I recently bought a new computer, and had to install and reinstall Ubuntu once now because I'm lacking in technical knowledge sometimes, hence this post... After my last install, I found out, in no time at all with google and/or duckduckgo, how to, using the keyboard shortcuts app Ubuntu provides, kill the X Server session with ctrl+alt+bkspce .... Now I can't find the that information I got so quickly before to save my life (algorthihms musta changed), and I'm getting frustrated looking, only outdated info here so I figured it'd be worth an ask... thanks, and sorry if I missed another post or something...
Robert Sederholm's questions
Just curious if there's anything I could do about this (Is there a setting I can mess with??). I used Totem for the longest time (from 18.04>18.10 at least) and it is my preferred video player for Ubuntu. However, since my upgrade, half of the videos (or so) I try to play end up looking like this
Pretty sure this is a distro-version-wide bug, so if it is sorry for asking. I've been using Smplayer and it's been working just fine, but I'd appreciate any info, thanks
My question is pretty much summed up by the title. GNOME 3.30 touts a new lock/login screen, yet Ubuntu 18.10 lacks any changes to GDM. I was just wondering if there was a way to actually SEE and USE these changes in Cosmic. Thanks in advance. THIS
Though I may have gotten the "mock-up" and the real login screen release confused???
Exactly what the question says, when I install Ubuntu 18.04.1 fresh on my Dell Optiplex 9010, I get an error code on every single one of my browsers that native gnome shell host connection (or whatever) is not enabled/supported even though the browser extension is installed. The reason I like GNOME is its extensions, so I backed out of that install, installed Ubuntu Gnome 16.04, and upgraded to 18.04.1.... Even so, I feel that this issue warrants a question on this site.
edit: I installed the chrome-gnome-shell package, too. So it can't be that.
I upgraded my Dell Optiplex 9010 to Ubuntu 18.04 from Ubuntu 16.04. None of my GNOME web-browser-extensions (used for managing and installing extensions) work, neither the ones I have installed on Chromium, Chrome, or Firefox.
This has only been the case since my upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04.
This is what I see in every browser I open the URL on:
Although GNOME Shell integration extension is running, native host connector is not detected.
How can I fix this?
I was just wondering how to completely disable updates on my Yoga 2 11, which has a corrupted BIOS-- I can't fix broken updates with a reinstall anymore. I was wondering specifically if there was a way to disable the commandsudo apt-get upgrade
and the update manager as well. I don't want my laptop being updated at all, and I know I'll break my system or something if I update! Thanks for any and all input.
I have a Walgreen Infintive USB drive I titled INSTALL, which I use to... install things. I've used it to install multiple Ubuntu flavors, and maybe even Linux Mint?? Anyway, first and foremost-- this isn't an Ubuntu-specific question, but it relates to my using unetbootin to make install drives on Ubuntu 16.04.....
My drive won't boot. When I turn off my Yoga 2 11, and press the BIOS button, then go down to boot manager, the Walgreen infinitive shows up, I select it, and get the typical (installed to my HDD) GRUB menu. I've tried Windows 10, I've tried Ubuntu 16.04..... Linux Mint, LMDE, Ubuntu (whatever flavor), Fedora, Debian, etc. will not boot from my drive.
I have done multiple FULL formats and re-installs with unetbootin (with both Windows and Ubuntu) AND Fedora Media writer(on Windows 10), to no avail. I was wondering if I could have a faulty drive??... The only thing I haven't tried is to boot from my USB on another machine, but I feel like that isn't really necessary, since I've installed Ubuntu many a times with this drive.
Oh one more thing-- the drive has always seemed a bit faulty, like it hasn't always installed all of Ubuntu's little pieces (for example, I can't switch to TTY1/2/3/4/etc this time around for some reason) or something even when it was working. My REAL question, getting to the point, is, CAN I even have a faulty install drive??? Is this my computer??
I keep meaning to try this USB on another computer, but I'm almost positive it's the drive, and just want to be reassured that it's the drive, and the problem can be fixed with a USB drive purchase. Sorry for the essay, I appreciate any input, and sorry to the community if this isn't Ubuntu-specific enough.
so I recently started my computer (probably after a round of sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade
commands and a reboot-- I use apt-get to upgrade irregularly so I'm not sure if I updated last night), and I have two displays. The second display, my 1920x1080p television, does not display in the correct resolution anymore, after this (update?). I have to scale it down to 1366x768 or my dashtodock, and my top GNOME bar on my secondary screen will be cut off from my view. Seeing as how I mainly use my TV for media and game consumption, this really irks me. I don't want to have to wait for another update to watch/play things on my TV at a decent resolution, and there is NO WAY I'm booting into my Windows harddisk. I was wondering if, with my limited knowledge of this issue, and my gnome extensions, there was an easy fix.
