I'm looking for a sowftware where I can speak to the microphone and get the recorgnized text and also a suggested translation in a different format.

The objective is to help people have written online conversations in languages that are not their own.

I saw many speech-to-text projects and also translating apps, but none that seems to combine them for this particular purpose.

The ideal thing would be something like google translate, but instead (or in addition to) writing the text I could just speak to the microphone (or perhaps a different app to do that)

I found out that I was missing the mic icon in Google translate, I switched to google chrome and it worked.

I have a dell xps which has no scroll-lock key.

Nevertheless, when I open libreoffice-calc the scrolllock mode is enabled and I can't disable it, which renders calc completely useless.

Is there some way to disable it or to emulate pressing the scroll-lock key?

I installed ubuntu, using english as a language.

Then I added spanish, meant to be used by another user.

Now whenever I do something in apt the messages are in spanish

I also tried running

in which I chose en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8 and es_AR.UTF-8 UTF-8 (I don't want to mess the configuration of the spanish speaking user)

As default language for the entire system I choose: en_US.UTF-8 Also tried with:

Lately there are some applications that have the option of hiding the menu and making it visible againg pressing alt, like sublime text, visual studio code, firefox, etc

Is there some plugin to make this behavior available for every app in kubuntu? It would be pretty useful ...

And for gnome? It would also be useful for those app that still haven't integrated the menu in the title bar...

In gnome I can create a shortcut to an application by placing the .dektop file in the ~/.local/share/applications/, like this

I've just installed Kubuntu 18.04 and when I press Ctrl-Shift-) in konsole, the screen is split in two, but they are the same terminal: what I type in one of them gets typed in the other.

I don't want two views of the same terminal, I want to open a different terminal, just like what you do with terminator.

I got pretty used to Win+1, Win+2, etc shortcut keys from Unity and I'd like to know if there's some way to emulate this in KDE Plasma.

Right now I'm using KDE Plasma 5.13.5, running on Kubuntu 18.10.

I'd like every window in gnome shell to open in the state and position used when I closed them, or at least, if that's not possible, to let me configure how they should open.

I noticed that some applications (atom editor, files, for example) seem to remember the window size but not it's position, and others seems to open always in the same way (terminator).

For example, every time I open terminator I tile it to the left, I'd like some way to configure it so that it should always open like that.

BTW, I'm using Ubuntu Bionic Beaver development branch

In previous versions of Ubuntu I could create custom keyboard shortcut to run terminal commands, with something like gksudo reboot for example, and then assign that to something like win+r.

I can't find that option in Ubuntu 17.10 or Ubuntu 18.04 daily build.

Am I missing something?

I searched online for a while and all I could find is this thread on the Linux Mint forums

Anybody had luck using this printer on Linux? Or should I go for a similar model with better Linux support?

I'm thinking about buying this Meizu MX4 that comes with Android.

I was wondering if it would be possible to install Ubuntu Touch on it and keep receiving OTA updates. Being able to dual-boot it with android/ubuntu would also be nice.

Elementary freya is suppossed to be based on Ubuntu 14.04, and I tried with Ubuntu 14.04.02, 14.10 and also a 15.04 beta but the wireless network just won't show up.

I've just installed trusty with unity.
I press the win key for a while, but the shortcuts cheatsheet won't show up.
I tried with compiz-settings-manager and with ubuntu-tweaks with no luck at all.

Is there some way to see them? Whay has it changed the way it behaved?

I had nautilus-compare (and other nautilus-actions-extra packages) perfectly working with Ubuntu 12.04

I've just did a fresh install of Ubuntu raring ringtail, and then I ran

sudo apt-get install meld nautilus-compare
nautilus -q

but the extra context menu(s) doesn't show up

Has anybody else had this trouble? In that case where should I file this bug?

So much has been written that I'm kind of confused, but if I'm not mistaken Canonical is building the next generation of Unity for mobile devices with Qt, and in the near future the desktop will also be migrated to qt.

I just wanted to know the technical and/or political reasons driving this decision, and what consequences could it mean for the currently existing Ubuntu desktop applications.

I configured the ring switcher with the CCSM.

I press Super + Tab and I start to cycle between all windows, but when I release the keys on the desired one, I have to either click on it or press enter.

How can I make it automatically select the window when I release the key?

It was working, but suddenly it stopped doing it.

I have the same trouble with Shift-Switcher compiz plugin.

I'm playing with ubuntu 12.04, precise pangolin, and there's an issue I can't see how to solve.

If I have three instances of, let's say, Firefox, in the switcher appears a single Firefox icon, I have to wait something like a second for it to open so that I can finally choose the one I'm looking for

I tried with compiz-settings and the unity plugin but couldn't find an option to ungroup Windows.
