I have a series of "old" data center servers (that I bought when my company upgraded) that I use to run Cassandra and Hadoop clusters at home. They are loud, power hungry and take up a lot of space in my basement.
Other than paying a monthly bill to AWS for a bunch of EC2 nodes, what is a better way to have my home data center clusters?
I want to try new OS releases as they arrive, such as Ubuntu 17.04 or Ubuntu 17.10 to see new features. I also like to look at Kubuntu, CentOS or other distros (Windows 11 when it arrives?) - or set up test environments knowing I may trash them and do not want to do this to my core machine.
What set of alternatives are there to do this without risking my main development machine? I am not looking for a debate on the BEST way, but which alternatives are available.
I am running Ubuntu 16.04 and want to use Eclipse Oxygen with a large Tomcat application. Should I just use the standard Tomcat that came with the Ubuntu distro? I have seen a lot of posts about changing file permissions and it seems pretty messy.
