In this interview, Mark Shuttleworth mentions Arkham kernels. I have tried finding these with Google searches, searching launchpad.net, searching ubuntu.com, but I have not been able to find any further information.
Where can I find further information on Arkham, such as how can I install an Arkham kernel?
I would like to install a package from an older ubuntu release into a install of a new ubuntu release, in my case 20.04.
I've added the apt sources list:
deb [trusted=yes] http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise main universe
deb [trusted=yes] http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates main universe
This works, and I can install the package, but I would like to remove the [trusted=yes] and actually verify the packages being downloaded.
Where can I find the gpg public keys for older releases (specifically precise), that I can use with apt-key add?
A bit of background on what I'm trying to do: We are building an Ubuntu image that we deploy to thousands of workstations. We need to have MariaDB available on the workstations, but we only want it started when needed, to not negatively affect the boot time on machines that it is not needed.
So my plan was to do a systemctl disable mariadb.service when we build the image, and then start it via an agent that knows when it is needed. I've checked that systemctl disable mariadb.service removes the .wants symlink:
Removed /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/mariadb.service.
Removed /etc/systemd/system/mysqld.service.
Removed /etc/systemd/system/mysql.service.
And I have confirmed that /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/mariadb.service does not exist in the image.
However when we boot the image, the mariadb.service is enabled, as per the output of systemctl status mariadb and /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/mariadb.service exist. There seems to something that enables it on first boot. I would like to know what does this, so I can disable it from happening.
I've had a look though the files listed in dpkg -L mariadb-server-10.3 mariadb-server-core-10.3 but have not found anything.
I'm having a hard time getting a tmpfiles.d config file to create a directory under /run. If I run systemd-tmpfiles --create the dir gets created, but it's not there after a reboot.
So to try figure out what's going on, I want to turn on debug for when the systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service runs. So I added a drop in file to set the SYSTEMD_LOG_LEVEL environment var on the service. (I see this is recommended by a redhat document)
# /etc/systemd/system/systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service.d/override.conf
[Service]
Environment=SYSTEMD_LOG_LEVEL=debug
Reboot... Nothing in the logs.
If I run it manually, then I get debug output:

But if I run it manually, and pipe the output, I get no debug logs:

It seems that it's maybe detecting if the output is a tty, and turning off the debug logging if it's not a tty.
Any idea how to get debug logs from systemd-tmpfiles when run as a service?

I upgraded to 11.04 using update-manager -d. When I try to boot, I just get a purple blank screen, with no ubuntu logo/dots showing. It never gets to the gdm login screen (I left it for 20min) and I can't get to a tty by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1. I don't see a grub menu/count down screen either.
My computer is a Dell Vostro 1500 with a Nvidia Geforce. I had the proprietary nvidia driver installed before upgrading.
I've boot with a live cd, from where I am writing this, and I can mount the disk, but I don't know where to start looking for the issue.
Is there a way to broadcast a network file sharing server that is using a protocol like ftp, sftp, webdav, so that it shows up in naulilus under network:// .
I once connected to network where I could see a ftp share. It was a red hat machine. I ask the user how he did this, but he did not know.
(Note: I do know how to do this for samba. I'm interested in how you do it for other protocols.)
