My Ubuntu 20.04 started writing in capitals. Capslock changes a language.
In Settings -> Keyboard, I do not have this set. The language change is set to Super + space, however when I go to Languages -> Installed inputs I see capslock listed as one of the language switching keys.
How can I get rid of this?
I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 20.04. Lenovo ThinkPad T540 (tech spec), graphics card Intel HD Graphics 4600 in processor.
The upgrade did not go well - the display got stuck for too long (hours), so I rebooted. The upgrade was incomplete and I had to reconfigure all packages, after which it booted again.
However, there is one big annoyance: Across all desktop, I keep seeing visual artifacts, flickering 1px lines or 1px rectangles, which sometimes seem to match some panes of the windows in the background.
For instance, if I have Oracle VirtualBox manager window open in the background, and Firefox in the front, then I keep seeing the frames of VirtualBox's UI elements on Firefox'es window.
Is there something I can try to get rid of this? Assuming it may have something to do with the failed upgrade, should I re-install / re-configure something?
I want to install PostgreSQL 9.5. But the available version is 9.6.
I only need 9.5 to build wal2json against it and test it (requirement because of AWS version).
I have the default looks, at least brought forward from around Ubuntu 16.10. Now I have Ubuntu 18.04 and have a few little discomforts:
It's hard to tell which window is active - light gray vs. less light gray window name is clearly not enough to distinguish quickly.
Some programs paint black items in selection boxes, which are almost black in Ubuntu's Ambiance. For instance, Inkscape's selection of stroke style. And in general, I want to invert the selection box everywhere.
Tabs - again, it's hard to see which one is active. I'd like the active to be much more constrasted.
I have looked at few other questions like this but the answers either apply to Unity, or are obsolete...

I have upgraded from Ubuntu +17.10 to 18.04.
After that, Gnome wouldn't start - I got a login loop, until I deleted ~/.config/dconf/user. That way I lost all configuration but I have set it back.
However, I can't get the antialiasing to work. I have tried all 3 options in Gnome Tweaks, but I can still see that some fonts are rendered weirdly - with some kind of colorful halo around them. It only seems to happen in some programs, e.g. Intellij IDEA which I think uses GTK through Java, but not sure at all.
Is there some secondary options I have to set? I remember some settings are duplicated between Gnome and KDE. There are Wayland and X. As per this article, I had X but now I should have Wayland. How do I know which one I have? Could switching to the other help (or break more things? :) )
Due to a bug/glitch, I can't use GNOME Flashback for a while. I am forced to use the new GNOME Shell layout. I'm finding it a large leap back in usability. I am not able to customize it the way I can with Flashback. It tries to pretend I am on a tablet. But that's a different story.
I have 2 versions of IntelliJ IDEA installed. When I find "idea" in the screen under Windows key ("Activities" overview), only the older version is found. I can add that through context menu. However, I haven't found a way to add the newer one. Or change the old one's path. I have tried various combinations of Alt, Shift, Ctrl and Super with both mouse buttons, but none gave me the "edit" menu item to change what the icon launches.
How can I add a custom command, or how can I change the path of an existing one?
I have 17.10, been using gnome-flashback for quite a long time, since 16.04 and kept upgrading.
After installing latest updates, I can't make gnome-flashback to appear. In the login screen, I can choose Gnome Flashback - Metacity or Gnome Flashback - Compiz, but both, when chosen, end up displaying the new layout with "Activities" and the large icons panel on the left.
I have tried reinstalling gnome-flashback using
sudo apt-cache depends gnome-flashback | \
grep '[ |]Depends: [^<]' | cut -d: -f2 | tr -d ' ' | \
xargs sudo apt-get --reinstall install -y
which finished, but after restart, I still end up in that weird layout.
Also, when I lock the screen, it behaves like something was pressing enter every ~500ms, so it's not possible to enter the password.
What happened? Is that a bug? Is Gnome Flashback supposed to work? What should I try to get it back? Thanks!
Update: After reinstallation of gnome-flashback, some GTK apps wouldn't start, e.g. Synaptic said:
$ sudo synaptic

I was able to solve it as per this. I think I had this issue after upgrading to 17.10. Not sure if it is related to my issue above.
I ham troubleshooting some Bluetooth issues and spotted this
in /etc/bluetooth/main.conf:

I have a CEL-TEC F5A headset. The spec says:
Bluetooth 4.0, profiles: Headset, Hands free, A2DP, AVRCP/HSP/HFP
It plays nicely with High Fidelity Playback (A2DP sink) profile.
When I want to switch audio input to the headset's microphone, the output profile automatically changes to Headset Head Unit (HFS/HFP) and the quality is terrible - like 8bit sound or something. When I switch it back to A2DP, the input is back to desktop mic.
I've read few of other questions and seems A2DP is expected not to support input, right? But the HFP part in HFS/HFP is High Fidelity Playback I guess? That sounds like it could work as a headset and still not sound like 1950's phone.
How could I simplify switching between the profiles so that it is HFS/HFP when I talk and A2DP when I listen? E.g. as a push-to-talk.

