I can't fix Parole media player to play mp4 videos! I search and research on internet but none of suggestions worked for me. I installed latest version via Ubuntu repositories but no avail to play video, I got the following message :

"Required plugin could not be found"

"Parole Media Player requires to install plugins to play media files of the following type: H.264 (Main Profile) decoder"

Before upgrading to version 0.9.1 I had version 0.8.1, also not playing videos. What can I do to fix this? I have all dependencies installed (for parole, for gstreamer, and so on). Attached screenshot of parole. Thanks, Vladi

I have Thunar 1.6 as my default file manager, can I install Nemo as my second file manager? I have doubts of installing Nemo and get conflicts between each other. If it is possible should I change some settings in Xubuntu to run it smoothly ? Thanks, Vladi

On Thunar 1.6, Xubuntu 16.0.5:

I don't know if it's possible, but why when I select a folder in Thunar on left side pane (tree view) and hit for example g, nothing happens. I would expect that the selection jumps to the first match of a folder or file beginning with a letter "g". This behavior works on right side pane (shortcuts view) as expected.

Another issue: selected folder on left side pane, then hit Enter, also nothing happens, I have to hover the cursor over the expander, then left click to open it. Can I change these settings?

Maybe it is a nonsense question, but I would like to format my external HD which contains plenty of files and directories, the HD format is NTFS, if it is possible I would like to format to ext4 but keeping one directory and its files intact. I know that I can backup it before formatting. Is it possible ? I'm running Xubuntu 16.04.5 and this external HD was originally recovered from an old netbook running Windows XP. Thanks, Vladi

When I start my laptop the HD is spinning executing find command without reason, I tried to clean saved sessions, looking in startup programs if there is any command using find command, but I couldn't find anything strange. What can I do to kill this process permanently ? I added a screenshot of top command and the "find" process has "user = nobody". Can be a virus running at startup or logout-login action ? I mean, when I run

dpkg -s thunar | grep "Depends"

it displays all dependencies for thunar file manager. How to run, for example

dpkg -s thunar | grep "Depends" | grep "gtk"

to display only dependencies containing gtk in its name ?

My OS is Xubuntu 16.04.5 and I would like to apply colors to text in mousepad text editor, is it possible? Do I need to download some plugin to that? It would be like a command > format font : type, size, color . Thanks Vladi.

I couldn't find a Portuguese-BR dict. to install on xfce-dict-plugin. I want only a Portuguese-BR dict. I already have por-eng and eng-por installed. Appreciate some help. Thanks Vladi.

When I logout on Xubuntu (xfce) I get a screen to login again, on top bar of this screen is placed an icon and when click it the drop down menu offers 3 options to login: Plasma, xfce and Xubuntu. By default the login is set to Xubuntu, but now I tried Plasma then I get KDE desktop screen and it stuck, displaying a error message that some packages/libraries are missing. I was able to open task manager and ended some processes to return to Xubuntu session. How to fix this issue? do I need to install some pcks to fix that? Another question : what the difference btw xfce and Xubuntu session? thnaks, vladi.

I need help to restore my Wi-Fi and DNS settings to previous state like was before installation of KDE connect. Now I have unstable Wi-Fi (every few minutes disconnect), I can ping, mtr from terminal BUT no browse. I have read every tutorial I found but no success. When I click on network manager icon on panel the connection information shows apparently correct. I'm connected to AP through an Wi-Fi repeater (TP-Link wr802n). Is this issue maybe related to Bluetooth ? Appreciate some help, Vladi PS: KDE connect can ping the phone and vice-versa, but nothing else, i don't know how to browse files and so on. I'm using Xubuntu 16.04. thanks

I'm running Xubuntu 16.04 with whisker menu and trying to change the theme of whisker menu. I have read several tutorials but without success. I have in my home directory a .gtkrc-2.0 file with this content:

Also I read that I need to add this configuration in /home/vladimir/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css. I did but NO effect. As well in /home/vladimir/.config/gtk-2.0/gtk.css. NO effect. What I'm doing wrong? Is something is missing?

I installed geary 0.11.3 in my xubuntu then I added two accounts (first yahoo, second gmail), the messages where syncronized, BUT I only can see and select the first mailbox of the account that I added. I can see all mailboxes for all accounts (yahoo,gmail) but I can't select anyone!!!! only the inbox of Yahoo is active displaying the messages, is this a bug? or I need to reinstall geary? thanks, Vladimir. I'm trying to find some text within PDF files, but the results are not accurate! For exemple I have 2 PDF files which have the word domiciiado. When I run a search for this word (domiciliado), docfetcher shows only ONE PDF file with this word. My question is why docfetcher doesn't show the other PDF file with this word? Is there a difference between PDF files? In one PDF I have only text and the other PDFs are texts and images and this is from a scanned page. What is the catch?

P.S.: the 2 PDF files are in the same directory

I have searched and researched internet to find a program or app for xubuntu to compress pdf files, but I cannot find, I found a Nautilus script to do that but I don't know if it works in xubuntu with Thunar file manager.I'm looking for a GUI program, can some one help me??Thanks Vladimir

I have intalled TLP on xubuntu and I notice a increase of time btw 5 up to 7 seconds on boot time according dmesg output and I have now some ACPI Warnings on boot, I'm attaching my dmesg output and my grub file. What can I do to reduce 5 or 7 sec. on boot time? How to remove these warnings on boot? My kernel is 3.11.0.26, [ 26.568413] this is my boot time.My laptop is DELL inspiron 3521 BIOS version A12. I have skype 4.3.0.37 (32bits) installed in my system xubuntu(amd64), my problem is when I recievied a video call and set to full screen mode the video doesn't fill all the screen, only verticaly and I have 2 black side bars, one on the left and one right side. Is there any setting that I can try to get a really full screen? I recievied a video call with ratio of 640x480 (i have checked the technical informations during a call) and my screen resolution is 1366x768(16:9) my video card is intelgraphics incorporated, thanks for now Vladi.UPDATE: Today I recieved a video call from skype and I picked up from skype installed on windows 7 in my machine running Virtual Box, strange the same machine which I have xubuntu (linux) (host), and the call in fullscreen mode was perfect with no stripes on the sides!!! I think there is some configuration on skype for linux that I can achieve the same fullscreen mode that was in windows guest machine.

I want to speed up the boot time, and I followed a tip to:

1. Edit "/etc/default/grub" and change the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash profile";
2. Run sudo update-grub2 and boot up the machine;
3. Edit the grub config file again and remove profile from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT;
4. Update grub again and reboot.

But the result was a increase of a boot time of 10 sec according to dmesg output!

What went wrong? Why this tip doesn't work for me? How to revert this setting? Where this profile file is saved in Xubuntu? Can I delete this new profile with no problems?

I really need help to install this driver on Xubuntu 14.10. I couldn't get my WiFi USB network dongle (elmak SAVIO CL-63) which came with a CD-ROM containing the drive for chipset RT5370 for Linux.

I have the latest Linux headers and when I run the lsusb command the result is:

So I couldn't install the driver. I added to blacklist.conf:

blacklist rt2x00usb
blacklist rt2x00lib
blacklist rt2800usb

and a directory /etc/Wireless/RT2870STA$/RT2870STA.dat was created

How should I proceed?
