I could see the button to create a hotspot and share the internet from my Ethernet interface. Ubuntu sets a random password and the machine name as SSID.
In older versions I was able to edit the hotspot connection and change the SSID. I can't see that in 18 and above. Should I really need to go with hostapd-dnsmasq solution to create a hidden hotspot?
Is there any way to do this without hassle?
In my Ubuntu 18 I could see a file /var/backups/alternatives.tar.0. When I opened, I could see paths of many application files. What is the actual purpose of this file?
A simple Google search doesn't seem to show any worthy resuls.
I have installed Ubuntu 18 recently on my AMD Ryzen 5 2400G CPU. We know that Ubuntu automatically locks and turn off the display after a specific time of inactivity. Once my display goes black like this, I am unable to get it back to the normal state. That is, the monitor remains black irrespective of whatever I do. I tried pressing keys, tapping mouse and even disconnected and reconnected the monitor cable. Nothing happens.
I could listen my CPU is working fine from the sound of fan, that is it didn't go to sleep. Each time this happens, I have to do a hard restart to get things working again. This is really annoying. Is this a known bug? I searched the community but couldn't find anything worth noticing.

I am on Ubuntu 16 and I want to change the lock screen background. I don't want by wallpaper to be changed.
I have tried this but it only changes the login screen wallpaper. I want the changes to reflect each time I lock the screen with Home+L. Is this possible?
I was trying to write a shell script to copy files. Here is what I have done.
workingDirectory=$(pwd | sed "s/ /\\ /g")
Now echo $workingDirectory shows /home/user/Documents/Learning and Development/.
But I know, in order for cp command to work I need to replace spaces with \ (backslash+space). So I changed the sed command slightly as,
workingDirectory=$(pwd | sed "s/ /\\\ /g")
So that, echo $workingDirectory shows /home/user/Documents/Learning\ and\ Development/. All good.
But when try to use cp command as,
cp $workingDirectory/jad/jad /usr/bin/
I get errors,
cp: cannot stat ‘/home/user/Documents/Learning\\’: No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat ‘and\\’: No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat ‘Development/jad/jad’: No such file or directory
What could be the reason? How to resolve this?

If I use the first sed command, then the errors are

I did the sed operation to replace white spaces with a \ and a whitespace to make the copying command to work. Then from the Zenity file selection GUI I have chosen a file so that the value inside inputFile is /home/username/Documents/Learning\ and\ Development/testfile.txt.
Now when I try to copy this file to my working directory with
cp $inputFile .
Still it returns the error,
cp: cannot stat ‘/home/user/Documents/Learning\\’: No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat ‘and\\’: No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat ‘Development/WhatsApp.apk’: No such file or directory
Is there any way to bypass this? Actually I am writing a program. So I don't want to tell the users to rename their folder names to avoid spaces.
I have found out this file while learning about Ubuntu file system today under the location /usr/share/applications/.
What actually is the purpose of this file. Googling doesn't pop up anything I was looking for.
I tried du but that doesn't output the empty space of a folder. Any commands to do this?
My office system's HDD capacity was 500 GB, but the usable space was only around 100 GB. When I analysed disk I found that some of the space was used by boot and swap and the rest was used by an empty folder named NewFolder under the root directory. This folder was found to contain around 350 GB and was unusable(no read/write permission) for the user.
When I investigated more, It was found that the ownership of that folder was neither root nor user (May be system admins did it by mistake during installation). So I changed the ownership to my user. And now I am able to access the entire space.
My question is, is it possible for me to mount this partition to my home directory? If possible how? If not possible, why?

I am looking for a script that creates a rotation animation using character /,-, | and \.
If you continuously switch between these characters it should look like its rotating. How to make this?
I was trying to dump my mysql table using the below command
mysqldump --tab=/home/username/Desktop/basic/ --user myusername -p mysql user;
But it returned an error saying
mysqldump: Got error: 1: Can't create/write to file '/home/username/Desktop/basic/user.txt' (Errcode: 13) when executing 'SELECT INTO OUTFILE'
I use Ubuntu 14.04. I have tried to disable apparmor as explained here. But still the error exists. Any other solutions?

It asks for my user password. And when I type just
su
It asks for the root user password. But both the commands directs me to the root terminal. Then why is there such a difference?

I have a shell script. I want to configure my script to run automatically during startup. I know how to do this from GUI. But I wanted to do this from terminal. How can I do this?
On a primary research I found that the file needs to be moved to /etc/int.d/ directory. But this operation needs sudo permission. I wanted to do this without super user permissions.
I also found that there are files under ~/.config/autostart/ which are having some settings regarding the startup applications. But I don't know how to edit them to achieve this.

I am looking to set a proxy for terminal. What I need is I want to send all terminal communications to the internet through a proxy, say tor.
I tried to set a system wide proxy set up. But Terminal doesn't obey the system wide proxy configuration.
Is there any other way to do this?