P.S. I've rebooted once, didn't help a thing.
^^^^ Will Ubuntu GNOME upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04, or will support discontinue when 18.04 is released?? Just want to know what's better to run right now so I can upgrade and not have to reinstall later(I intend to see this transition through)-- GNOME installed correctly on vanilla Ubuntu, or Ubuntu GNOME?
How can I add a right-click desktop menu entry to create a text file to Gnome 3 in Ubuntu 16.04.02?
Was just wondering if this was an option in GNOME anymore. I know they were taking away settings like crazy there for awhile (hell I even had to use the console to add minimize and maximize buttons back to my desktop-- crazy), and I wouldn't at all be surprised if they got rid of it. I'd appreciate any input, thanks!
I was just wondering how to disable bluetooth startup by default in 17.04. I would like to be able to boot, and not have to turn off bluetooth every time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Both Ubuntu 16.04, and 17.04 have a freezing issue on my Yoga 2 11. It freezes, apparently at random, and forces me to reboot. The clock freezes up- even the seconds. No programs will run. Changing from TTY7 to TTY1/2/3/4/etc doesn't help- it's frozen. Major annoyance, especially if I'm using it to write, or gaming. I can post my logs as soon as it freezes, but I feel that this is a significant enough issue to be looked at. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and like I said, I'll post my logs to Ubuntu pastebin directly after a freeze.
update-- the output of cat /var/log/syslog (directly after a freeze/reboot) has been posted
Update: Output of cat /var/log/syslog on Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.2 LTS https://paste.ubuntu.com/25113438/ Output of sudo lshw http://paste.ubuntu.com/25113449/
my Ubuntu 16.04.2 (on my yoga 2 11) installation keeps freezing, causing me to have to force reboot. This is a persistent issue, and is not caused by any proprietary kernel software being in use. I'm not sure how to look at the logs to see what is causing it, or how to report the bug if it's a bug I'm experiencing, but some guidance would be greatly appreciated. If it helps, I always have my laptop plugged into my tv? (which is how i know the system is freezing copletely- the panel clock stops counting the seconds when it freezes)
I keep trying to install Ubuntu on my Lenovo Yoga 2, however, my wifi card must have some issues running Ubuntu since a new update (?) When I tried installing 16.04, it didn't say anything but wifi just wouldn't connect, and when I tried installing 15.10 it said that my wifi hardware switch was turned off. I really want/need to get out of the Windows trap, I don't have much technical know-how besides basic command line commands, but any help would be much appreciated.
I have a newer, touchscreen laptop/tablet (a 2-in-1? but it doesn't come apart, it folds back and becomes a tablet), and I'd like the fullest support possible for my newer device. When trying to upgrade by computer to Ubuntu Gnome 14.10 from 14.04 recently, I noticed that the release notes state that Utopic is a devolopment release, not intended for use on production machines. However, I've yet to see a way to install either gnome 3.14, or 3.16 on 14.04. However, I can update the Gnome DE to version 3.14 on Utopic. I was wondering if anyone on here could please tell me, exacly how buggy Utopic is. With a name like Utopic Unicorn, one would think that the software is fully mature. Will I likely encounter a lot of bugs? Is it worth updating past the LTS release to get support for my newer device?
I'm trying to install SmoothTasks - it's a KDE taskbar resembling Windows 7. I can't figure how to install it. I know it's an easy question for someone who knows, but it would help me very much to finally understand tarball installation and how to finally pull one through.
I own a Brother Printer/Scanner, model MFC-J270W. I'm running on both a Sony Vaio laptop with ATI graphics and a core i5, and an older Dell desktop with a Core 2 Duo. I had no problems installing it on (K)Ubuntu 11.04, but now on 11.10 I've had horrible trouble installing it in either 64-bit, or 32 bit.
I don't exactly remember what I did last time to install the driver, but I believe I did the same thing I've done this time around. I downloaded the easy copy-to-the-terminal text (which can be found here: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/faq_prn.html#f00090 , made an sh file with the text, and ran it as root. I've had no luck with it so far.
One of my main questions is, when I run the sh file, it asks me if I'm going to enter my device URI. I haven't yet found the URI of the printer, and wouldn't know where to look. So, if anyone can help, I would appreciate either a link to another driver download that will work without too much technological know-how (I can do simple bash commands, but have yet to learn how to install tar.gz app packages) or a different solution to my problem. Thanks :-)
If it matters, I never installed the driver on my Linux partition on the laptop, because only 32-bit support had been released by Brother at the time.
