Software manager notified me Wednesday that the update to 20.04.1 was available. I ran the update and saw no issues during it. After the restart I had no internet connection. I'm connected via Ethernet. I installed a new Ethernet cable however still no internet. I booted into a live session (which I'm using now) and internet works perfectly. I've not had this problem with any of my other LTS upgrades and not being well versed on networking I really don't know what/where to check. I'm connected directly from the desktop to the DSL modem. The computer is a Dell Optiplex 780 with updated BIOS. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

All connectivity problems have been fixed. The last real issue I have is this warning from my syslog:

postfix/postdrop[429191]: warning: mail_queue_enter: create file maildrop/252039.429191: Read-only file system

This appears to be related to Netdata which up until my upgrade to 20.04 worked flawlessly. Besides being written to my syslog it's also written to the Netdata error log. Currently I can't load it up in my browser (Firefox).

As if by magic, just like with the network connectivity Netdata started working after restarting for what seems like the 100th time. So, as of this moment all issues I had with the upgrade are resolved to the best of my knowledge.

But so far I've found and corrected these from my 18.04LTS backup of 30 Sept:

1. Bind9 startup script in /etc/init.d missing.
2. All Spamassassin rules in /etc/spamassassin missing.
3. All Spamassassin rules in /var/lib/spamassassin/3.004004/updates_spamassassin_org missing
4. Updates_spamassassin_org.cf missing in /var/lib/spamassassin/3.004004/updates_spamassassin_org missing

I'm wondering if there may be a configuration setting somewhere that I can change to suppress writing this output to syslog and write to another log file as prior to the upgrade it wasn't being written to syslog. I haven't noticed but apparently there's been no Xorg.0.log or Xorg.1.log since Aug of '16.

What does it mean?

This is a generic error message that unfortunately can happen in a number of cases.
How to solve it?

A frequent case for this error message on Debian-based distributions (like   raspbian) is that rsyslog.conf contains the instruction to write to the xconsole pipe, but this pipe is never read. If so, you can simply delete these lines to remove the error message. These lines are usually found at the end of rsyslog.conf.

For other error message, it probably is a good idea to check rsyslog’s issue tracker at github and file a new issue if you can’t find a related case.

I can't see in my /etc/rsyslog.conf file what they mean by "instruction to write to the xconsole pipe"

The system was updated this past Thursday via Software Updater when told a new release was available. There were no glitches and the system booted into 18.04.1 normally. I've been seeing quite a few notations in my syslog that I fail to understand so I'll be asking quite a few questions. The entire notation from the above subject is:

Appreciate any help in understanding what's going on and if this is a problem and not just information being posted, a fix.

Upgraded to 18.04.1 last night via software updater. Few issues but nothing I can't work out. Question on the bionic sources list though. The source for UbuntuZilla seems to have been disabled and I don't see a replacement added:

Question is just what does "snapd.seeded.service" do and why did it fail? Does it affect the running of snaps?

I've decided to resurrect GKrellm on my Ubuntu 16.04 box as I liked the various options for monitoring and other things it does. I installed the GKrellmms plug-in as when previously running it I liked the option of streaming live audio with it. Now however I'm having a problem getting that to work. I want to stream from this site http://network.absoluteradio.co.uk/core/audio/oggflac/live.pls?service=ac When the link is highlighted on the site and "save link as" is selected it's saved as a .pls file (playlist). The link is then shown as http://icecast-beta.timlradio.co.uk/absoluteclassicrock.ogg Per the XMMS2 WIKI at https://github.com/xmms2/wiki/wiki/Using-the-application

Listen to a shoutcast stream (assuming curl plugin is installed) 
using the direct url (ie NOT a playlist file, but the url inside 
the playlist file, the playlist importing code is currently disabled). 
If you don't require a proxy skip the "config" lines:
xmms2 server config curl.proxyaddress your.proxy.address.com:1080  
xmms2 server config curl.useproxy 1  xmms2 add http://207.200.96.225:8020 xmms2 play

I'm 'assuming' that listening to an icecast stream would be the same or similar to a shoutcast stream I entered this at the xmms2> prompt:

xmms2> add http://icecast-beta.timlradio.co.uk/absoluteclassicrock.ogg

then xmms2> play - however, I get no audio. The XMMS2d log at ~/.cache/xmms2 shows:

Pressing xmms2> play at the prompt will play the above selection. NOTE: I can put the URL http://icecast-beta.timlradio.co.uk into Audacious and it plays just fine.

I've installed the xmms2 plug-ins from here - https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/xmms2-plugin-all into /usr/lib/xmms2.

Another option I tried is I converted the URL into an IP with the port for icecast added - http://34.244.146.50:443 still nothing.

Yesterday I updated from ClamAV 99.2 to ClamAV 99.3 (version shown in the subject). Since then I've had an issue where the clamd.socket file is not being created in /var/lib/clamav as it had in previous versions. Here are my configuration files:

Because of this my syslog from yesterday at 7:35am until today at 7:35am when it's rotated is - 238121171 Dec 29 07:35 syslog.1 in fact it's so large for some reason it wasn't compressed. Today's syslog so far is 40027866 Dec 29 16:57 syslog and I imagine by tomorrow morning it will be close to the same size as yesterdays.

So, question is what's causing this and how can I troubleshoot and fix it?

The above kernel and driver were suggested by the intel-gfx mailing list. The box itself is a Dell Optiplex 780.

The problem that I've been experiencing since December of last year is periodically the video will lockup for no known reason.

I had submitted a bug report #1402331 and also contributed information to the one at freedesktop.org #75394

The last time the Hangcheck...error showed up was 19 March of this year however since then there have been numerous occasions where I would notice a black screen with just a movable mouse cursor. Other times the video would freeze when browsing using Firefox. In both instances I'd be able to CTRL>ALT>F1 into a console and reboot. The below was suggested by the intel-gfx list:

be unity (or compiz, gnome-shell etc) or the xscreensaver. And then try

So, my question after all of the above is just how do I further troubleshoot this problem? I can replicate it just by turning on X-Screensaver again.

System is Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS with kernel 3.13.0-43-generic, I have noticed the lockups periodically since 09/13/2014. I can't remember what kernel version was in use then possibly kernel 3.13.0-35-generic or -36.

It has continued periodically through versions -39; -40 and now to -43. The last time this has happened was Dec 13 14:40:57 localhost kernel: [154858.820009] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] ERROR Hangcheck timer elapsed... render ring idle.

At times when it locks up I will have a cursor on a black screen and will have to press the power button to restart other times it will lockup whenever I'm in an application such as Firefox or Evolution. At that time I can usually CTRL>ALT-F1 log in and run sudo reboot to restart the system.

Does anyone know of a method to get this installed? Had no issues on my old Mandriva machine of course that's dead and gone as of last weekend.

Due to a total burn up, literally, of my Mandriva machine yesterday I've decided to upgrade to a newer and better distro. I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and am slowly getting things back in shape again. I'm using IMAP with my local folders under Evolution. Prior to the crash I was using fetchmail and procmail.

For some reason procmail won't install which is too bad as it was working great for me. I've moved onto Maildrop, have it installed but I'm having problems finding examples of the /etc/maildroprc file.

I've reinstalled fetchmail and courier-imap and both seem to be running fine. Would anyone have any examples of what a maildroprc file should look like? All the sites I've looked at on-line just don't seem to help or else I just don't understand them
