The margins in gedit are preposterously large.

They are so big they cause nearly 40% of the printed page to be blank.

There seems to be no way to adjust the margins. There is no option for it in the print dialog.

I read that you must go > Page setup > Paper size > Custom paper size, then create a custom size with the margins you want. I did this but it made no difference. I still got 40% blank space. That's 40% of all trees chopped down for printing from gedit are for waste.

What can I do about this?

Laptop screen remained blank after resumed from suspend, though external monitors were working.

Could not do anything about it because 'Displays' dialogue opened on the primary screen, which was the laptop screen. Don't want to simply reboot, because can't easily check what needs saving, and indeed may not be able to save if can't see primary screen.

So how get the laptop screen back to life?

This was, by the way, after I had entered the user password. It wasn't one of those common occasions where the screens are blank when you are trying to enter the password.

I installed Baloo search on Ubuntu 18.04. It gave me version 4:5.44.0-0ubuntu1.

Looking for a more recent version, I found the kubuntu ppa. That says it has Bakoo version 5.47.0-0ubuntu1~ubuntu18.04~ppa2.

I added the ppa and installed Baloo again:

$ sudo apt install baloo

add kubuntu repository
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
sudo apt-get update

But apt said I already have the 'newest version': 4:5.44.0-0ubuntu1 .

I am assuming it is simply okay to install Kubuntu (kde) packages on Ubuntu, and that the ppa to use is kubuntu-ppa/backports.

What do I do to get the latest version? Are there any good reasons why I should not? And is there a better place to get it. (I notice Baloo seems not to be available as a Flatpak).

To clarify, I installed the following packages:

Firefox is not displaying pages properly after Ubuntu updates on 19 Feb 2020. Firefox itself upgraded to 73.0 on 18 Feb.

Chrome was updated at the same time. It does not exhibit the same problem.

Drive not recognised, it seems, by either USB 3.0 port or USB 2.0 port.

Windows recognised it. I transferred files.

After connecting the drive to the USB 3.0 of a machine running Ubuntu 18.04, (and after a wait for the connection attempt to peter out) dmesg reported this:

Then tried it in a Windows machine and found it worked.

The chained USB hub then did not work when I reconnected it. But a USB mouse worked fine when then removed from the hub and connected instead direct to a USB 2.0 port on the machine.

Perhaps it's a dicky drive? But why then would it seem to work fine in Windows?

UPDATE:

Windows can't actually format the drive. So it does seem like dicky hardware.

Ubuntu Software Updater just offered me a checkbox while updating libssl1.1amd64:

Restart services during package upgrades without asking?

Is this permanent or per update session? And what are the risks of it putting a spanner in my works?

(The button is, alas, not very informative.)

I can guess how this might be good and how it might potentially cause problems. Likewise, I can imagine times when it won't matter if it screws up my current workspaces + tasks, and times when I'm in the middle of something and can't risk the interruption.

So I can't really answer the question without first knowing whether by checking the box I make the choice permanent, and what risks there are to my workflow and various open docs etc. So does it, and what does it?

And will it lose my data?

I reduced the size of my filesystem. Now reducing the size of the partition in fdisk, I notice that fdisk wants to create the resized partition at a different sector.

Here's the partitions as they stood before I attempted to resize:

I deleted partition 5, and went to create a new one in the same place at the reduced size.

But fdisk says:

It wants to start the new partition in a different sector. Why would it want to do this and will it lose my data?

btw: fdisk reported, upon displaying the partitions originally: Partition 2 does not start on a physical sector boundary.

These were the partitions the Ubuntu installer created, using the standard settings for an encrypted lvm install, and opting to wipe the disk.

I use kfind on Ubuntu. I need to set the default apps it uses to launch files it finds.

By default, it attempts to launch kde apps. I usually either don't have them, or don't want to use them.

I most especially want it to launch Thunar when I click 'open parent folder' on a search result.

But I cannot see where to do this. I installed 'systemsettings', the kde config app. But that seems to have no option to set default apps. I looked in ~/.kde/share/apps/ and ~/.kde/share/config, but could find no config setting. I can't see any version of kconfig or kcontrol to install.

So how do I change this setting for KDE apps in Ubuntu?

In answer to Michael Clare (thank you), xdg-mime thinks my default is Thunar. And indeed it is. But not for any KDE app.

Downloaded and installed the linux drivers from the Brother site here.

But the scanner still wasn't recognised.

Brother seems to have removed the linux o/s config instructions from its support pages - i.e. here and here, which had been the source of earlier solutions to this problem given here and here. The OS support information page in its FAQS and Troubleshooting section refer only to Windows and Macintosh. If you look elsewhere, you will find a page of linux information. It says "The Brother Linux scanner driver works only with a superuser by default". It points to a page where it says is given the means to make the scanner work for non-sudo users - perhaps, then, SimpleScan. That page contains fix downloads for numerous OSs, but nothing later than Ubuntu 13.10. Downloading and installing that file all the same does nothing to make the scanner work. If you grub around long enough you will find there is a linux troubleshooting FAQ after all - just not in the place where you would expect to find it. Getting this Brother scanner to work is like threading a needle in a wind tunnel. The first item on the linux FAQ is 'I'm using Ubuntu 16.10. I cannot scan from my Brother Machine'. That is close enough. It says 'Install libusb-0.1-4'. (The Brother driver had dependencies but it did not bother to check them). I do have this usb lib installed already anyway.

