I installed Ubuntu 21.10 on a USB HDD (Toshiba Canvio Basics 1TB)

I have also reinstalled grub in the ESP of the external drive with the following command to get a portable install of grub

grub-install --target=x86_64 --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader=Ubuntu --removable

However the machine does not boot the OS on the external drive (afer selecting to boot from USB HDD). On one machine, a brief Reset system is displayed; on another, nothing can be seen before the reboot.

The disk is fine but during the fail boot, it emits a clank noise... quite scary.

This kind of installation works fine when using another USB HDD (another brand)

So what is wrong with the Toshiba Canvio Basics USB HDD ? Is it Ubuntu ?

So I installed qtcreator package on ubuntu 18.10.

I found out that to get the examples, I also needed the qtbase5-examples and the qtbase5-doc-html package.

But there are still no examples shown in the drop-down menu of the Welcome screen in qtcreator.

I found people with similar problem (for example for archlinux), but trying to fix the path problem does not allow the examples to show up in qtcreator.

Aynone ?

In a new shiny ubuntu 18.04, I am trying to use a python3/pyqt5 script that use QtMultimedia.

It was working fine in 17.10. And now even after installing a bunch of package, I still can't get it to work. I have the following error when a QMediaplayer is instanciated:

defaultServiceProvider::requestService(): no service found for - "org.qt-project.qt.mediaplayer"

I assume it is an error because Qt5 and QtMultimedia can't find a proper backend registered right ?

When I compare this list with the one I got on 17.10, I don't seem to miss any. So ?

I run the script with QT_DEBUG_PLUGINS=1 set, and I didn't see any error or problem.

netplan is now the default network configurator on 18.04

• But on a freshly installed 18.04 system, I am still finding /etc/network stuff with interfaces file and other directories.
• the ifup/ifdown utilities are still installed

Why ? It seems the ifupdown package is a dependance of pppoeconf (?). There is even a systemd service called networking that calls ifquery/ifup/ifdown ???

I have just upgraded from 17.10 to 18.04. Every went smoothly but now my mouse cursor randomly freeze for about 5 seconds.

I was using Gnome Shell on Wayland. And I got no problem (except some lags here and then which seems to be gone); now I am still using it and I have that problem.

Moreover, I tried Gnome Shell on Xorg and the problem is stil there !

I tried changing the graphics driver (the intel one aka i965) by using a more up to date one by using the PPA oibaf. It also changed nothing.

I have not tried yet Unity but ....

• I have changed the battery of the mouse, still no change.
• I have changed the USB port the receiver of the wireless mouse is in, still no change.
• I will try another mouse but I don't expect it to be different because all was fine before the upgrade and not now.

It is really the mouse freezing only and not the display because I let running glxgears while a froze happen, and the wheels were still spinning.

On 17.10, when I connect a Bluetooth device (be it a speaker JBL Go or a headphone MDR-ZX220BT), it is set to HSP/HPF by default.

Moreover, when I try to switch to A2DP with the menu from sound settings of the device in gnome control center, nothing happens.

For the switch to a2dp sink to work, I have to use a script I found, called a2dp.py. Which is simply running pacmd set-card-profile #index a2dp_sink (and this is not always working)

How to make these devices use a2dp by default ?

A second related question, is how to disconnect a Bluetooth device simply without going into gnome control center > Bluetooth > mydevice > disconnect. From the top right menu like it was possible in 17.04, for example. I can't find a gnome shell extension for that.

So it seems nautilus/Files and other software are using the SI units to display file size for some time now, in ubuntu.

But this is rather inconsistent with cli command like ls, du,and df that still use IEC binary units.

One could normally use environment variable BLOCK_SIZE to change the behavior of the cli command, but this is not working (EDIT: here on 17.10) (https://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/manual/html_node/Block-size.html#Block-size)

BLOCK_SIZE=si ls -l -h

still displays it in IEC binary units

behave the same or using BLOCKSIZE either

Is this a bug ? Has it been patched/removed by ubuntu ?

Edit: I want to use the env var to define it globally in my .bashrc

I launched the upgrade process to 17.10 when asked for it (on 17.04).

My screen was locked (and off) during the download of the packages but it flashed by waking sometimes (I was in the dark so I noticed that).

Then an hour later, I wanted to see how the upgrade went but I couldn't login anymore. My password was refused (but I could login without problem on a console Ctrl-Alt-F1) so I guess something was wrong with lightDM ?

