Newly installed Ubuntu 24.04, I'm in the process of adapting it to my liking...

One thing is to delay minimally at the grub menu, though always show it.

Hope the info below can tell what might be wrong,
as this should set it to delay at grub menu in 3 seconds, but this is apparently ignored.
The actual delay is showing a countdown from 30 seconds - which I believe is some sort of default.

After booting the install media, going into "Try mode"

In a naive move I reformatted the "rewritable" partition to FAT, from ext4(?), expecting it to still work in the same manner (for general data storage).

It was not that easy...

As I boot /dev/sdb3 gets mounted at /var/crash, which is writable as I do sudo -i only.

Any tips on how to restore "writable" for the intended use, AND keep FAT32/VFAT/exFAT as type?

Is there a viable (easy?) way to tinker with the iso9660 image to get this working?

From another Linux (a VM!) with the USB-stick inserted I see:

... do not provide any direct insight into whether update-alternatives actually can be used for e.g. using a more recent python, or pyside6 as an alternative for pyside2 (focal).

The man page for 20.04 states:

Different packages providing the same file need to do so cooperatively.  In  other  

words,
           the  usage  of update-alternatives is mandatory for all involved packages in such case. It
           is  not  possible  to  override  some  file  in  a  package  that  does  not  employ   the
           update-alternatives mechanism.

... which makes me wary of using it (for python and pyside6 specifically right now).

Any insights into actually using it for e.g. pyside6 specifically?
Noted after writing the above: no pyside6 available through apt-get.

e.g. "reboot" by use of menus: 10-30 seconds delay to just bring up the first menu!

As you can see (below), I have folding at home client running;
it runs close to 24/7 since quite long; closing up on 10k WUs.

All runs on a basically "vanilla" Ubuntu 20.04, fully updated (done daily).
I use specific selected software packages, less than 10 of them, a larger selection of packages (PPA-based mostly, deb's in some cases; e.g. fahclient) gets used in bash. I avoid other types of installs, not impressed by snap.

So: Some time ago i noticed that the computer became less and less responsive with growing uptime. For long I thought it was the FAHClient processes, as pausing them allowed the computer to be used. But recently this has shown to not have much effect any longer.

Launching top and having it running finally revealed one more possible problem:
gnome-shell shows with very high CPU% -numbers.

Launching top for specific pids, like:

Still probing this... not that experienced with similar issues.

What to do if the recommend way to install the latest driver in the System Settings > Software and updates or Ubuntu software FAILS?

e.g. what most answers in How do I install the Nvidia drivers? and many others aims at.

Looking at: Library corruption error during apt-get update The "remedies" does not help, the problem persists.

Reading this: Ubuntu 16.04: appstreamcli error while get-update ... sadly has an older version to download and install as remedy.

Using:

sudo apt update

.. brought in an update to nvidia 384.111

Next reboot made no login and password prompt appear, just the background image. Attempts to access text mode console, by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 appeared dead (nothing happened). So in the end I had to hold the power button for 5 seconds - to get the computer turn off.

How do I remedy this?

gimp 2.9.5 failed to update properly, and attempting to fix it with the general remedy proposed all over askubuntu fails, like this:

CTRL+ALT+T and then
Menu: Edit > Profile Preferences > gives you this dialog:

NOTE: This defines the INITIAL size of the Terminal window.

With this settings (which is similar to what I used in 14.04) doesn't make the terminal be 160 columns, but in Terminal 3.18.3 I see:

NOTE: I have no trouble resizing but wish to have it way larger without the "mouse fiddling".
No setting above 113 is obeyed - I wish for a remedy.
Is there REALLY a legitimate REASON for the limit?

Whatever I google turns up non-relevant info, I'm out of ideas.

When using: System Settings > Color > (select display) > Calibrate ... to attempt to do calibration on a display I consistently get:

Checking the list I see among others 'TeX, ruby, r-cran, php. openjdk, ocaml, mysql, mono, lua, libreoffice, libjs, libghc, latex, gnustep, gcc-4.6, autotools, bacula. apache2, aolserver, ...'

This list seems so overly long and content-rich that I said No for that install.

Anyone with insight here?

All I want is to get "up and running" on sqlite3 (and nothing else).

I'm a bit of a beginner on SQL,
but see the usefulness both in private projects and at work.


In the end, the basic question:
Is there some way to reduce that list to a more reasonable one?

a) With the lines as shown I get the profiling (System Settings > Color > Calibrate) for the MAIN DISPLAY ONLY (I have four of them! i.e. not full functionality) loaded as I log in. The group on line 68 is vital for xorg-edgers nvidia driver (nvidia-337 and nvidia-settings installed)

b) if I swap lines 67 and 68 I WILL NOT get to access USB devices in Virtualbox 4.3 (.12 has a remedied "Shared cliboard" compared to 4.3.10 - which is availble in U.S.C. - I have tried both).

From this I conclude that the LAST line in the /etc/groups file isn't read / used as it should. The empty line (#69) doesn't matter as it seems to me.
