I installed ubuntu 20.04 sometime in june.

by now I'm updated to ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

there's been a few kernel updates. end everytime I run updates Zsys tries to put new kernel version as the first option.

And I'd like nothing more but to use the new kernels.

but they simply won't boot.

when I say won't boot, I mean some kinda freeze happens during the boot process I can't drop to TTY/boot command line and I don't get any error messages (maybe I'm not hitting the right key)

I just have my motherboard logo and that's it.

the ubuntu logo and spinner don't show up and it could stay like this indefinitely if I did nothing.

luckily i still have my old grub entry and with grub customizer I've been keeping it at the top of the list.

but I want to solve this issue now before ubuntu decides I've been hoarding an old kernel for too long.

is there something in particular I'm supposed to do to boot a new kernel with ZFS?

I'm guessing it has nothing to do with the specific kernel version and more to do with zfs being a block that's not yet intricately tied into the rest of the OS. and where ubuntu is able to automatically update the kernel references everywhere else it doesn't yet automatically update a variable inside ZFS that points to the kernel version, or something like that?

I don't know.

I Installed ubuntu 20.04 with the ZFS experimental option enabled, indeed under disks and gparted I can see that most of my current SSD is occupied by a ZFS_member.

I have very minor experience with ZFS. I set up my zfs in a previous ubuntu 18 install but the OS itself was not on ZFS.

anyways : How do I add another SSD (not the same size or brand) to my current ZFS pool?

I just want the most basic "add space" I don't really care about x2, x3 or x10 redundancy (in fact I don't want to alter current ZFS redundancy setup, whatever it is). I just want extra space.

For example none of the two people who answered specified if it was :

I did test just zpool alone to get the man, this works so I know that I'd be able to run the above I just want to not mess it up.

Also I'm planning on doing this by logging out and running my commands in a tty. It does nag me that technically at such a point I have not really exited the environment using my ZFS pool so will that work or should this be done from a Live USB?

I tried this solution and it does not work.

1. the devs have stopped posting builds there. they used to post bimonthly, the last post and build dates back to a year. it is critically out of date.

2. it is not the prefered and recomended install method for linux/ubuntu by the unity devs. they prefer we use the unity hub.

I also tried this (YouTube video by the same guy since the stackoverflow and source he links names match and since the ubuntu desktop cusomisations are exactly the same in the youtube video and the gif). This guy has got the right idea!! if a developer makes a native solution for you, you try that first.

But as you can see in his stackoverflow answer and video: things have changed even more still since the release of that launcher.

The launcher is no longer missing any dependencies pre-launch, it runs out-of-the-box on a vanilla ubuntu 19.10 with nothing else changed. That's one difference. Also it looks and behaves nothing alike visually. It's a v2 and it does have it's own quirks.

What is the method today?

I try to use the "Unity Hub" which is the recommended (and only?) method to install Unity on ubuntu.

I first have to add a license, then I have to set the download folder (which is ignored since it downloads to /tmp anyways)

Then I have to select and download a unity version :

if I, at this point, choose the project tab and hit "new" it still rejects me :

If I try to open the folder I find in /tmp; "unityhub-9fbe5a20-6305-11ea-bdba-858cc54fd2fc" with what seems like the right set of files : "Unity.tar.xz", "UnitySetup-Linux-IL2CPP-Support-for-Editor-2020.1.0a25.tar.xz", ect... then it just adds a new item named after the grandparent of that item (if I select "/tmp/unityhub-9fbe5a20-6305-11ea-bdba-858cc54fd2fc/Unity.tar.xz" it will be called "tmp", and I can no longer add another item from the entire /tmp tree because itt considers that it is the "same item". if I rename the folder and move it to "~/Documents" and open "~/Documents/unityEngine/Unity.tar.xz", the item in the list will be called "Documents") :

If I then try creating a new project, the window opens up but :

... upon clicking "create" I get a contentless error message box and from there on out the app bugs out and becomes more or less unresponsive and must be closed by force :

I got an xbox Elite v2 controller

I followed this technique (as originally seen here) : Xbox One controller Ubuntu 18.04 ...to get the controller running.

The technique seems to be a functional solution for Xbox One S and Xbox One X controllers so I assumed it would function for the elite controller. And for the most part, I was correct.

Here are the steps I took, in order :

I then turned on my elite controller and started scanning on it and from my computer and successfully paired the two.

This resulted in my controller being fully functional (and via bluetooth!).

I then wanted to change the default mappings on the buttons on the underside. For that, I had to go into windows and run the "xbox accessories" app which first updated my controller before I could map.

I successfully mapped what I wanted but now back in ubuntu the connection is less functional for the controller's triggers specifically, seemingly as a result of the update to the controller's firmware :

1. The right trigger sends no input.
2. The left trigger inputs as a right trigger
3. left trigger input is received by the computer constantly from the moment the controller is paried to the moment it is unpaired.
4. the "View button" (left of X/home) sends no input

How do I fix this?

