I don't know exactly how LiveCD works, but I know that everything is happening on the RAM memory, so a great part of the RAM would be used by the OS itself. Can I really experience performance in a LiveCD context?

I'm trying to decide between Xubuntu 14.04 LTS and Elementary OS Freya (both based on Ubuntu), to see which one would be more lightweight for my machine.

My specs are: Intel Core i3, 2GB RAM, 320 HDD

I've already have installed Xubuntu 14.04 LTS but tends to get veery slow sometimes. It could be anything (dropbox, locate database update, several chromium tabs + opening smth else, slow wakeup after suspended, etc)

ddclient seems powerful, however the only status message I can see is that it is running, by doing sudo /etc/init.d/ddclient status.

Is it possible to check what current ip is cached? since when? what's the time left until the next check? what's the host associated?

Just like No-IP client for Windows.

In Xubuntu 14.04, Light Locker and Power Manager settings are different control panel views, however, there are screensaver settings inside Light Locker's one. Anyway, there's no screensaver options to choose one from, so I deduce it just turns off my monitor.

I'm confused about it. Where should I configure when to turn off my monitor? Does Power Manager settings overrides Light Locker screensaver settings?

For example, the included Parole (media player) includes an option to deactivate screensaver when playing. Would Power Manager settings turn off my monitor anyway?

By the way, what does Monitor power management control inside Energy settings -> General mean?

Is there any short way to save the pipe output to the same file that it's processed. For example, this is what I am actually doing

$ cat filename | sort | uniq > result
$ rm -f filename
$ mv result filename

I was wondering if there was a way to do it in just one line (not appending those commands using &&)

I'm not sure how many of you play music, but in Windows there are several virtual MIDI loopback software to route MIDI from one program to another. For example, loopMIDI and midiyoke, and LoopBe1. In Mac, I think it is known as IAC drivers.

Is there any virtual MIDI loopback solution for Ubuntu/Linux?

How could I hide the standard output of a process only when it is running in background?

For example,

test.sh

Now, I run the script. I stop it. I put it back to test it keeps running. Then I put it on background but it keeps printing in the standard output and I can't keep working. Is there a way to redirect or hide the process output ONLY when it is on background?

This is rather a beginner question. I wonder what happens when sleep command is triggered from a bash script, for example. That job would still running, with less priority?

I don't know why I can't trap Ctrl^C in this simple script.

I've tried using INT instead of SIGINT, without success.

I've read that if anacron is enabled cron doesn't run the scripts inside cron.weekly/hourly/daily/hourly, as not to run them twice. So anacron takes responsability on that folders.

However anacron doesn't work with hourly scripts. So, who runs /etc/cron.hourly?

Are they safe?

Actually, there are at least 4 or 5 folders where icons are stored! I'm confused. I never liked those linux folders organization when you are the only, and begginer user.

I would like to change/add app icons, for example, when a scalable one isn't provided. However I have to dig into these directories, because some .desktop app files just gives the name of the app assuming the OS knows where to find them.

In pixmaps folder I found icons in .xpm format. They are usually 16x16 or 32x32. However there are apps which seems to have scalable ones somewhere.
