It appears OK in the browser. I can open it with GIMP. But if I open the directory where it's in with the file Manager (stock Gnome in Ubuntu 22.04) it can't display the thumbnail. If I set it as a desktop background I get a black screen. If I open it with the image viewer (eog) I get this:
Clearly, there's some bug in the desktop environment's image handling. Faulty library?
This is Ubuntu 22.04, x86_64. Any download I make from either browser just isn't done, and silently. It just proceeds, does not show me any error message, and no file appears. When the selected folder is the default Downloads folder (I configured both browsers to ask), the download happens normally. Smells like a security thing, but there's no user feedback.
In Firefox, I tried setting browser.download.improvements_to_download_panel in about:config to False. No effect.
I was about to send a message through WhatsApp Web in Firefox, and I wanted to illustrate it with a Saluting Face emoji - ?. To my disappointment, this showed as a hex box. It's too recent. I looked around and ended up installing a newer version of fonts-noto-color-emoji. It works wonderfully, the newer emojis show OK.
My question is, is there a PPA for newer versions of this package so I wouldn't have to dpkg -i it manually every now and then?
I use a certain piece of sofware (Asterisk) which includes in its source tree a nifty little script to automatically download and install all packages it needs from your distro's repositories, including of course Ubuntu. One of these prerequisites (libvpb1) requires a piece of information (the default country phone prefix), so the script becomes not so automatic:
It's innocuous to have this library installed in a system that doesn't run telephony stuff, so you can test it yourself.
My question is: How do I feed the answer non-interactively beforehand so apt-get install (or, rather, dpkg -i) grabs that and uses it as if it had been typed in that ncurses screen?
A generic solution would be better, like, how do I know if any package requires information like this, and how do I set it from a script?
I installed Ubuntu MATE 18.04 and the installation went OK. It's an LNV laptop, with UEFI and all that Secure Boot nonsense. It was perfectly possible to install Linux besides Windows before; but after it came from repair it seems the UEFI boot ignores Linux. There's a BIOS screen with UEFI priorities, I put "ubuntu" in front but at boot it ignores that and boots Windows no matter what.
Is this something that can be fixed it by fudging files in the UEFI partition?
Everything worked flawlessly until after an update. Now, when booting in graphical mode I get a black screen with an immovable mouse cursor in the middle. No response, Caps Lock doesn't affect LEDs, no Ctr-Alt-anything.
If I change to text mode, I don't get all virtual text terminals, only one, and it doesn't get focus by default. I can go to it with Alt-F1 and am able to log in. If i run startx it draws the top and down MATE panels and then freezes again in the same way. Only a power button poweroff gets me out.

I want to make a kiosk-type setup that simply plays back video from a remote UDP source. The command line below does the trick and shows the video OK when there's an incoming signal to begin with. I set it up to execute as a startup app of a desktop user with auto-login:
vlc -f udp://@:PortNumber
But if there's no video when the machine starts, it shows the VLC screen with its window decorations and dashboard. Worse, it shows the Unity taskbar. I would like it to always show a black screen (or as close to featureless as possible), and I need the black screen to remain when there's no signal coming, and the video to come up when the signal comes back.
I'm kind of lost in VLC's infinitely many command-line options. Any help would be highly appreciated. I'm open to using a different video player if it will do the job better.
My PC has a 3.5" floppy drive and yes, I do use it. (Retrocomputing hobby.) I use Ubuntu 12.10 with MATE. At every login, the floppy drive lights up and I get the following message box:
The title translates to: It wasn't possible to mount Diskette Disk
Fun fact: If I rmmod floppy and then modprobe floppy while logged in, the same message box appears again.
Also, if I eventually access a floppy disk, the motor won't stop spinning. If I do a mdir of it, after it returns, the motor stops, and then starts again. I suspect there's some process in MATE doing this. My /etc/fstab has nothing related to any removable media, just the root and swap partition.
How do I make MATE stop trying to access the floppy? I repeat, I don't want to disable the floppy. This behavior doesn't happen under CentOS 6 and GNOME 2.x.
First, I'd like for the various special devices for different floppy capacities (like /dev/fd0u720 etc.) to be available. I tried to adapt some udev rules I found online. I tried this, which I saved as /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-floppy.rules:

I'd like to simplify my GRUB menu so it has only the installed OS's list. (In my case, the Windows that came with the machine, Ubuntu 12.10, and CentOS 6.) I see no options in /etc/default/grub that disable this. I thought it was GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY but that's not it.
Is there a "clean" way to do this?
The energy options screen, oddly, doesn't have an option for what to do when the power button is pressed!
