I want to buy an external ssd for photo and files storage. I see interesting offers, but most external ssd's with good reviews are encrypted. As I understand, encryption software works on Mac and Windows.
I was wondering if such hard drives can be used under Ubuntu? I don't really care about encryption, since I want to use the drive for storage and everything should be accessible right away.
If I buy an encrypted SSD, can I format it in ubuntu and turn it into a regular hard drive?
I have this issue with my Dell Latitude 7490 laptop a few days after I got it from work. I use a USB-c docking station at work and it may be the source of the problem.
The symptoms are the following:
if the laptop is put to sleep while connected to the docking station (with a second monitor connected), and the system resumes after I disconnect the docking station the screen remains blank. The only option is to hard reboot...
in general, if I put the laptop to sleep closing the lid the same thing happens (rather randomly). If I put the laptop to sleep using the Power button and clicking suspend, the system resumes fine.
This issue is rather annoying, since I always put to sleep my older laptops by closing the lid. I feel that this might be related to the docking station, since I noticed the first point above rather recently.
Do you have any ideas on how to solve this issue? How does Ubuntu keep track to see if the laptop is connected to the docking station or not?
Ever since I changed to Xubuntu 16.04 there is an annoying behavior when suspending my laptop: it seems like there's a delay so that the network manager can turn off. This causes long suspend and resume time. The new times are 10-15 seconds which are way longer than what I had before...
Anyway, it seems like systemd-inhibit may be responsible for this. The command systemd-inhibit lists the delay before sleep since NetworkManager needs to turn off networks. There's also another inhibitor which blocks completely xfce4 power management.
How can I get rid of the systemd inhibitors? It is possible to disable them somehow?
I decided to upgrade my 14.04 system to the new LTS stuff. One of the problems I encountered is the following
I set up the laptop to suspend when I close the lid. When I close the lid it takes about 15 seconds to suspend (vs 2 before). When I open the lid the computer resumes but the network is off for about 10 seconds.
I'm not sure if somebody else has the same problem. It's a fresh install. How can I make the laptop suspend and resume faster?
I used to work on a 720p laptop screen, and now I have a new 1080p laptop screen with the same 15.6" size. With this higher resolution, everything is too small, and my eyes get tired faster. Is it possible to scale everything to 720p but keep the resolution 1080p?
I tried using Accessibility, but that doesn't scale everything.
Since I updated to Ubuntu 14.04 when trying to print something, the printer dialog shows all network printers. The list is very long, since I am on a University network. How can I make the printing dialog show only the printers I installed?
The command uname -r gives 3.5.0-17-generic, but when I checked in synaptics the kernel 3.5.0-43 is installed, but it seems the system uses the old kernel instead.
How can I make it use the new kernel?
How can I make the low battery message appear on top of all running windows?
For example it happened that I watched a movie and the computer suspended because the battery was low, but the warning messages were not visible while watching the movie.
I recently installed Ubuntu 12.10 by keeping the home folders from Linux Mint 13 distribution. The system installed fine, but at the beginning everything was in Chinese (even the text in the Terminal). I managed to solve that by editing some files, but I still get an error whenever a command is not found in Terminal. Here it is:

How can I get rid of this error. It says that it is a locale error, so I guess it might be related to the initial language problem, but I'm not an expert in linux stuff. What is your opinion?
Is it possible to use Windows touchpad driver in Ubuntu? I have a Dell n5110 and the touchpad is not recognized. I cannot use scroll, and most annoying, while typing the pointer usually jumps if the touchpad is touched. I see that there are lots of questions here and on the internet about this issue. Some claim to work, but I tried everything with no results.
I am thinking of buying a new laptop, and need Ubuntu as my OS. Is it true that the latest Intel i3, i5, i7 CPUs work properly immediately after install, or do I need to install some additional software/drivers for them to work?
I'm just curious if it is that simple, and I didn't find this answer searching the internet.
