Yesterday I installed Hplip 3.23.5 onto my Ubuntu 22.04 laptop. I followed the instructions on the HP support site for an automatic install.
I want to remove the Hplip icon from the system tray, as I only very occasionally print, and prefer to manually launch HP Device Manager if needed.
How can I get rid of this icon? "Quit" won't do it.
I run typically 7 to 10 active tabs during the day.
I can see that starting from a low value, my swap space usage increases bit by bit all day, until eventually when it has got to about 1GB (out of a max 6GB), maybe over a day or two, system problems. Firefox is the only user application running.
There had been a similar issue on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, using the same configuration and daily tabs, but this seemed to be solved, so that swap usage was stable and low.
vm.swappiness is set to 10.
What has happened here?
Over the weekend I upgraded my dual boot ACER A314 laptop from 18.04 LTS to 20.04 LTS, and then 22.04 LTS. The 22.04 LTS installation seemed to work, but on first reboot, failed.

So far I have, using a Live USB of 22.04:
All the above gave me a working grub with Ubuntu, Windows and UEFI entries. But the problem persists.
I have also subsequently run the Boot-repair program in basic mode from Live CD - problem not solved.
Both the Ubuntu and EFI partitions have 50% free space. The kernels that dpkg sees are 5.4 versions - I would have expected 5.15 or higher - don't know about this.
How to proceed/fix?

When I use dpkg to list the installed Linux images on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, I see two different versions installed. How can this be?
uname -r reports version 5.3.0.40 as the current. Is it safe or do I need to uninstall the older version manually?
I have recently started using tethering through an android phone for internet access.
Connection triggers nmcheck.gnome.org, which I understand is something to do with connectivity facilitation through Network Manager, per this question Some supisious software making request to nmcheck.gnome.org
Fine. Except, I seem also to be receiving an ad attached to the nmcheck response screen. Not fine.
Where is this ad coming from? Is it my ISP intercepting the http traffic? How do I stop this?

I am running up to date Firefox version, and have the browser cookie settings set to disallow third-party cookies.
Often, when browsing a web-site, I am asked by the site to allow cookies. This is usually a pre-requisite to continuing, so often have little choice.
I would like to know if these custom cookie approvals override the Firefox default setting that I have set? Which take precedence?

Using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, when I use the Print to File function, the Date/time printed at the bottom of a page is completely wrong, reading 1970!
The system date, as shown from the command line with the "date" command is correct.
How can the correct Date/time be set for printing?
Using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, I often search from the Mozilla Firefox (52) browser bar.
My default search engine is set to Google, but I find that the first search in a tab always goes to google.com. I want it to go to my local country google site, as this would probably be faster.
I have looked at the Firefox about:config search elements, but cannot see where this direction to google.com is occurring.
Can anyone assist with how to set google to default always to my local country google site?
Edit: Does the DNS service have anything to do with this? Is the DNS being told to go to google.com first, or not?
Edit2: On further investigation, there is xml in files like "/usr/lib/firefox/distribution/searchplugins/locale/en-GB/google.xml" which appear to control search engine urls used. However, even editing these to refer to the local country google site in all cases does not resolve. I am coming to the conclusion that there may be some hard-coding in Firefox itself that is the controlling factor.
I have Ubuntu running on an older laptop. I have noticed that maintenance cron jobs slow things for a few minutes when they execute. This is a problem if, for example, I need the resources for a video call.
The cron jobs are controlled by anacron. Is there a command that I can issue from the terminal that would delay all such jobs from executing for say, 3 hours, while I get on with more important things?
Since the move to 12.04 LTS/HWE, I now seem to have several linux kernel images stored. I don't really care about the detail of what is going on here, but want to know which of the old kernels I can safely delete. I can take a guess, but could someone please advise. I include a screenshot of my existing set-up. Thanks.
I find that I am accessing many pdf files which are downloaded for reading into Firefox. But when I go to save these files using "save page as", Firefox repeats the data download. As the files can be big, this is tiresome.
Is there a way to avoid this duplication of file data download?
