Since upgrading to 21.10, I've had the following issue. When the screen locks due to being idle, when I unlock I get a black launcher (See screenshot). Furthermore, opening Activities gives me a black screen with no icons, and I have to log out and back in again to get everything back to normal.
Any idea how to troubleshoot this?
After upgrading to 21.10, I find that when I unlock the screen after it has been dormant for a while, the dash is black. The only way I've found to get it back is to log out and back in again.
I didn't have this issue in 21.04, so how do I go about troubleshooting it?
My system hung while upgrading from 20.10 to 21.04 and wouldn't reboot. I rescued it by dropping to the command line and running sudo dpkg --configure -a, and after that everything seemed fine.
Now, when I boot up I get following:

REISUB makes it restart properly, but how do I get it to boot in the first place? Running sudo canonical-livepatch refresh doesn't work as 21.04 doesn't support Livepatch anyway.
I share three or four folders over my network, but since upgrading to 20.04, I am unable to create new ones. When I try, I get the error message

Existing shares continue to be accessible.
I tried the fix given here but the line in question is already in my /etc/samba/smb.conf file.

Fresh install of 18.04 on an Intel NUC. Worked at first but now when I get to the login screen, it takes about a minute before my keyboard and mouse respond. My password is not accepted on the first attempt but on the second it is. On finally being allowed to log in, I am presented with a purple screen with no desktop.
Edit: I managed to get back in via a hard reboot but that's not an ideal solution.
Edit 2: Complete shutdown followed by disconnecting from the mains allows me to start up normally next time. Reboot or REISUB leads to issues described above.
I have a stack of family photos on my Ubuntu 17.10 PC which my wife would like to be able to access from her windows 10 laptop.
The usual methods worked fine with Windows 7; in fact, I have a Windows 7 laptop that sees the folder fine. However, the Ubuntu PC does not show in the list of network places on the Windows 10 machine.
I found a solution here but either I'm typing in the IP address wrongly or it just isn't working. How do I get the right IP addresses for shared folders, and what else could I try if that fails?
My Qilive bluetooth headphones, which worked fine in 17.04, won't pair with my PC following a clean install on 17.10. Sometimes they show up very briefly in the list of detected devices before disappearing. I've had no problem pairing a smartphone, however.
The solution offered here didn't work as I can't pair the headphones if the computer can't see them.

I own a Samsung M2070W printer/scanner, which worked in 17.04. After installing 17.10, it prints but is not detected my Simple Scan or Xsane.
The latest drivers from the Samsung website are installed.
It is detected by sane-find-scanner but not scanimage-L. Output from the former:

I tried modifying the .bashrc as suggested in Samsung SCX-4200 Scanner not working (printing OK) 14.04, but it didn't work.
I've seen this issue on several forums but no one seems to have a solution.
I've been trying the LibreOffice ribbon equivalent, but I find the menu items almost impossible to read. As the screenshot shows, it gives dark grey text on a darker grey background.
Is there a theme that would give better contrast?
Sometimes, when I log in, a window pops up marked "Web authentication from Google", saying "GNOME Evolution would like to:" followed by a list of things (view and manage mail, view email address etc.
When I enter my login details, the window disappears, then pops up again, and again, and again... Clicking on "Allow" or "Deny" makes no difference, it just keeps coming back. This seems to happen at random occasions on login, and Online Accounts seems to show everything OK.
Why is this happening?
When I had 16.04, I used the Google Drive integration feature described here on OMG Ubuntu
Since upgrading to 16.10, with Nautilus 3.20.3, that feature seems to have disappeared. It was there on one occasion, but I haven't seen it since, nor have I found an obvious way of getting it back even though I've activated it in Gnome Control Center.
Has the feature been lost with the upgrade?
I had Intel Graphics installed on 14.04, and since upgrading to 16.04 I get frequent error messages on booting or updating. I've attached a screenshot.
It's clearly something to do with the old Intel Graphics Installer. Can I remove it safely? Is there a ppa I should remove?

I upgraded from 14.04 yesterday, all going well generally but one weird thing; when I log on, Libreoffice Write starts automatically. It's not in my startup applications, and never has been, so what could be going on?
I have been running Lubuntu 13.10 on a netbook with a French keyboard, with the default language set to English. When I upgraded to 12.04, the default keyboard layout changed to US.
At the login screen, the keyboard layout must still be French as I have to type in the password as if the keyboard were French. When I log into the guest session, the panel indicator shows the US layout but quickly switches to French before I can type anything. However, when I log into my own session, the keyboard remains US.
I have used lxkeymap to set the keyboard layout to French, but the change isn't permanent. Now, when I start lxkeymap the layout immediately switches to French. I have tried the solutions suggested here but none of them make the change permanent. How can I permanently set the default layout to French?
I have recently installed the Xubuntu desktop alongside Ubuntu on my netbook, as it's lighter. I also have the Ubuntu One indicator applet, which shows up fine in the Ubuntu desktop but is replaced by something rather less appealing in Xubuntu.

On upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10, the system wouldn't reboot, it just hung. I decided on a clean install and rebooted from a USB stick with the 12.10 ISO image. On installing, it detected that 12.10 was already present so I chose the "Reinstall" option.
It seemed to hang on reinstalling (spent about an hour doing seemingly nothing, so I turned off and rebooted, having decided to go for a clean install. However, the netbook no longer boots from a USB stick. When I hit ESC or F2 I get the option, but it either skips straight to the hard drive (and broken system) or dumps me in the BIOS. I've tried changing the boot order, but it still skips over the USB.
I've tried other live USBs and the same thing happens. I've also remade the live USB, but the issue continues. Is there any way to rescue this netbook?
Edit - Booting from the hard drive takes me to a BusyBox shell. Is there anything I can do from there?
If I didn't know the command for a specific application, it used to be possible to create a desktop shortcut, then look at the properties. This was handy, for example, if I wanted to add a programme to the "Startup applications" list.
With Unity, that option is gone, and I have to log out and log bank in with the "Classsic" desktop to repeat the procedure. Presumably I won't be able to do even that after 10.10, so is there a better way?
I upgraded to 11.04 today. I had some problems when the system froze with 2 minutes to go; I was forced to do a hard reboot, but the system appeared to work OK. (described here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/40295/distribution-upgrade-froze-my-system)
As the system hadn't been cleaned up before rebooting, I ran Computer Janitor, but had to stop it when I saw it was deleting things I needed to keep (e.g. Faenze icons vanished). Since then I have been unable to install anything via apt-get, Synaptic or Software Centre. I can add PPAs, but attempting to install anything returns the following message:

The only way I can install anything is by downloading the deb and installing manually.
Trying to install with the Software Centre causes a window to open saying "An unhandled error occurred). Clicking on "details" reveals the following:

EDIT - I tried Jordy's solution. When I then checked for local or obsolete packages in Synaptic, one was marked in red and marked for removal (rec-applet). When I attempt to remove it, I get the message:
E: rec-applet: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 1
It's as if that was blocking everything else, but there doesn;t seem to be a way of removing it.

I feel a bit dirty but it did work, and no need to reinstall the OS.
I have always backed up my home directory to an external hard drive using the cp -r command.
Until recently, it worked fine, but now I regularly get the error message cp: cannot create regular file followed by invalid argument or cp: cannot create symbolic link followed by operation not permitted.
I've tried sudo cp -r but the issue persists. What am I doing wrong?
