I'd like to have a crontab run once a day to keep some servers updated.
I thought adding @daily apt update && apt -y upgrade to root crontab would work.
Apparently, I've done something wrong because it doesn't seem to update the system?
When I ssh in the motd says there's updates.
Any help is much appreciated!
I installed a piece of software (CloudCompare) using snap as recommended. The issue is I'm unable to read from or write to the secondary HDD that I use as storage. When I use the file browser it's like it's not mounted. If I use a symlink it is blank in CloudCompare's browser.
What could be the issue with the setup? I simply did: sudo snap install cloudcompare

I'd like to startup an Apache Spark cluster after boot using the following command:
sudo ./path/to/spark/sbin/start-all.sh
Then run this command when the system prepares to reboot/shutdown:
sudo ./path/to/spark/sbin/stop-all.sh
How can I get started? Is there a basic template I can build on?
I've tried to use an extremely simple (file: /lib/systemd/system/spark.service):

Which doesn't work.
I cloned a VM and changed its hostname and the sole account name as part of changing it from the source it was cloned from. However, the modified account behaves differently to the original.
It seems like its privileges are different?

I've followed the guide completely up until this point so I'm not sure what is wrong.
I've looked around to try and fix the missing package vtkRenderingOpenGL and followed this post from stackoverflow. I'm sure that I've installed this in the past and so I get:
sudo apt -y install freeglut3-dev

I was wondering if there was a cleaner method to move files into the current directory than this:
mv path/to/file ../current_directory
If I wanted to move a file to the directory above I could go:
mv file ..
Is there a way to represent the current directory?
I wanted to know whether there was currently a method to stream a system's audio to an iPhone via WiFi? I've noticed that this seems to be possible more easily for Ubuntu -> Android but didn't seem to come across any solutions offered for iOS.
Am I missing a server and app pair or some other solution?
I'm still having audio issues via audio jack (post) so I'm looking for simple workarounds...

I've been trying to get PCL (1.8) working properly on my system (Ubuntu 16.04) but I am struggling to get even the basic tutorial to work. I could not install the prebuilt binaries supplied by pointclouds.org so instead followed the answer from this post over on stack overflow and used the native repository from Ubuntu to install v1.8.
I then began to run into the same issues raised in this question. I fixed some of them myself using symlinks to correct paths broken by renaming and also installed the missing packages that I could. However I am unable to successfully create a usable makefile.

As can quite easily been seen, what is outputted is very different to what is shown in the tutorial.
It does create a build file so I can run make which errors and outputs:

I've tried what I can but maybe I lack enough experience to get this all sorted and working.
I also manually installed the package libproj-dev which has been suggested but this did not fix the issue.

I looked around for a solution that still works in 16.04. I found that previously offered solutions including the one which was accepted were for older versions of Ubuntu.
The results were Thunderbird would open but not minimised.
There are alternative solutions here and here that explain ways to do this, they are general purpose scripts which can be adapted. However, it's a bit complex for the task and not tailored to Thunderbird.

I can easily mount the HDD via the GUI and I've created a symbolic link to it which works after I've mounted the HDD via the GUI. However, prior to taking the aforementioned step my symbolic link will not work.
Is there a way to remove the need to mount the HDD manually so my symbolic link always works?
I'm experiencing an extremely unpleasant crackling noise whenever I try to use headphones. Even when I simply perform a sound test and "front left/right" is announced there is a great amount of crackling on the side that isn't being tested.
This has meant that my headphone jack is practically rendered useless because it is very uncomfortable to use headphones at any volume.
System: HP OMEN (15-ax003na)

I've tried both of the solutions offered on this thread for 12.04 and it didn't make a difference.
I'm experiencing very low audio output from my laptop. This surprises me based on the hardware and I was wondering whether there was anything that might be affecting it from an OS perspective? I reformatted practically straight away so didn't test the audio on Windows and therefore have nothing for comparison.
I would say that along with low volume the sound being outputted lacks any real character. It's a pretty flat sound which leads me to believe that it's not the hardware based on the brand.

I'm trying to run an external monitor from my HP laptop running 16.04 via HDMI. I have a GTX965M that I'm running the nvidia-375 driver for. This lets me run two monitors but only in mirror mode. If I change to use separate monitors the resolution seems to spread across the total of the two displays and I'm unable to cancel the setting changes as I can only click on the launcher; I have to wait the 30 seconds for revert.
I followed this post from the forums to install a newer version of the drivers as it is faster than going through Software & Updates which seems to take too long.

I'm not sure whether this comes down to the drivers or the system config.

Update: It has randomly started to work and I'm not sure why because I haven't made any changes. I just booted up and plugged in the HDMI. Also, my nvidia-settings doesn't appear correct according to the one of the suggested solutions so I'm not confident that this isn't a temperamental bug.
This shows only one monitor, the external. It doesn't include the laptop's built in. Is this correct?

Further Update: Then the next time I boot up, this time with the HDMI already plugged in it's back to stretching a single 1920x1080 across two 1080p monitors. I think I have got to the route of the problem. I opened up a terminal to get to nvidia-settings and apparently it's not installed.
This is bizarre as it 100% was installed; proven by the image I supplied in this question. I humored this problem and reinstalled and dual monitors is working again! Is this a bug?? I've added a solution myself because this did solve the problem but I don't understand how it can occur.
