The command gnome-screensaver -l or with the option -a locks the screen and turns it black. I actually just want to see the screensaver (a huge nice clock). Currently I have a python script that makes use of gnome-screensaver -l from here. But it shows the locked screen only for a second or less and then the screen turns black. I've already set the "dim screen when inactive" setting in the power settings to off. What can I do to display the clock (see image) after a few minutes?

Currently the screen turns black after 1 minute and when I move the mouse, I can see the clock. But I want it to be displayed all the time when I'm idle.

I've already read many threads on this issue but none of the answers worked for me. I try to access http://localhost/phpmyadmin but it gives me 403 Forbidden (You don't have permission to access /phpmyadmin on this server.). So I try to reconfigure phpmyadmin step by step:

which is something I don't understand, because I can connect to mysql:

Edit:

When leaving Name of the database's administrative user (Step 7) at default (debian-sys-maint) no error occurs. But what user name is that? Where does it come from? Can't I change it to root?

And http://localhost/phpmyadmin is still not accessible.

I am not sure if it's the keyboard layout or what.

the keyboard doesn't work correctly. For example there is no letter 'i' or '.'

It really troubles that I can't use i. Can't even paste it. "exit" contains an "i", so I tried "logout":

The problem is, that I want my i back. I've read that it could make sense to check $LANG

I have a confusing situation with my python installation on ubuntu.

All I wanted was to have python3.4 executed under the command "python". So I copies /usr/bin/python3 to /usr/bin/python, because python --version returned 2.7 and now it returns 3.4. I don't know if this was a mistake.

I tried to install a package with pip and that failed. Then I tried to reinstall python (sudo apt-get install --reinstall python) and the terminal gave me the hint to run "apt-get -f install" without package name.

What am I supposed to do to get python2 and python3? How can I reinstall python using apt-get?

I'm trying to install TP-Link TL-WDN4800 Adapter with Ath9k under trusty. It should work just out of the box for windows and linux. On windows it works, but on ubuntu 14.04 (same computer) it doesn't. Sometimes I am able to connect, but then the internet is still veeeery slow.

I also changed the bandwidth of the router from "20/40 MHz (auto)" to "20 MHz". After that, I wasn't able to connect to the wlan at all. So I changed it back.

From all solutions I have read in the internet so far, nothing works.

Network manager can see the ssids of different networks, but fails to connect.

Right after authentication, wlan is deauthenticated (what is reason=3?). I dn't know why.

EDIT2: I also tried this answer: sudo killall wpa_supplicant Oddly, that helped me to connect, but it didn't really work (veeery slow connection).

UPDATE: With EDIMAX WLan Stick (8€) everything works out of the box. But with TP-Link TL-WDN4800 (35€) I have these problems...

As stated in the answer and comments the solution could be to remove TKIP. But I have a secondary router in repeater mode and that doesn't work with AES (don't know why). However, I don't see why removing TKIP would help, when connection is possible with different wlan adapters.

But still I'd love to get the TP-Link Wlan adapter to work under Ubuntu.

I'm trying to gzip all files on ubuntu that have the file extension .css, .html or .js. in a top directory and all subdirectories. I want to keep the original files and overwrite the .gz file, if already existing.

So when I have n files, I want to keep these n files and create additional n archive files. Not just one.

My try was to run a script that looks like this:

gzip -rkf *.css
gzip -rkf *.html
... one line for each file extension

First: I need to have one line in that script for each file extension I want to gzip. That's ok, but I hope to find a better way

Second and more important: It does not work. Although -r should do the job, the subdirectories are unchanged. The gzip file is only created in the top directory.

What am I missing here?

Btw: The following is a bug in the verbose output, right? When using -k and -v option

-k, --keep        keep (don't delete) input files
-v, --verbose     verbose mode

The verbose output says it replaces the file, although "replace" means that the original file does not exist after the replace. Anyway, THis is only the output thing.