So I rebooted, and now the boot process fails with Failed to start Login service which is not related to lightDM anymore but systemd-logind.service.

Edit: systemd-logind log shows that:

Failed to fully start daemon: Connectin timed out
systemd-logind.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
Stopped Login Service.

I can't find much about this on the net

I am trying to make ubuntu detect and connect to a bluetooth transmitter. It does not work by default with the bluetooth setting dialog on 17.04

I have found Can I use my computer as an A2DP receiver / bluetooth speaker? which is rather old as I am using 17.04 and this does not work here.

There is no /etc/bluetooh/audio.conf file. I have tried to add the line Enable=Source in the various file I found in /etc/bluetooth (and restart bluetooth daemon each time with systemctl restart bluetooth) and it had no effect. And finally create a /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf file with the lines.

I can not see the bluetooth transmitter, and can't connect to it obviously

How can I make ubuntu act as a receiver and connect to my audio bluetooth transmetter ?

Does it work for you as described in other thread, meaning it is an issue with the transmitter TT-BA07 taotronics or not ?

I have a chromecast but I don't know my bluetooth adapter ended up being named like the chromecast I have.... (Oh it's a bug in chrome ????)

Nautilus does not see anymore samba share on the network.

It was working before. Now I just got the circle spinning next to networks in nautilus.

Before that, I was able to seee them but unable to access them because it was taking ages and nothing was happening.

Before that, all was working fine.

And the only thing that happened is that I installed some packages to get the samba share running on my mahcine. I choosed "Share that folder" and installed the package required and asked by nautilus.

Edit: So I purged the package installed previously:

samba
samba-common

and it cascades in removing some others. Still nothing

then I redo the install and this time purge all the package:

libaio1 python-dnspython python-ldb python-samba python-tdb samba-dsdb-modules samba-vfs-modules tdb-tools samba samba-common

and it's back instantly. But I got "can't access share place". But it's working manually by using connect to server.

hmm seems like a bug somewhere...

I see several old snap "mounted" and available while only the latest version is used as current in /snap/ubuntu-core

It's not a big deal but do I need older ubuntu core ? Isn't this a bug there are not deleted ? Could I simply unmount and delete the files ?

When installing 16.04, I was asked to turn off "Secure Boot" if I wanted to install 3rd party modules/drivers.

I did not comply.

And when I installed manually the only 3rd party drivers I use (bcmwl-kernel-source), I was asked again (during the installation of the package) to turn off "Secure Boot".

Using bcmwl-kernel-source was perfectly fine with Secure Boot in 15.10. This does not seem to be related to a bug to me.

So this does look like Ubuntu refuse to sign anymore the 3rd party drivers/modules to make it work (??) with "Secure Boot". Or seem to consider 3rd party modules as insecure and breaking "Secure Boot" hence inforcing to disable it to make it clear ?? Am I right ?

I just bought a SSD to replace the HDD in my laptop (Dell Inspiron 15 3521). So I migrated the windows partition, root partition of Ubuntu, and make a bcache caching partition for /home which stays on the HDD. The HDD is now in a HDD caddy inside the DVD drive place.

So the problem is my HDD (?) start sometimes to make ticking noise (but not a clicking one), like a watch but a little louder, every second or half a second, repeatedly and continuously.

Not only this is annoying, but I fear for the health of the HDD.

It is particularly strange given that with my new setup the access to the HDD is limited. What still on HDD is /var partition and a swap but I have 8G of RAM. and the backing bcache /home partition.

I thought it could be the head of HDD parking repeatedly. But a simple script found on the net shows no change in Load_Cycle_Count value from smartctl -a /dev/sdb output

The worrying value that keep increasing is Raw_Read_Error_Rate but it is said to be meaningless for Seagate HDD (here ST500LT012)

Even when I switch to console and stop lightdm, that sound continue.

But if I run a short self-test with gsmartcontrol, that sounds suddenly stops. The short self-test passed without error. I run badblocks on /home backing bcache partition and no errors were found.

I don't know what cause that sound. It does not seem to be a process hammering the HDD. I run only chromium and a terminal

so a lot of tool still use java 7. How to make java 8 the real/default version ? May be reinstall java 8 so that it is automatically set to be default instead of changing each alternatives to java 8 ?

Moreover, when I try to remove java 7, apt-get tries to remove a lot of packages:
