I rebooted my machine after and this software was installed. I'm assuming it was from something I've updated, because I haven't installed anything.
Is this part of a new Ubuntu update or something? I'm on Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS.

I'm not sure what's caused it. I haven't changed any system settings. The only thing I've done that may have broken something is updating my software.
My update was:
upgrade linux-generic-hwe-20.04:amd64 5.8.0.48.54~20.04.32 5.8.0.49.55~20.04.33

upgrade nomachine:amd64 7.3.2-3 7.4.1-3```
Removing nomachine did not solve the problem.
It was far worse before, I'm not sure how to describe exactly, but my entire screen's UI was glitching out. So I rebooted and that stopped, but now the terminal text looks like this:
I haven't changed any terminal settings. This seems to be occurring in the entire OS. Here is another example:
Not sure how to go about troubleshooting this? I don't have the time to reinstall the OS, nor do I think I should have to because this is just ridiculous and shouldn't happen. I'm not aware of anything I've done to make the system unstable.
Earlier I also tried booting the PC. It failed and got stuck on some command in a terminal (didn't manage to take a photo of what it said).
So I rebooted into recovery mode with both available kernels. I was getting strange glitches like this:
That didn't work. So I rebooted the PC normally, and now I somehow logged in fine. Now I'm getting popups saying to report a system error. It says this:
sudo lshw -class display

I also did MemTest86, which passed with 0 errors.
Let me know if more details are required.
I use keyboard short.cuts to control apps that use the media controls.
But frequently after opening/closing apps that use media controls, the keyboard shortcuts stop working (even though they did previously). I can control it using the UI media controls in the notifications centre even if the keyboard shortcuts don't work, so something must be broken here.
The only thing that's been able to fix this is rebooting, which I shouldn't have to do (nor should I have to run some command to restart the media service or whatever).
I'm using an EPSON printer connected via USB. It's setting up successfully, accepting jobs, and instantly marking jobs as completed. But the printer isn't printing them (or showing any indication of receiving a job).
I've tried the following things:
I've also tried the other DebuggingPrintingProblems wiki troubleshooting steps, but can't because I don't know how to retrieve the ID of the printer's queue.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I've edited /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop
in the past to use firejail
when running firefox
, but it seems like this was removed during an update.
How can I permanently open browsers in Firefox without needing to update .desktop files whenever they're updated?
.desktop
files in ~/.local/share/applications
These files still exist, they're unchanged from when I created them months ago. The system just isn't picking them up for some reason, and seems to be prioritising the ones in /usr/share/applications
instead.
Some of this is redacted due to extraneous content (language specs, etc).

I just added firejail
to the front of the Exec
command in each .desktop
file. These commands work fine when manually executed in the terminal.
I think this may have started happening after I updated from Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS to Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS. I'm not sure, though.
I haven't changed anything besides updating system packages with apt
. I'm not aware of anything that could've caused this problem.
I know when it's working, because when it is, I can only access the ~/Downloads
folder when uploading files in the browser. And if I'm running it from the command line, I'll get output from firejail.
I've installed Joplin via an AppImage. When I click the app in the dash, it takes two clicks for it to open. Once it's opened, if I close it and reopen it, it only takes one click.
I'm not sure why it's doing this. I suspect it's because I used appimaged to install it, which may not be initialising until the app is clicked once. And then on the second click, the app actually launches.
How am I supposed to debug this? appimaged is installed, so I don't know what's causing the problem.
Ever since upgrading to a 1440p 144hz monitor, Ubuntu has been displaying strange graphical distortions. This is one example:
This doesn't happen on Windows, therefore I think this is an OS-specific or software problem and not a hardware defect. It also didn't happen with my old 1080p monitor, and I haven't changed any settings since changing monitors (besides upping the refresh rate).
I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting this, so any help is appreciated.
Note: I had to take a photo with my phone because screenshotting it didn't capture the distortions.
This also seems to happen spontaneously. Sometimes it works fine, other times the graphical distortions appear. I haven't been changing any settings, so I don't know why it randomly occurs some times and not others.