Everywhere I google every article and stack question and forum post seems to imply that wayland ships with ubuntu 19.04 ready to be used.

The implication seems to be that you can log, out click on the cog/gear dropdown and select "Ubuntu" instead of "Ubuntu on X.org" and this will log you in to wayland.

Here's what really happens : you log out ... there is no cog/gear icon, or anywhere else you can click.

After installing gnome-session-wayland and several reboots later, the login screen finally has a cog icon with two options : "Gnome on X.org" and "Ubuntu" selecting "Ubuntu" (was my default session) and typing echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE into the terminal gives me "x11". on "Gnome on X.org", the result is obviously the same.

Maybe this is pertinent : I'm on nvidia and have installed the nvidia drivers from sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

What is a step-by-step guide to landing on a wayland desktop from a vanilla ubuntu 19.04 install on Nvidia?

it seems as if there is a problem with current nvidia driver. this would not explain the missing cog option though.

there has been no communiqué that I know of from Canonical about hiding this option untill the issue is resolved and I imagine it wouldn't hide itself.

I'd like to customize budgie a bit further than what's made available in it's "Budgie Desktop Settings"

For the "Raven" tab we can enable the "Power Strip" but the name is quite false advertizing because out of the three buttons it adds, none are "power"-related, rather they are "session"-related :

• Settings (this one strikes me as even less on topic but I guess it's inspired by vanilla ubuntu)
• Lock
• and Logout

I'd like to at the very least have "power". but ideally I'd like to have more options such as restart, why not the same functionality as ubuntu-vanilla where, upon holding alt "power" is replaced with "sleep".

so ideally :

• Settings
• Lock
• Hibernate
• and Shutdown

So basically are there customizable files that aren't replaced by an update that I could modify to attain this affect, or some plugin that I could install?

I'm an avid vanilla ubuntu user (19.04) I've recently switched to budgie desktop environment.

after some tuning using the "Budgie desktop Setting" app (which is basically "Tweaks" such as "gnome-tweaks", but for budgie, I've gotten rid of Plank and tuned my Panel by adding "Icon task list" for one...), I've obtained what I want : this -> https://github.com/vinceliuice/Qogir-theme#screenshots

However I can't really adapt to the mint / cinamon / windows xp start menu. I've pretty much been onboard with the fullscreen search / "synapse" approach since day one.

and the start menu we've had in ubuntu since ubuntu's adopted gnome is pitch perfect to me.

Am I dreaming too much if I want to ally the best of both worlds (budgie & ubuntu-gnome start/search) ?

given that exiv2 version 0.27 does not exist for Ubuntu in general (it stops at v0.25).

I did the following:

1. I went to the exiv website
2. I grabbed the link for the linux build of exiv 0.27

3. I ran the following

   wget https://www.exiv2.org/builds/exiv2-0.27.1-Linux64.tar.gz
   sudo tar xzf exiv2-0.27.1-Linux64.tar.gz -C /usr/local/lib/
   sudo nano /etc/environment

and then exiv is correctly usable.

But meson does not detect it is there during the build.

To be clear: the package gexiv2 Version 0.10.9 shipped for Ubuntu 19.04 is inferior to my needed version of 0.11.0 at least.

The gstreamer page on pbutils is not very helpful. It seems they assume pbutils utils would ship with the instructions they gave.

this may be a bit obscure but I'm trying to do something a bit tricky :

I'm writing a script that opens up a new tab with commands, I'd like to switch back to first tab after the user has input to the secondary tab (the fact that this tab focuses is intended behavior and the most important) :

the linux uprising ppa is currently forcing version 11 of java on us.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linuxuprising/java

that's nice I like modern and being up to speed, but I have an app that'll only run with java 10.

webUpD8 stopped after 9 and linux uprising started at 10 and that worked (apparently..., I personally never got to test it) until they released 11 and now when you type :

sudo apt install oracle-java10-installer

you get :

Wine is undergoing a bit of an odd transition. The maintainers of Wine's staging branch recently abandoned it, but the Lutris project quickly picked it back up.

At the time you're reading this, it might not be a concern, but right now, it definitely is. As a result, the main guide will focus on the latest vanilla Wine release from Ubuntu, but you can absolutely install the latest staging or Gallium Nine versions when they become available.

I think this particular build of Ubuntu is incompatible with past solutions for running Warcraft 3.

This is exceptionally weird because it just happened as a result of updates (either to OS or Steam) but this pdp xbox one controller that I use just stopped taking inputs and an old fake xbox controller still works?

so something is affecting the driver?

I don't want to install xboxdrv because the precision and latency when using this software instead of native detection is worse.

also it requires more preparation whereas I use my computer for lan parties (of Towerfall and the like) and it's just better for everyone when I have plug-and-play functionality.

Anyone know why this might be occurring and how to fix it?

