For reasons beyond the scope of this question, old-school apt-get and deb suit me better than snap. The "Ubuntu Software" application only offers snaps for some applications (e.g. audacity). I could install it using apt from the terminal, but I'd rather default to apt than to snap altogether, leaving snap exclusively for specific things which snap offers a newer version that I perhaps need.
In short, is that possible/how? Any consequences to consider?
Keyboard interaction seems so broken to me the I must be doing something silly.
Simple scenario: <Ctrl>-<Alt>-T and I get a new terminal. I click "Terminal" and "Reset" and the terminal resets. So far, so good.
Same scenario, using only the keyboard: <Ctrl>-<Alt>-T and I get a new terminal. I'd like to access the "Terminal" menu with <Alt>-T, but that doesn't work. If I access it with the mouse, I'd like to trigger "Reset" by typing r. Doesn't work, either. However, if I press a cursor key (up or down), typing r works.
Now, why doesn't <Alt>-T access the "Terminal" menu and why doesn't r run the "Reset" command (without cursor keys to nudge it) and how can I get this very, very, very basic and widely used interaction style to work?
Or to put it another way, I want to "Paste" with <Alt>-E p instead of <shift>-<control>-V. How?
I click a link in Thunderbird (31.8.0) and Firefox (40) opens, but it's always in the background, even though keyboard focus is transferred from Thunderbird to Firefox. I have been pressing Alt + Tab twice as a workaround for what feels like years, but I'd like to not have to.
I'm fairly certain that Thunderbird isn't the only application from which I have this problem, but even if it was, I feel the question's still legitimate.
How do I fix it?
I consider it a no-brainer that a smartphone should have a call setting along the lines of "automatically record the last N calls" (deleting the N+1 call record in the process). Unfortunately, that's not the way things work.
Obviously, Android goes to some lengths to prevent users from easily recording phone calls (not sure and don't care about iPhone). There are clumsy workarounds using a headset and similar, but that's 1% of all conversations, basically.
Is call recording something that will simply work on Ubuntu Phone?
Just to be clear, I'm aware there are countries where such call recording is generally illegal, but I don't care about those countries (and even in such countries, call recording is legal under certain circumstances), so making it generally illegal is like making VHS illegal in the '80s to prevent piracy.

I would like to open e.g. webm files using mplayer, but it is not available in the "Open With" dialogue and (quite frustratingly) the dialogue no longer allows selection of the program to use from the file system.
Is there a conf file I can edit directly to get this done?
I have several gvim windows open and one Firefox window. Using Alt-Tab to switch to Firefox works as expected. Using it to go back to gvim does return focus to the gvim window I wanted to write in, but it also raises all other gvim windows (on the current virtual desktop) above the Firefox window.
Is there a way to reconfigure window switching so that all irrelevant gvim windows are left alone and I am able to switch between Firefox and a selected gvim window only?
I use Ubuntu 11.10 on the machine in question.
I have a Logitech C910 USB 2.0 USB camera which supports up to 1080p video recording. I am using the camera on a laptop with a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz CPU. Ubuntu 11.10 recognises the device and allows me to capture both photos and video.
What does not work is high-resolution video recording: I haven't had much luck with anything above VGA resolution. Cheese appears to be hard-coded to use OGG which puts way too much strain on the CPU. guvcview crashes whichever way I try it.
Is it possible to record smooth, 25fps video at 1280x720px+ resolutions on Linux?