One of the earlier solutions (for a different Brother scanner - and the Brother support page with the solution has since disappeared), is quite helpful. It says to put a line in '/lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules', though in fact it should, on my 16.04 at least, be /lib/udev/rules.d/60-libsane.rules. And the line it asks you to add includes a reference to a product ID for a different Brother scanner. Looking on the sane website for a DCP-350C product ID (it wouldn't be DCP-350C -- that would be too easy -- the earlier solution is for a DCP-7030 and that has a product ID of "01ea")... so where were we?... looking on the sane website for a DCP-350C product ID. The sane page for Brother scanners has no entry for the DCP-350C. It says if your device isn't there it's not supported. It says the page was last updated on Oct 05 2003. That's fourteen and a half years ago. I believe the 350C came out a few years later, in 2007.

So the old solution for the DCP-7030 said to add edit the sane config thus:

sudo gedit /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules

And to add this (in the right place):

Since my config appears to be in 60-libsane.rules and I don't have a product code, I edited the config thus:

And restarted the machine. This did not work.

I also moved some files the Brother intsall routine seems to put in the wrong place - at least, according to reports elsewhere such as here.

That involved copying Brother files from cp /usr/lib64/ to /usr/lib. (I had downloaded and installed the 64-bit version of the Brother driver).

The instructions to do this seemed out of date. And since Brother's website says its Brscan2 driver must be used with the DCP-350C, the filenames may differ. I copied mine thus:

This blind alley was suggested by Brother itself. It's linux FAQ for the DCP-350C (if you can find it), says (for "Ubuntu 11.10 or higher"):

Copy the following files under /usr/lib64/ to /usr/lib/.

Another tip was to actually run the brscan-skey file that is offered as download with the driver, by simply entering brscan-skey at the command line.

At some point, something must have gone right because the Brother driver now tells me the device is recognised:

$ brscan-skey -l

 DCP-350C          : brother2:bus3;dev1  : USB                  Not registered

However, SimpleScan still says no devices are recognised.

Also, Brother says that brscan-skey allows scanning to be performed from the scanner's own console, using its 'scan-to-file' and 'scan-to-image' options. When I do so, the scanner says 'Connecting to PC', but nothing more happens.

I can get the 350C to scan when I call it from a trial version of a commercial linux scanning tool called VueScan. But the trial version puts water marks across the scanned image, making it useless to me. Moreover, the full version is expensive, and demands an annual subscription. And I only came across it while trying to find a way to get SimpleScan to work - or indeed, any open source scanning software.

The point is that VueScan just works. (But it does so in a way that leaves the scanner dysfunctional to other tools). It proves the scanner can be used with open source tools on Ubuntu. The question is how.

After reducing the size of /root volume of an encrypted partition using lvm, I get this error when ubuntu boots:

cryptsetup: cryptsetup failed, bad password or options

The partition itself is fine. I can open the encrypted container, and mount and browse the file system, if I go in manually from a live usb.

I reduced the size of root using the steps given in these guides:

Since the resize did actually work, it is not strictly necessary to show what steps I took to do the resize. But I replicate them here for assurance, and the possibility that they are the source of the error.

(I also renamed the logical volume group, for ease of typing, from ubuntu-studio-vg to sys-vg).

Steps I took to reduce the volume size were as follows:

sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 bonse
sudo e2fsck -f /dev/mapper/sys--vg-root
sudo resize2fs -p /dev/mapper/sys--vg-root 150G
sudo e2fsck -f /dev/mapper/sys--vg-root
sudo lvreduce -L 150.1G /dev/sys-vg/root
sudo lvremove /dev/sys-vg/swap_1
sudo pvresize --setphysicalvolumesize 158.2G /dev/mapper/bonse
sudo lvcreate -L 8G -n swap_1 sys-vg
sudo mkswap -L swap_1 /dev/sys-vg/swap_1
sudo mount /dev/sys-vg/root /mnt
sudo umount /mnt
sudo pvchange -c n /dev/mapper/bonse
sudo cryptsetup status bonse

Last statement gives:

...offset: 4096 sectors ...size: 624136192 sectors

Then:

sudo cryptsetup resize --size 309082032 bonse
sudo vgchange -an
sudo cryptsetup luksClose bonse
sudo fdisk /dev/sda

In fdisk:

  • deleted sda5 and sda2
  • created new sda2 as an extended partition: size +159G
  • created new sda2 as an extended partition: size +159G
  • created new sda5 as an extended partition: size +158.9G
  • changed sda5 partition type to '8e: linux LVM'

Finally, edited /mnt/etc/fstab mousepad, initially replacing the root and swap devices so that references to ubuntu--studio--vg were replaced with sys--vg. But this didn't work. So I changed the device references to UUID=< and used the LV UUID given for each volume by lvdisplay >.

