I could not find any documentation on that..

I am trying to use the time-tracking software hamster, which I installed from the snap: hamster-snap.
Now when I try to launch it, I see nothing happen... could be a bug, or me just not understanding how to launch/use it? I don't see any icon in the notification bar for example?

When connecting an external monitor to a laptop running Ubuntu 20.04, the "displayed screen" extends beyond the physical screen, implying that the top right of the display (containing the ubuntu menu/power-off) is not visible.
It looks like Ubuntu believes the monitor is bigger than it is? The highest resolution is offered with ratio 16:10, so could it be that my monitor is actually not 16:10? If I go for other lower resolution with different ratios, I can see the full "displayed workspace", yet those ratios are really bad and leave 30% of the screen space unused.
The available resolutions, shown by 'xrandr', together with their ratio, are: 1680/1050 = 1.6, 1280/1024 = 1.25, 1280/960 = 1.33, 1152/864 = 1.33,
1024/768 = 1.33, 832/624 = 1.33, 800/600 = 1.33, 640/480 = 1.33,
720/400 = 1.8
What should I do?

I am trying to use grub-reboot to boot just once to Windows (following this post).
Strangely enough, using the auto-completion from grub-reboot (or awk -F\' '/menuentry / {print $2}' /boot/grub/grub.cfg from this post,) I only see Ubuntu entries, or the last one UEFI Firmware Settings. Am I not supposed to see the Windows entry listed? How would I then boot to Windows at next restart?

UEFI Firmware Settings
How can I have grub start by default on an external monitor? My problem is that my laptop screen is broken/unresponsive, and I cannot see grub, as the external monitor is started only once grub has selected Ubuntu! I can hear the grub beep, count the 5 seconds timeout, but I never am able to access the grub menu?
Unfortunately, the method in this this post changing defaults in /etc/default/grub does not seem to work:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=LVDS-1:d"
and I replaced LVDS-1:d with DP-1-2-2, from:
$ xrandr -q
eDP-1-1 connected
DP-1-2 disconnected
DP-1-2-2 connected
DP-1-2-3 connected primary
But this does not work, I don't see grub, and the monitor only starts once Ubuntu has been selected. I can think of 3 explanations:

The size of the folders on the desktop and the upper (gnome?) bar both suddenly changed yesterday.
As you can see in the picture, the text Tweaks (on the top bar) and example (on the desktop) are smaller than the font in the file navigator.
I checked this post (How do I change fonts and adjust their size?) but curiously, the values seem unchanged and are still at their default values. (See pic)
Which is the relevant parameter for the upper menu and desktop icon font size?

I want to take a screenshot of only active screen, or ideally only the active window. I am happy to use a specific combination of keys to do it, although ideal would be to set this as default.
According to the documentation, it is possible to do this using Alt+Print Screen. This does not seem to work with Ubuntu 20.04: I get a shot of my two screens. Is there something wrong on my side, or is the documentation not updated?
Second, I tried to set this by default in dconf: org/gnome/gnome-screenshot. I see there is a take-window-shot option, but it seems deprecated? Why would they deprecate that? Is there no other option? Or should I look for an alternative screenshot utility?

I have a problem with nautilus on Ubuntu 20.04 handling files of unknown type on sftp folders.
For local folders, if Nautilus does not know which application to use, it will complain about the file is of unknown type, and then open a dialog box to associate that file to an application, and will remember this choice permanently for further uses.
However, if I am doing the same by on a sftp folder instead of local one, the same file extension:
Is there anything I can do to solve this problem? Where are in general the file format -> application stored? Why do those not work on sftp?

I am trying to disable the screensaver in Ubuntu 18.04, that is I don't want ever the screen to "go black" after some time. This is different from disabling auto-lock etc. I guess I am confused between related concepts such as idle, suspending and auto-lock.
I saw various parameters online, and set them all to the values that should disable any screensaver, lock screen, idle etc... but I am still getting a black screen after some time.
Which further parameter should I adjust? I have so far:
$gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen 'true'
$gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver lock-enabled false
$gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver idle-activation-enabled false

I installed recently 19.10, and after three weeks, got a problem with the 'Show Applications' icon on the bottom left: if I click on it, it won't show any of the applications, and almost freezes (see pic below). I particular, I won't be able to do any of:
Only solution is to reboot. The problem appears every time I click on the icon of 'Show Applications'.
Any idea what I can do to troubleshoot? Is it stuck searching for programs? What's the name of that Show Applications if I search with top? Is it a part of Nautilus, GNOME etc.?
I would like to add a bookmark in nautilus to a sftp server whose ip address changes over time.
I am connecting through sftp to a (google cloud instance) server, inserting in the file explorer the address:
sftp://[email protected]/home/
where xx.xxx.xx.xx is an IP address. I would like to add this as a bookmark in Nautilus, which I can easily do with ctrl +d. However, the ip address keeps changing from day to day. I can retrieve the IP address with a command like:
gcloud compute instances describe instancename --format="get(networkInterfaces[0].accessConfigs[0].natIP)"
Is there any way I can have a dynamic Nautilus bookmark, that would use the command above to create the correct address? Or can I run a command myself to update a static nautilus bookmark?