I went into steam big picture to try and solve this and enabled detection of all controllers. but while my pdp controller shows up, it shows up as "generic gamepad" and does not take any inputs, I tried configuring it but it still detected no movement of the joystick and didn't respond to any button, while the other controller navigated all the menus with ease.

Recently Steam released Steam Play, which uses their fork of Wine hosted by Steam called Proton (GitHub) to allow us to play our complete games library under Linux. It creates wineprefixes for all of your games that don't already have a Linux port and works a far cry better than wine.

I'm trying to run Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance (Steam App ID: 9420) and play it on its unofficial multiplayer client, FAF. The game used to work with Wine, but now has a number of issues (for example, fullscreen doesn't work and high tendency to blackscreen in windowed). But it does work with Proton.

What I'm trying to do here is run this specific Steam game via terminal, not via Steam's GUI.

My intent isn't to circumvent Steam DRM, which running the games via terminal likely wouldn't accomplish anyways, but to run it with dynamic arguments. This will allow setting up multiplayer matches. This will be applied to other games in the future.

But I'm running into trouble when running in the terminal:

I get an Error window: "Application load error P : 0000065615" and closing this simply brings me back to terminal with no extra output. I've experimented with other games:

1. Age of Empires 2 HD fails, but with a much more verbose error message window stating steam must be running, but I had Steam running at the time (and it would run if I clicked the play button in Steam).

2. Bannerman: there is no message at all and even less terminal verbose.

3. Shadow Complex Remastered gets an actual loader screen of the game, runs for about two seconds then crashes with an error:

   CAppInfoCacheReadFromDiskThread took 3 milliseconds to initialize
   CApplicationManagerPopulateThread took 7 milliseconds to initialize (will have waited on CAppInfoCacheReadFromDiskThread)
   

So no game seems to run successfully via this method.

so now we know more about the issue. it seems despite steam being running and every measure to let it know where steam is it does not find steam.

I also tried the same thing from inside the proton folder with the same result.

TL;DR: How to run a Windows Steam game (that manages to run via Proton on Linux) from the terminal.

I'd like to launch a proton app installed via steam but without using steam.

the point being I can make my own command-line launcher and pass parameters etc...

since I'm entirely new to this I don't know by which horn to grab the bull.

will I be able to course through steam's lib or will I be forced to install my own separate version of proton?

The specific game I'm trying to run is Supreme Commander Forged Alliance and it runs fine via steam.

I don't know why people have been giving it garbage steam play reports on the steam play compatibility site but personally; it runs perfectly:

all I have to do is press alt-F4 two times and wait a lot to trick the main menu into showing up and past the main menu there are no bugs at all the in-game experience is fluid and stable.

but yeah, that game's entire online community is on FAF not on steam, both FAF python and FAF java run naively on Linux nowadays for the final key is getting java-FAF to make the correct proton calls to Forged Alliance for the game to fully work :)

Guide to get to where I'm at :

To install FAF :

cd /faf

and run FAF :

downlords-faf-client

or

./downlords-faf-client

now you should have FAF started. If you do not have an account you may create one.

after this, you can go into FAF's settings and there you can configure run folder and run arguments for FA.

Sorry I took so long to update this post. it's gotten 7000 views! it really deserves up-to-date info.

Since I asked a lot has happened. FAF now has more or less linux support. they even have a wiki to installing it (and per distro!) :

right now the wiki isn't all that up to date.

for awhile I could get faf to run with native python, no virtualenv needed but QT's aver changing dependencies and package composition as well as the FAF usage of them has broken that again ... temporarily I hope !

rest assured I've got it running personally and I'm here to offer solace (try skipping steps 6 & 7 first they may be unneeded ):

1. Install some prerequisites : sudo apt update && sudo apt install wget PyQt5.QtMultimedia python3-idna python3-semantic-version python3-pyqt5 python3-pyqt5.qtwebengine
2. cd Downloads && wget https://github.com/FAForever/client/archive/0.16.1.tar.gz (or whichever release is latest at https://github.com/FAForever/client/releases/ )
3. extract (for this example I'll extract to home) (cd Downloads/ && mv client-0.16.1.tar.gz ~/ && cd && tar -zxf client-0.16.1.tar.gz && mv client-0.16.1 faf-client && rm client-0.16.1.tar.gz)
4. cd fafclient/ : move to the working dirrectory
5. sed -i 1,1d requirements.txt : removes cxFreeze from the requirements (it's not required and it will kill compile)
6. virtualenv -p python3 faf
7. pip install -r requirements.txt
8. sudo wget https://github.com/FAForever/uid/releases/download/v4.0.5/faf-uid -O /usr/bin/faf-uid : downloads login binary and : sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/faf-uid allows it to be executed by faf.
9. touch res/RELEASE-VERSION && echo "0.16.1" >> res/RELEASE-VERSION : fulfills faf's final requirement : a release version file.

now it should run but for the heck of it let's make a runner :