The result, to recap, was error on boot. But still able to open, mount and read the drive manually.

My update manager stalls because it says I do not have enough space. So I need to delete old kernels.

The usual routine is to search Synaptic Package Manager for 'linux' or somesuch and try and discern from the fog of versions and variations of kernel which can be deleted - the aim being to leave the two most recent installations intact: the one currently in use and one other as a fallback. It's usual to see kernels and kernal images. I usually just leave the two most recent of each.

I find today, however, my sub-intelligent guesswork is inadequate.

Synaptic seems to show I have five kernals installed, or consuming disk space at least, of varying naming conventions. Aside from wondering how demented the rituals must have been that summoned such a demonic system as this, I find it less obvious than ever which can be deleted.

Synaptic says the following kernels and modules are installed:

I would normally just blindly delete anything with a number less than the two highest numbers there. But here there are two sorts of kernal image, with the one that looks most important having the oldest number. And the only one that looks like an actual installed kernel also has the old, old number that would normally indicate it should be deleted.

So if I delete the ones here that have the oldest numbers I would be deleting the two that look like they most need to be kept. If they do need to be kept that would suggest the more recent 'images' are all superfluous. Yet if I delete all the superfluous-looking images I would be left with what I would assume is just one kernel.

Which ones can be deleted and which ones should be kept, and why?

The stutter occurs at random when playing mp3 files.

It also occurs specifically when using space bar to pause/restart a running video. But it only occurs if that video has been fwd/rev using the arrow keys.

Some obvious problems:

  • it seems to be looking for options in the directory where the video its playing is located it can't find an input.conf file in the user's home directory it keeps "trying to enable screensaver" (20 times in this brief test) it keeps "trying to disable screensaver" (14 times in this brief test) it keeps looking for a video called "filename" in the user directory where it was launched

The thing that makes mplayer the greatest media player are its keyboard shortcuts and the faultless control it usually gives over playback position and speed.

Where can I find Gedit preferences in Xubuntu?

They are like some rare, elusive bird.

Numerous help forums like this give varying reports of where it might have been spotted. But you go where they say they saw it and you will see no sign that it was ever there at all. No poop. Nothing.

I've tried and failed to find it by looking in:

  • Xubuntu Settings Manager
  • ~/.gconf/apps/
  • /usr/share/gedit/
  • ~/.config/gedit/
  • ~/.gnome2/
  • /usr/share/doc/gedit/

At each juncture, I was meanwhile also searching for the answer in forum hell.

There is a routine in forum hell. It goes like this: someone like me, who knows nothing, asks a stupid question in a forum; then a procession of goofs who know next-to-nothing take turns in guessing the answer. The person who asked the question gives up the will to live. Then some other bozo like me comes searching for a similar answer and after spending half their morning following the goofy guesses up dead ends gives up the will to live as well.

That's roughly what happened.

I looked for the Gedit preferences in the Gedit menu as well. But it had only some of its preferences available. Like they where a lure to get users to look under the bonnet. If you want to change the colour settings in Gedit you have to get a degree in untying granny knots, because that's the skill you need navigate the linux file system, configuration files and help forums to do something as simple as change a colour.

Back to the question of where the Gedit preferences are, I looked finally on the Gedit website. It had nice Mickey Mouse instructions for changing the Fischer Price preferences you can already find easily enough in the Gedit menu - and are thankfully already plain and simple to use. So it had some nicey nicey help pages on the things you don't really need help on. And happy smiley silence on the stuff that causes you to seek help.

It has seemed for a long time that Gnome's solution to the general problem of linux being such a tangle was to oversimplify until there were barely any options left at all: just a few because we don't think the stupid people we make software for will be able to cope with any more.

They may have a point. My head hurts. And I don't actually have a keyboard. I can't operate one. I have special pads like on those electronic drum kits they had in the eighties. And I thump my hands up and down on them. It makes nice noises. And someone interprets them into the words you see here.

What I'm thumping at is I would like to increase the document history list in Gedit like wot I had before my linux crashed and made me have to reinstall everything again. I need to do this because after I installed everything again, Linux crashed again and I lost all my open documents. I mean, I don't know where they are. And the Gedit menu only shows the last five.

Btw, I second what he said:

And btw, I do think gedit is brilliant. And this having to look under the bonnet, though shere hell, has not been without its rewards. I have discovered that there are such things as Vala and GObject - Ooh, that might be nice - I just don't have any time to look at them because I need to get some work done and I've already wasted too much time firefighting bugs and trying to do something as simple as change preferences. Linux might be free but it makes you poor.

And and btw, the problem with these settings managers is not that they offer too many preferences but that they are written in dalek. Many preferences are good. Daleks are bad.

And and and btw, StackExchange wouldn't let me add a xfce4-settings-manager tag because no such tag already exists and I don't have enough browny points to create one. But it's a package name. Why not allow any tag to be created that matches against package names and wotnot?
