Ubuntu and Unix systems in general use magic numbers to specify a file's type, so that e.g. VLC will open a .mp4 file even if the extension is stripped from the file name. However in scripts the Shebang serves the very same purpose.
Why don't we have individual magic numbers for bash, perl, sed, awk, … scripts as well?

I want to watch the output of git log --oneline --graph with all the colors and tried to adapt the solution from Why don't git colours appear when using watch?, but it just renders (nearly) the whole output in orange:
watch -c$ watch -c git -c color.diff=always log --graph --oneline
Note how from the first commit hash on everything is printed in orange. This is the output of watch from procps-ng 3.3.10 on Ubuntu 16.04.

The output with an additional -c color.diff=always is the same, cat -A shows the ANSI color sequences in use:

How can I get watch git log to show the colors like git log does?
In my home directory there's a directory called “GNUstep”. As I don't use GNUstep I want to remove this directory, but it keeps being created when I do so:
$ tree GNUstep
GNUstep
└── Defaults

$ rm -rf GNUstep
$ tree GNUstep # executed after a few seconds
GNUstep
└── Defaults
1 directory, 0 files
I already removed every related package so that apt search gnustep | grep installed now doesn't show anything. I also did apt autoremove without any avail. I use Lubuntu 16.04.
How can I determine which process creates the directory every time I removed it, and how can I prevent it from doing so?

As a workaround you can change the value of GNUSTEP_USER_DEFAULTS_DIR in /etc/GNUstep/GNUstep.conf file.
Unfortunately there's no such file on my machine, not even /etc/GNUstep exists.

I have a laptop with an external monitor and switch between both screens using xrandr --auto and xrandr --off. Sometimes when I change the screen the font size in programs is suddenly weirdly big. This doesn't affect programs that were started before. I'm using Lubuntu 16.04.
I was able to reproduce the error using this chain of commands multiple times:
xrandr --output eDP1 --off && sleep 1 && xrandr --output eDP1 --auto
The external monitor has nothing to do with this, just disabling the laptop screen (eDP1) and enabling it again suffices to get these weird font size problems.
Edit: What really was changed by xrandr --off is the screen's DPI, see here:
$ xdpyinfo | grep dots
resolution: 96x96 dots per inch
$ xrandr --output eDP1 --off && sleep 1 && xrandr --output eDP1 --auto
$ xdpyinfo | grep dots
resolution: 204x205 dots per inch
For scale: The buttons are normal-sized. Normal VLC window in background, changed one in foreground.
I tried to play around with Lubuntu's (untouched) font settings and can reset the fonts to normal (which should be 11) by choosing font size 6, but the fonts in already open applications (panel etc.) then change to what's really size 6. The only way to set things to normal is logging off and back in again or systemctl restart lightdm.service.
I discovered a possible workaround: At least until today the issue didn't return since I look out for having at least one monitor enabled at any time. So to change from monitor eDP1 to DP2 I do
xrandr --output DP2 --auto && xrandr --output eDP1 --off
This works for now, but of course doesn't solve the problem.
How can I reset the font size when this occurs?

When answering a question here on Ask Ubuntu I sometimes would like to link to a wiki page explaining some topic in more detail, say, the ALSA sound system.
For German speaking users there's the very useful wiki.ubuntuusers.de, but what about an English equivalent? wiki.ubuntu.com comes to mind, but it doesn't even have a page for ALSA, or .profile, or Dolphin, or KDE – you can't be serious!
When looking for information just for myself, I often end up using the excellent Arch Linux wiki, but of course it's weird to link to the Arch Linux wiki to explain Ubuntu stuff.
What did I miss?
LXPanel 0.8.2 in Lubuntu 16.04. The indicator applet in the panel works flawlessly in a horizontal panel, but in a vertical one it still displays the application icons next to each other horizontally instead of vertically. One can see this by changing the panel's width:
doubled width: two symbols 
1 1/2 width: one symbol plus the half of another
normal width: just one of the symbols
What can I do to get the indicator area to display the symbols vertically?

At first: I am aware that there are numerous questions concerning a missing nm-applet icon in a lubuntu/lxde panel, but my case differs and I could not find one of the solutions to be applicable.
On startup, the nm-applet icon correctly shows up in the panel, but when I start the Bluetooth Manager from the Preferences, the nm-applet icon is replaced/overlapped by the blueman-applet icon. When I terminate the blueman-applet process, the nm-applet icon shows up again.
Of course I would like to have both icons side by side in the panel, not just one of them at a time – how can this be done?
Clicking a mailto link in chromium-browser it executes
xdg-email mailto:[email protected]
(or maybe without "mailto:", which seems to be the same thing). In my case this opens kmail instead of thunderbird, and if I purge kmail it just opens nothing (throwing "Could not find 'kmail' executable." in terminal). Of course I made thunderbird my standard mail application, and
xdg-open mailto:[email protected]
does open thunderbird correctly. How can I fix xdg-email (or worse, make chromium use xdg-open instead)?
PS: I found this hack, but there should be a clean way, don't you think?
I'm searching a way to temporarily change the icon of an application (thunderbird in my case) while it's running. I tried a dozen of addons, but none if them did the job. Is there a way to code this?
