Today i encountered a problem with my ubuntu 18.10 machine that has proved difficult, at least for me, to tackle so i am asking for help.

Today in the morning i used my pc just fine, but when i came back from work it refused to open and it freezes to some point while booting.

Unfortunately i can only provide an image of the freeze as follows:

Now, i searched for the last message on the internet but i could only find inquiries about how to cancel the disk checks.

In my case of course that, is not an option since the pc is frozen at this state. I let it run for an hour in hope that it actually was disk checking, but to no avail.

Now, on the same PC i have a second installation of Ubuntu 18.04 which works fine, (plus a windows 10 installation that also works fine), and it is the installation from which i am asking the question.

From my 18.04 system i checked all the disks and they are ok and my whole system is working fine with 18.04

After a few resets it finally booted and the 18.10 system worked fine, until of course i shut it down and when i tried to boot it up it freezes in almost the same point, as you can see in the second picture.

If i select my Ubuntu 18.04 installation in grub it always starts ok and, keep in mind that both ubuntu systems use the same disks, mounted at the same points.

My PC is a AMD A8 - NVidia GT740 - 16GB RAM - 8 HDDs

I really do not think it is a hardware problem since the system is running fine with 18.04, but the boot freezes completely.

Can anyone think of anything on that ?

P.S. The red vertical line in the pictures is a monitor defect not a vga one.

After some reading i disabled all disk checking on boot, but the problem persists although now it does not show the message about the fsck.

Now it freezes on the message about starting the GNOME Display Manager.

What is weird is that many times it boots normally while some other times it does not.

I have a new fresh installation of Ubuntu 18.04.

After a couple of days i noticed that whenever i try to copy or cut anything, it could be a single file or many files, as soon as i press ctrl-C there is a lag of about 2-3 seconds before i can do anything with nautilus.

During the lag, all other windows/programs function normally but nautilus is completely frozen.

After the lag nautilus works again normally and the action is carried out normally.

UPDATE: The last few days that i am monitoring this behavior, i noticed that after some system updates, the behavior is a little different.

When my PC is booted there is no lag at all, and it starts happening after some time which i am not able to specify. And it is corrected with a reboot.

In Ubuntu 16.04 I could compress a file or folder by right clicking on it and the File Roller/Archive Manager window would pop up allowing me to set a password or split the archive into volumes.

In Ubuntu 18.04 this functionality is gone and is substituted by a Nautilus window not giving you any options other than the name or the archive type.

How can I reinstate file roller/ archive manager to work with Nautilus, in Ubuntu 18.04?

It is the same problem as How to make nautilus use file-roller in 17.10 like in 17.04? but the difference is that the package nautilus-actions is not available in Ubuntu 18.04, so I cannot proceed with the answer to that question.

I am a user of Ubuntu 12.04 x64 almost since its release and i can say that i am very satisfied with it.

But recently i ran into two problems both concerning Firefox which is my main browser.

When Firefox was updated to version 44 i had serious problems with videos and Firefox crashed every time a video was present in the page i visited.

This problem is also mentioned here. I followed the instructions and the problem was fixed until the next update of Firefox where the problem returned. I have also seen this thread and i even found this in Mozilla and submitted my feedback, but unfortunately i had no success in finding a solution.

Of course there are no such problems in the corresponding version in windows which i use for work.

My solution was to use FF43 or, since i plan on upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04 when it is released, i used an extra disk and installed ubuntu 15.10 just to see if i still had such a problem.

The result was that in Ubuntu 15.10 FF was working ok until version 45 in which videos are OK but one of my main add-ons, (x-notifier) stopped working properly to the point that it is unusable. Again the only viable solution for me is to use FF44.

Again, no such problems in the windows versions of FF and my FF profile is always the same.

Now, i am aware that i maybe mixing two separate problems in one post and i apologize if it is so. But as an end user i find it hard to not combine these two, because to me it seems as there is a pattern involving FF and Ubuntu.

As i am planning to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 anyway, it is not a big problem for me to wait for a couple of months and in the meantime use FF44 or FF43.

But i am afraid that there will be something wrong with FF and Ubuntu 16.04 also !

If someone is aware of anything that might help it will be great.

I know that many have asked that question before, but I have seen no one ask it for Ubuntu 14.04.

I have a test installation of Ubuntu 14.04 with GNOME 3.10 and I have also installed the Flashback sessions.

What I get is this:

Using either Unity or the Flashback Sessions, (Compiz and Metacity), I can change the change-layout combination to Alt+Shift and it works.

Just a note here using Unity:

If I go to: System Settings-->Keyboard-->Shortcuts-->Typing-->Switch to next source, I can set it to Super+Space but NOT to Alt+Shift.

If I go to: System Settings-->Keyboard-->Text Entry, I can set it to Alt+Shift L.

Now the first time I logged in to the GNOME Shell, the combination worked, but after a while it stopped.

I tried every setting available through the GUIs but none of them worked properly.

Right now I am in a state where the combination works everywhere but the GNOME-Shell.

If, working with GNOME-Shell, I go to: System Settings-->Keyboard-->Shortcuts-->Typing-->Switch to next source, I can set it to Super+Space but NOT to Alt+Shift. Also even if I set to Super+Space it does not work.

If, working with GNOME-Shell, I go to: System Settings-->Keyboard-->Layout Settings, everything is disabled so I have to go to -->Shortcut Settings where I can set it to Super+Space but NOT to Alt+Shift. Also even if I set to Super+Space it does not work. (it is actually the same with the above)

I have also tried to change it through GNOME-Tweak Tool but what it does it is that it actually changes the "Modifiers-only Switch to next Source" found in the above mentioned Keyboard settings, but it still does not do the trick.

In the GNOME-Shell the combination works only to change the layout from EN to GR. In order to change from GR to EN I have to use the mouse and go through the indicator on the top bar. Which by the way does not follow the current layout anyway.

Having faced this problem in Ubuntu 13.10 with GNOME I hoped that it would be fixed in 14.04.

Is there something that I am missing?

My OS Setup is Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit, and GNOME 3.10.4. (Although strangely, when I go to the details on the System Settings it shows that I am using Ubuntu 13.10)

I have set up the system but made no modifications to it whatsoever through command line. I have only used GUI menus, and the only modifications I tried where the ones described above, regarding the change-layout key combination.
