I have tried pactl list short sink, but I get
Connection failure: Connection refused
pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused
which leads me to believe that ubuntu is using a different audio management technology now. Is this correct? What is the proper way to set the default speaker in focal?
SSH seems to work fine, but running sudo systemctl restart ssh gives the error Failed to restart ssh.service: Unit ssh.service not found. (and the same for sshd)
Did they rename it or something?
I've tried xset led 3, xset led off, xbacklight -set 00,
sudo find /sys/devices/platform/ -name leds returns nothing, so I couldn't try that.
sudo find /sys/devices -name leds returns /sys/devices/pci0000\:00/0000\:00\:1c.5/0000\:3f\:00.0/leds, but sudo echo '0' > /sys/devices/pci0000\:00/0000\:00\:1c.5/0000\:3f\:00.0/leds/phy0-led/brightness returns permission denied (yes, even with sudo).

So, I pretty much just copied and pasted a bunch of solutions from stack overflow, and so far nothing has worked, although, this, I believe should be a very simple thing to do.
I'm on a Lenovo Yoga 720, running ubuntu 18.10.
I cannot install ubuntu, and there is no way for me to submit a bug report, because I don't have ubuntu, because I can't install ubuntu.
I've followed all the instructions several times, and it just doesn't work on my system.
I know people are going to tell me to try a bunch of different stuff, but it just doesn't work. I've tried everything.
There is something wrong with ubuntu.
It does the same thing with Mint.
I guess there's not real way for me to report it though, so I don't know what to do.
It's weird though, because it works on a partition.
However, when I try to install it (I create a bootable USB drive (Yes, I've tried unebootin, I've tried dd, turning it into an img and leaving it as an ISO)), I can boot, it gives me the option to try or install ubuntu. I click install, and it says it cannot find a medium containing a live file system, whatever that means.
I'm using a Mid 2010 MacBook with an i5 Processor and an after market crucial 250 GB solid state drive.
Also, wanted to point out I've tried all this stuff in every usb slot.
My apple bluetooth aluminum keyboard and mouse keep popping up and then going away. They don't even have time to connect. I'm just wondering why that is.
I get the error noted above when I try to install ubuntu on my mac. I follow the instructions:

to create a usb stick with the dmg on the drive. I restart my computer and hold option, click on the efi, and it boots from the usb drive.
I click install ubuntu, and I get the purple loading screen with ubuntu written on it, and then all the sudden I get that error, from BusyBox, and it gives me some basic commands.
Are you able to install ubuntu on a mac? I mean, I followed all the instructions, but it doesn't work, and I don't know what else I could do. I tried redownloading it and following all the instructions again.
Maybe it just doesn't workon my architecture? I have a Mid 2010 Macbook with an i5 processor.

EDIT: Ok, if I install 12.04, and that works, can I just upgrade to the new version of Ubuntu? EDIT2: No, for some reason the old version of ubuntu doesn't even show up when I try to boot it.
I have been trying to switch the Ctrl and CMD key on my MacBook for a while, but nothing seems to work.
A lot of the answers say to go to System Settings > Keyboard Layout and change it there, but I have a brand new installation of Ubuntu, and it does not have that feature.
I've also tried adjusting the xmodmap, which works for the current session, but when I reboot, the settings aren't saved.
To try to save it, I have added the command xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap to my Startup Applications, but that didn't work. I have also tried adding the command to the file /etc/profile.d/myfile.sh (I also altered the permissions). I have tried the file ~/.xinitrc file and many other ways, but nothing seems to work.
However, when I go to my shell and type in xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap, it works. So, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here.
Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Ok, so I've been messing around with my linux installation, and I've really kind of messed up.
I changed the ~/.gnomerc to open an application, but there was a problem: after it opened that application, it didn't do anything else. The rest of the screen was black, until I closed the appication. Then it just ran normally.
"Ok," I figured, "I've seen scripts have 'exit 0' after they were done executing, so maybe I need to add that."
Well, as you can imagine, I still have the same behaviour with the application, but now, when I close the application, it logs me out of my computer. So I can no longer edit the ~/.gnomerc file to fix it.
My solution so far is to somehow log into the root user bash in order to edit the file. Is there some way to do that? Can I log into my other account via terminal in order to edit that file? Can I somehow run the computer in "Safe Mode" or something and edit the file?
