For convenience's sake, I would like to set keyboard shortcuts to enable / disable "Automatic Screen Brightness" in the Power settings. Do such commands exist?
First of all, I think it's really cool that Ubuntu 22.04 (I upgraded from 20.04, the last LTS version) now has the ability to switch between different profiles. Depending on what I do, I have times when my machine, calculation-wise is basically in idle, but I would like the screen to not go dim, even when I don't give any input. So accordingly, I've deselected "dim screen" and gone "Blank screen: never". But I've noticed that that behavior is ignored when "Power Saver" is selected. I would like the computer to save power while I am only using the display basically, but the fact that the screen goes dim every other minute and I have to move the mouse is more than a little annoying. I am solving chess puzzles, for anyone wondering :)
Any ideas? Can I modify the behavior of the power saver somewhere?
I am using the Stockfish chess engine within some GUI, but yesterday it stopped working. I hadn't changed the engine, nor the interface, but when I tried to run the engine it "terminated with code...", but it didn't output any code. The only thing that could have changed is that I regularly upgrade my packages:
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade, and I guess that must have broke it.
I installed the latest Stockfish Version and ran it in the command line, and the output it gives is:

I am aware there is a gpodder extension that searches for new podcast on every startup of the program, but since my podcast subscription list is quite long that makes the program a bit cumbersome to use when I just want to add a new podcast URL or check something else.
I would like a command that I can add to the startup applications that launches the gpodder gui, and has it scan for new podcasts.
I am aware of gpo -> update -> download, but I would like to have the graphical interface do that.

I downloaded and google chrome the graphical way in the browser. To keep it updated, I wanted to add the respective repository to my software sources, but it seems that has already been done in the first place. Therefore I want to remove the key and the sources again, so that everything is neatly configured.

I am currently running Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS. Recently, my laptop crashed during a Kernel upgrade (I did it via apt update then apt dist-upgrade). I then ran dpkg --configure -a after it told me that I had broken the automatic update process.
Afterward, I ran apt update && apt dist-upgrade && apt autoremove, which I always do, but I guess for that reason I can't revert back to the older Kernel version.
It ran fine, but since reboot, my Internet doesn't work anymore. It's not the wifi adapter, which is a common issue. Also, LAN doesn't work - the cable is shown as unplugged.
I figured, since updating the system/installing an older Kernel version Etc. is gonna mess up the tweaks I made to my system over time anyway (Is that correct?), I might as well update to Ubuntu 19.10, which I can do directly from 18.04, right? Which should hopefully fix the issue. Do you share my optimism about that helping?
I am at Settings > Bluetooth. I turned Bluetooth on in order to send a file to my phone and my ZTE Axon7 is listed under "Devices" as "Not set up". When I click on it, the rotating orange circle seems to indicate that it's trying something, but it soon returns to "Not set up".

I had entered "scan on", and "discoverable on" beforehand (as outlined in this Ubuntu Forums thread), but it doesn't seem to be necessary. I have also installed the latest version of TLP.
How can I connect my phone to my laptop in order to exchange files?
I used to run Ubuntu 16.10. I had configured foobar2000 the same way via wine that I have now.
I often attach covers to new additions of my music library via foobar:
Back then foobar used to remember the previous directory from which a picture had been selected (so almost always /home/user/Downloads in my case). If some sub-directory no longer existed (because I had deleted it) foobar fell back to the /, My computer, My Documents, Trash menu next time, so I had to click My Computer → /Z: → home → user → Downloads.
However on Ubuntu 18.04 I have to click through all of that each time that I export or attach a cover - no matter what.
Can I somehow get back to the old behavior? Or could I add Downloads to favorites (I can see an empty Favorites Folder in the left corner of foobar's file browser), so I only have to click one thing instead of five each time?
Any other suggestions?
Unfortunately it seems a recent system upgrade broke my graphics card driver, so I am going to hard-reinstall the latest Ubuntu Version (18.04). Before I do that I want to export my gpodder podcast subscriptions. Due to the problem above I can only login via the console (Ctrl+Alt+F...), "and not GUI-wise". What I'm asking for is probably laid out in the official gpodder documentation https://gpodder.github.io/, but because I'm not really literate in this kind of computer stuff, could someone please lay out to me which sequence of commands I have to enter to store those in an OPML (or whichever format is best) file in, say, my home directory?
I just installed VLC 3.0 via snap. Unlike the previous versions nothing shows up now when I click "My Music" or "My Videos". I think it set the wrong base directory. /home/gratis/snap/vlc/158 is where .cache , .config etc. are so I would guess that's currently set to be the home directory. I don't require VLC to move all it's files, I would just like it to locate my stuff, which is /home/gratis/Music ,and /home/gratis/Videos respectively.

I want to record my guitar by connecting the 6.3 output of my amp or pedal to the 3.5 audio (preferably S/PDIF if that's superior) input/output of my LapTop on Ubuntu 17.04. I got the required cable and have tried a couple of things but failed so far.

So I figured I should install "Visual C++ redistributable for Visual Studio 2015" after some internet research. But just downloading it and "running with a wine program loader" does not work. Any ideas?
Since about one week my LapTop on Ubuntu 16.04 crashes at random moments when under high cpu load. That is either during Audio Conversion via TAudioConverter / Wine or Chess Analysis with Stockfish or Komodo in SCIDvsPC, so it is not program-specific.
It immidiately shuts down without any sign of warning.
Where can I find a log file to post, so as to give you more information?

so I have got a couple of SACD rips from my Windows-PC as .dsf files on my Hard-Drive. Now I would like to eventually encode those in opus , to play them on my phone. To be able to do that, I need to first convert them into some lossless audio codec [via PCM?!], preferably flac. Unfortunately the only device available to me now runs on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
So far I tried foobar2000 via Wine, which couldn't even play them.
Unfortunately i was not able to compile dsf2flac either.
Any suggestions?
To give you a little background: I am currently running on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and want to use the application pan newsreader. Unfortunately if I install that via the Ubuntu Software Center, I get pan 0.139-2, which crashes, when I run it.

So I decided to install a development build from source code.
So I went: git clone git://git.gnome.org/pan2
and after some problems I got ./autogen.sh; make to work. I rebooted several times in between these things and now the application seems to be set up properly.
The executable to open should be /pan2/pan/gui/pan.
I tried *rightclick run, but nothing opened. If I enter pan in the terminal, I am told to download pan 0.139-2 (The version that crashes).
Due to lack of understanding basically how a computer works, I then went: cd ~/pan2/pan/gui and then entered ./pan.run, which I read up somewhere on the internet, but it said there was no such file in that directory.
Every advice is greatly appreciated!

For a while I have been using VLC for HEVC / x265 Playback but the problem is that the higher the bitrate is the less fluent the video becomes. This article claims VP9 is far more efficient in encoding and decoding than HEVC on their Windows 7 system.
Do you have any suggestions? How do you play x265 Videos?
