Edit to clarify that this is different to other questions where upgrade is prevented by lack of space on /boot. I don't have lots of old kernels I can remove. I have only one and I can't remove that!

So I'm trying to update from Ubuntu 19.10 to 20.04. I've got full disk encryption so I have to enter a password before boot up. On the cli when I try to

sudo do-release-upgrade

The process aborts with

"The upgrade has aborted. The upgrade needs a total of 212 M free space on disk '/boot'. Please free at least an additional 102 M of disk space on '/boot'. You can remove old kernels using 'sudo apt autoremove' and you could also set COMPRESS=xz in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf to reduce the size of your initramfs. "

I've done the autoremove but in any case I've only got one kernel: 

$ dpkg --list | grep linux-image

Editing initramfs.conf to COMPRESS=xz also did not allow the upgrade.

Other than risking partition editing to increase in the size of the boot partition, is there anything I can safely delete from /boot to get the upgrade processed?

I recently updated from Ubuntu 18.04 to 19.10. It looks to me as if the update installed an older kernel (5.3.0-29) than the one I had running under 18.04 (5.0.0-36). Since then I've had errors on all apt updates which show initramfs failing: 

Setting up initramfs-tools (0.133ubuntu10) ...

My output of uname -r is

Tried asking this on ubuntuforums but nothing forthcoming there. Here's my issue:

Hello I wonder if someone can help me with this. I have searched but yet to find an answer that works.

Ubuntu 14.04 fresh install on a custom built PC using a Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 motherboard. The BIOS was updated to the latest version using Q-flash and I chose to load the defaults (where it said everything would work).

USB 3.0 ports work, USB 2.0 ports do not and there are 8 xUSD 2.0 ports and 3x USB 3.0 ports. Physically for example I plug in the USB mouse I am using into a USB 2.0 port, the laser light flashes, then goes off. The mouse fails to work, as does any other USB device plugged into the USB 2.0 ports.