I have two disks on my computer, with:
sda: backup disk (has 12.04)sdb: disk for system (has now 18.04) Making a fresh install, I want to use the option erase disk and install Ubuntu (so that I can use encryption, otherwise I would just use option something else), on sdb, not sda. The installer correctly recognized there are two systems, but says: will delete all ... in all operating systems
How can I make sure it installs on sdb? Or will it really erase both disks?

I just installed Ubuntu 18.04 on a new disk, and trying from 18.04 to access my old Ubuntu files, on the older disk.
Going into /media/new_user/old_disk/old_user, there is a README file that says: THIS DIRECTORY HAS BEEN UNMOUNTED TO PROTECT YOUR DATA. And then says: From the command line, run: ecryptfs-mount-private.
Trying:
$ sudo ecryptfs-recover-private
does not do much (basically a few files it can't access, and nothing happens). Reading this old post (linking to this blog), I do instead:
cd /media/new_user/old_disk/.ecryptfs/old_user
sudo ecryptfs-recover-private .Private/
Which gives:

I believe the issue does not come from wrong passphrase: I think I got the right one indeed, entering an obviously wrung one give another error message, Error: Unwrapping passphrase and inserting into the user session keyring failed [-5].
I should mention that both my old home and new home have the same user name... Could that be something that creates the problem? Where should actually ecryptfs-recover-private mount the old disk/system?
I am trying to install python package rpy2 with pip install on Ubuntu 16.04:
pip install rpy2==2.2.7
but get error message (see full output below):

The same thing happens with other packages, like pip install unroll, or using pip2. I thought this post was the same issue, but there it gets resolved by using sudo.
I tried solutions in this post, like: pip install --upgrade setuptools, (sudo) easy_install -U setuptools, or sudo apt-get install python-setuptools, but to no avail.
Someone suggested I might have a weird python/pip installation, here are a few infos:

I am trying to find the mime-type of a file. I used either 'file --mime-type' or 'xdg-mime', but get different answers? I am not sure to understand?

Why do I have different answers? Which one should I rely on?

I am using meld to visualise a diff between two files. meld shows the diff output in... something like Japanese or Chinese?
Any idea what could happen? A locale issue? What is strange is that when using diff or colordiff in terminal, they work perfectly!

I tried to create a bootable Ubuntu iso disk on a partition (sdc-2) of a usb stick, which had originally three partitions (sdc-1/2/3, of type ext3/fat32/ntfs). Following this thread, I ran:
sudo umount /dev/sdc2
sudo dd if=input.iso of=/dev/sdc
Now, I am not able to access the 3 partitions anymore. So first question, did I make a mistake? My feeling is that I should have used of=/dev/sdc2 instead, right?
Second question, how do I fix the problems:
The partitions are not shown. Running testdisk, I see one "iso" partition, but then, the "quick search" option shows the three underlying partition. How can I get the three partitions system back?
Previous partition sdc1 seems damaged. Testdisk detects it, but cannot list files. Did the dd operation irremediably damage it? Any change I could recover without using tools like photorecovery?

I am using freemind 0.9 on Ubuntu 12.04, and trying to install a plugin written with "groovy", from http://blog.icare3d.org/2011/02/writing-phd-thesis-using-freemind-and.html
I installed freemind, freemind-plugins-script, put manually (and edited) the grrovy srcipt, edited plugins/ScriptingEngine.xml as described in the link. The plugin is recognised as I can access through the menu, but clicking on it has no effect.

My understanding is that I am missing a java component? Is this correct? Or is it that that component is not updated (I note I have grrovy 1.9 while 2.3 seems there)?
If so, how can I locate it? I saw some libasm-java libraries, installed a bunch of them (libasm-dev, libasm-java, libasm1, libasm2-java, libasm2-java, libasm3-java) but still the same error. Interestingly, I note that objectweb/asm/Opcode is mentioned in libasm2-java-doc but not in libasm2-java
Or maybe the library is correctly installed, but it is the plugin/freemind that does not locate it correctly?