The problem here is not that the microphone does not work, but rather that the audio quality worsens when it is activated.
I have installed Ubuntu 17.04.
In the installer, I connected to a wifi, but the installation process could not connect, saying DNSSEC validation failed.
The same situation was in the installed system.
I found an article recommending to turn of DNSSEC: sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf and add DNSSEC=off.
I understand the value of DNSSEC, but why it's not working in Ubuntu right away? Even the Ubuntu servers couldn't be contacted by the installer, which, to me, seems like a blocker for releasing the version.
So I assume this is triggered by my local conditions? How? How can I make DNSSEC work? The article recommended getting rid of systemd-resolved and installing Unbound.
I've upgraded Ubuntu 16.04 with Gnome Flashback to 16.10 and then to 17.04.
After that, switching keyboard layout was set to Alt+Shift, but didn't work. What works is the default Super + Space.
When I want to change in the new UI for keyboard shortcuts, I can't - it doesn't register this shortcut. It seems the shortcuts need to contain some character.
I have tried this solution but it doesn't work either. As a stopgap I am using ['<Shift><Alt>X'].
PS: I wonder why do things that work need to be constantly changed. Does every new version need a new way of configuring the system? And why Alt+Shift, which worked on every system I have ever seen since Windows 3.11 in 90's, need to change now? ...

That's quite dangerous because remove is much harder to mistype than a simple dash from a failed autocompletion.
Is that an equivalent of apt-get remove? I couldn't find any documentation for that. Edit: except for overlooking the man page...
I have installed Ubuntu 16.10 + Gnome Flashback. Previously I had Ubuntu 14.04 which I managed to break completely by upgrade halted in the middle.
I've backed up all files from $HOME and /etc and few other, using bootable Ubuntu DVD. After installation, I've copied all files from former $HOME to the new one. It had owner/group root/root. I've done chown -R ondra ~/.* and chgrp -R ondra ~/.*.
However, I still observe quite weird behavior on different levels. Many settings don't get saved. For instance, keyboard switching shortcut, screens layout, Konsole profile. Sometimes, wakeup doesn't work, computer stays blank and I have to shut down by holding power off; not sure if that's related.
I started to suspect that I have the access rights wrong. Maybe somewhere the apps use other user to store the config?
Should the config files have 777 or 555 or 550 or 750 or...?
Are the aforementioned settings stored also in /etc/*?
How can I check where the apps attempt to write but fail because of lack of write access?

I got to a state when upgrade is not possible - old system (10.10, packages index too broken) I dediced to reinstall.
Now I'd like to keep my /home. Ideally, I'd like to burn a CD or ISO to USB and click Next, Next, Next.
How should I proceed?
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome classic. Pidgin's tray icon doesn't show up. The settings is ok ("Always").
For any case, I've also added it in dconf-editor as per How to enable notification area (systray) for Pidgin although that's probably only for unity.
Also I've reinstalled and restarted Pidgin. But still no success - no trayicon anywhere.
I wanted to check whether I have the taskbar in the UI, but I have no idea how to set up panels in Gnome classic. Right-click on panel doesn't work.
Any ideas?
Sometimes I'd like to know what version of certain apps was in various releases, or what ver is planned to be in the upcoming one.
Is there some such database?
I'd like to install Ubuntu on a disk which is connected (but not mounted), without booting from a DVD or USB. The goal is to have Ubuntu installed on an external disk, unplug it, plug it to other computer and run.
I know it takes 20 minutes etc etc. I simply want to do it from a running system, without need to reboot that.
What are my options?

I've attached a SSD disk though USB. Then:

mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/hx # It's FAT32 now, but was the same with EXT4
The last command changes dir owner to root. Whenever I create a file in the root dir, I need to be root and root is the owner.
Can I set different user as owner of the mounted dir? Or, simply said, ensure that user XY can freely read/write on the drive.
When I send a mail, it takes several minutes (~20) to finish this task. I can see a status bar item, percents increasing. I wouldn't mind much; the problem is that until it's done, I can't see the mail in the Sent folder and can't work with it.
This behavior started without any reconfiguration. Other users of the same mail server do not experience this trouble.
How can I fix this?

Update: I found out that the messages are actually staying in Outbox and not outgoing at all if one particular SMTP server is used. When I tried to "Flush" the Outbox, it shown "Sending...", but nothing changed nor was sent. When I try to "expunge" outbox, Evolution says:
MBOX file corrupted, expected From: but didn't find.

Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync
Any idea how to fix this? Preferably without need to drop & set up everything anew.
And where does Evolution store it's .mbox files? ~/.evolution does not exist.
~/.gconf/apps/evolution/ only contains configuration.