I've installed TorGuard's VPN software for Ubuntu.
I tried activating one of their settings that minimises the program to the top bar. But this has prevented me from being able to open the application and view the window for it:
It's supposed to minimise the window to the top bar, but it's not showing there:
And I know the app is running because it's showing as a process in the system monitor.
So now I can't use the app. I tried reinstalling it, but that didn't work. Therefore the settings must be stored somewhere, so if I delete that file it should reset it.
How can I find the settings for it?
I've been using this distro for about 8 months now. It used to work fine, however, for the past ~3 months it's begun randomly crashing. It usually happens between 2-4 times a day and it's becoming worse.
I need to fix it, however, I'm completely lost as to how to go about troubleshooting it—especially since when it happens my OS is basically unusable.
I suspect it's due to a memory leak, although I have 8GB of ram (which is a fair amount) and that's always worked fine on other OS like Windows. As for any other specs, I have a decent PC (including an Intel Core i5-4670K and Radeon R9280X).
I'm not running any intensive applications, either, and even if I was I'd expect a functional PC. I primarily use my PC for web development, so I typically only use a few lightweight apps (like Atom, a few terminal windows/processes, Firefox or Chrome, and Spotify).
It just happened before whilst only having Spotify and the latest Firefox open (which is very performant, and I only had a few tabs open), so I suspect it's due to something deeper in the OS.
What could the issue be, and what should I do from here to troubleshoot and solve it?
Is it possible to place the background applications menu somewhere else? I'd prefer if it wasn't in the way of the desktop, but still easily accessible elsewhere. If not, is there at least a way to hide it?
As you can see, when it's closed it still protrudes onto the desktop in the bottom-left:
I've looked in the system settings, as well as GNOME Tweak Tool, but I can't find any settings for it. I also haven't found any GNOME extensions to solve the problem.
I'm using VyprVPN's CLI, connected to a server overseas. But my DNS is leaking (I used this site to check).
I've found several answers for this question, but there were all for the manual configuration of OpenVPN—not using VyprVPN's CLI.
I've tried to figure it out but I'm not sure how the CLI works, or even where to find the configuration files for it. I've contacted customer support, too, but they wouldn't offer any help other than linking me to where I can download their .ovpn
configuration files.
How can I configure my VPN / network connection to stop leaking my DNS?
OS: Ubuntu 17.04
I'm currently setting up fan controls on my PC. When I run pwmconfig
it says that I have no working fan sensors:
de@dust ~ $ sudo pwmconfig
# pwmconfig revision 6166 (2013-05-01)
This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.
We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed
after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you
physically verify that the fans have been to full speed
after the program has completed.
Found the following devices:
hwmon0 is acpitz
hwmon1 is radeon
hwmon2 is coretemp
hwmon3 is asus
Found the following PWM controls:
hwmon1/pwm1 current value: 71
hwmon1/pwm1 is currently setup for automatic speed control.
In general, automatic mode is preferred over manual mode, as
it is more efficient and it reacts faster. Are you sure that
you want to setup this output for manual control? (n) Y
Giving the fans some time to reach full speed...
Found the following fan sensors:
hwmon3/fan1_input current speed: 0 ... skipping!
There are no working fan sensors, all readings are 0.
Make sure you have a 3-wire fan connected.
You may also need to increase the fan divisors.
See doc/fan-divisors for more information.
I'm not sure why it thinks I have no working fan sensors, seeing as I have no problem using a fan controller in Windows..?
Yesterday I moved to the proprietary drivers
from the X.org drivers
using the Additional Drivers
application, and reverted back to the X.Org AMD/ATI drivers
on my machine.
I've just booted my machine now after yesterday, and my multi-monitor setup is not working. I can't change the multi-monitor settings in the Screen Display
section of the system settings.
I checked my graphics drivers and noticed this:
It will not let me revert back to my old settings, and I'm not sure why. I want to be able to have the option to choose any of the drivers, and I also want the X.Org drivers to be used.
How can I fix this?
I've bought a 4K video which I want to play.
I tried playing it on both the default 'Videos' application, and VLC player. Both were incredibly choppy and had graphical issues such as this:
Why isn't this working, am I missing something? I have a decent GPU (MSI Radeon R9 280X) so I expect to be able to play a video perfectly fine.
I am using nitrogen to span my wallpaper over dual monitors. When I boot, however, I have to manually open nitrogen to change my wallpaper again.
How can I add this as a startup application and automatically set my wallpaper?
This has happened a few times over the past few days, however, I have no idea what to troubleshoot or how to fix it.
Ubuntu will randomly crash into a 'static' screen, I took a picture on my phone, it looks like this:
I usually don't receive any error prompts after rebooting, either, other than a prompt advising me to report the error without listing details. How can I fix this?
Edit:
I received this error log when I booted my PC this morning. Seeing as this a graphical glitch for my open-source X.Org AMD driver, I thought that it may also be the cause for the crashing too:
Here's my PC specs: (this should help solve the problem)
I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, but I can't update Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I also have this error showing up: (it's transparent because I screenshotted just before the drop-down closed)

I have no clue why this is happening. How can I fix it?
EDIT: It looks like I can't access my HDD either with this error Not authorized to perform operation
. Ubuntu is installed on my SSD, so it shouldn't affect it; but it could help diagnose the problem.
I just installed the Arc Theme, however it doesn't look right. As you can see here, mine looks completely different and looks like it's missing textures and other things:
Whereas the normal theme looks like this:
My icons aren't changing either.
I'm activating it from the Unity Tweak Tool, and I don't know why this is happening.
I've never used Linux before until I installed Ubuntu yesterday. I want to install Gnome3, and I've tried plenty of tutorials over the internet but nothing has worked. Whenever I attempt to do sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop
