On a German keyboard layout I just need to press Alt Gr+m to get a 'µ' (micro) symbol.
How to do so on a English (US) keyboard?
Well this will be a very simple question.
I just bought an English-Keyboard with qwerty layout because I love the English layout much more than the German one. I am using Ubuntu 18.04.
The numpad on my new keyboard has labeled the dot .
. Nevertheless I get alway a comma ,
.
The keyboard has a UK-Layout. The 'Region & Language' settings look like this:
I expected to get a dot and wonder if this is normal?
Which character is used for the numpad dot-key by default?
Virtual Box had been already installed by:
sudo apt install virtualbox
Then I went on installing the extension pack:
sudo apt install virtualbox-ext-pack
This runs into the error:

How to install Virtual Box's Extension Pack via default repository in Ubuntu 17.10?
I just noticed that the directory /usr/share/virtualbox-ext-pack
is empty. On a reference system the folder contains the *.vbox-extpack
file. Maybe this is a proxy problem here?
I am starting the ubuntu start up disk creator (usb-creator-gtk) on Ubuntu 17.10 (4.13.0-37-generic) and getting this dialog:
I already reinstalled it by:
sudo apt remove usb-creator-gtk
sudo apt autoremove
sudo apt install usb-creator-gtk
And I checked its installation path:
whereis usb-creator-gtk
usb-creator-gtk: /usr/bin/usb-creator-gtk /usr/share/man/man8/usb-creator-gtk.8.gz
And I tried to start it directly with:
/usr/bin/usb-creator-gtk
And i did a hexdump which showes there is no 0xd9
at position two. There is an 0x21
:
hd -n 32 /usr/bin/usb-creator-gtk

But still the same issue.
How to fix Startup Disk Creator which ends in an exception?
I found multiple answers on askUbuntu about this topic. But none of them suites to Ubuntu 17.10. So I need to ask again:
How do I set focus follows mouse in Ubuntu 17.10?
Initial situation:

What I need to do:
I would like to create a zip containing d0, d1 and d4 which must have the fallowing structure:

Question How to create a zip with multiple files without the sub-folders?
I am using Ubuntu's Archive Manager (file-roller) to compress (tar.gz) some large files and directories.
Often this takes a long time, because this program uses just one of my eight CPU cores.
Is there a way to force Archive Manager to use all my CPU cores?
I would like to install the System load Indicator to my Ubuntu 16.10 System.
I know this can be done by using sudo apt install indicator-multiload
.
But I treid to use the Ubuntu Software wizzard. But I am not able to find this System load Indicator. I used different search phrases like 'indicator', 'load' or 'system'. But the System load Indicator cannot be found.
How to use the Ubuntu Software wizzard to install the Ubuntu Software wizzard in Ubuntu 16.10?
Hello I tried to rip some Audio CDs into the lossless flac format.
Flac has different compression rates and multiple arguments which can be passed. Normally I like to use flac
with the argument -V8
which means, that the ripped content is validated and that the highest compression rate is used. Remember: Flac is lossless. So the compression rate influences not the quality. It influences just the processing time and the file size.
I used Rhythmbox and RipperX to rip my Audio CDs.
Well, Rhythmbox can identify the Audio CD and shows the interprets name and all track titles automatically. But it is not possible to edit the ripping format options. It is not possible to adjust the compression level. It uses the default compression level of 5 instead.
So I tried RipperX. In the options menu I can add additional arguments, which are used, when flac
is called. This good, so I can adjust the compression level. Well, but RipperX cannot identify the Audio CD. It does not show the interprets name and all track titles.
I'm searching for a way to rip my Audio CDs into flac format with the highest compression level and the correct interprets name and all track titles. Of course I could use Rhythmbox to rip my Audio CDs into wave and then use flac
to convert into flac and then delete the old wave files, but I am searching for a way to do both steps at once.
Does anybody know a way to rip an audio CD into flac without my issues?
I am searching for a way to find out which targets are supported by a specific ppa.
Simplified Example
I need to install the seafile client on a arm target. So I added its ppa, updated and tried to install it:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:seafile/seafile-client
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install seafile-gui
Well, then I get the error: Unable to locate package
How I tried to see supported targets:
Someone told me, that arm is not supported by this ppa. How can I know about this?
I tried taking a look to launchpad, where I found a hint, that i286 and amd64 are supported only:
I entered the URL, which is shown during apt-get update into my browser: http://ppa.launchpad.net/seafile/seafile-client/ubuntu/
. Navigating through the different folders, I found an armhf amd an arm64 folder next to the amd64 and the i386 folder here:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/seafile/seafile-client/ubuntu/dists/vivid/main/binary-armhf/
http://ppa.launchpad.net/seafile/seafile-client/ubuntu/dists/vivid/main/binary-arm64/
All folders are filled with similar files. So is the arm target nevertheless supported?
Question
How do I find out which targets are supported by a ppa?
Problem:
I try to explain the problem I am having with Eclipse: Well, as shown in my attached screenshot all Icons seems to be enabled. But normally some Icons are disabled. For Example: When the Debugger is in running, you cannot press the resume button, but the resume button and the Stop button appear like an enabled button. Nevertheless just one of them is clickable.
So in summary eclipses logic behind the Icons is working, but eclipse does not change the visual style of a button, when it is disabled (not clickable).
Question:
Does anybody know how to force eclipse to show an disabled icon, when the button is disabled and an enabled icon, when the button is enabled?
Further information:
What I have already tried to do:
I tried using Eclipse Mars. But is has the same behavior than Neon.
I tried using Eclipse Luna. This works pretty fine. All siabled buttons are grayed out.
I reported this bug to eclipse: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=501878
I have a Nexus 4 with Ubuntu Touch. It is now updated to OTA12.
I wonder, because if I connect the device via a Slimportad adapter to my external screen, it does not switch into convergence mode. The screen of the Nexus 4 can be used as keyboard and mouse touch pad. And at the big screen I can see the mousepointer and the normal screen layout as I am used to see on the screen of my Nexus 4.
I remember at OTA10, Ubuntu Touch switched on the desktop mode automatically, if conected to an external screen. In desktop mode I should see normally windows with titlebar and all all apps are running at the same time.
I know some Aquaris devices do have an build in switch at the System-Notification-Tab. But at the Nexus 4 there is not such a switch.
I even did a full reset of Ubuntu Touch. But this did not solve the problem.
How do I switch into desktop mode?
I'm running Ubuntu Touch at the channel 'ubuntu-touch/rc-proposed/bq-aquaris.en'.
My current version is r272.
I would really like to know what had been changed since version r271. I already searched on launchpad, but I cannot find the related content.
Where can I find out the change log (or commit log)?
I just read here that there is security bug in glibc and that it is already fixed.
I found out, that the actual installed version of glibc can be shown by ldd --version
. My systems runs version 2.19.
So I want now to upgrade it but I don't know how to do so. (I don't want to upgrade the whole system). I tried to find out which package contains glibc with apt-cache search glibc
. But there are hundred of packages...
So does anybody know how to find out the package which I need to upgrade to get the new version of glibc?
I am using the Nexus 4 with UbuntuTouch installed.
I switched to a writable filesystem by this command:
sudo mount -o remount,rw /
and it worked perfectly.
How to switch back correctly to read-only filesystem?
I installed TexStudio with this command:
sudo apt-get install texstudio
Now I need to install some packages like amsmath
and amsfonts
.
I typed in:
sudo apt-get install texlive-<\t>
but I get hundred of proposals, I don't know which one to install to get the required packages.
How can I find out which texlive-...
-component to install via apt-get
to get the required packages?
I have found a bug at my UbuntuTouch phone but I dont know where so submit...
Of course I searched on launchpad, but I cannot find the right place where to put the bug report. Here is my bug description:
First I connect a bluetooth mouse to my UbuntuPhone. Then everything works pretty fine until I use the 'backward' key on the mouse, which is normally used to navigate in web browser. If I press this 'backward' key, the UbuntuPhone just crashes and restarts immediatly.
I have not much experience in unsing launchpad. So can anyone tell me where to submit this bug?
I can use telnet to connect to a telnet server simply by typing: 'telnet localhost', whereas localhost can be replaced with any desired IP-Address.
But now I want to do something different and I have this question: Is there any way to open a telnet server (simply a TCP server) in Ubuntu, which simply shows the connected clients and prints out to console every received bytes as ASCII?
I'm running Ubuntu Touch 15.04 on Nexus 4 and GPS does not work.
Of course I enabled 'Location Detection' and 'GPS' in the top menu. Furthermore I have enabled 'Celluar Data' in the Settings menu and gave permissions to the corresponding apps.
Unav, GoogleMaps and Sensorstatus, they all are not able to locate me.
I tried it with the stable channel (15.04 r5) and the RC channel (15.04 23 (I.e. OTA7))
Anyone any Idea to use GPS successfully?
Here are some screenshots. I wonder, cause there are less possibilities than in costales links.
I even tried it near the window over hours with WIFI powered of.
I flashed now the rc-proposed/BQchannel. My settings menu looks now different, but GPS is still not working.
Finally I found this Bug-Report, maybe it is an already known bug.
