The issue relates to a remote connection to a server. After some time (possibly due to inactivity), the access through a GUI (window) application (regardless which application) stops, freezes, and cannot be accessed until after a system reboot. Other than that, the SSH connection via terminal can be reset and it works fine again. But the GUI access remains frozen. Is there any way to "unfreeze" the access without a system restart?

The Activities search seems to be erratic. Sometimes it finds files, sometimes it doesn't. It would find files that I used recently, but otherwise, it finds some obscure files but not the obvious ones I look for (such as text documents). Unlike the Activities search, a search from a folder app brings desired results.
I know the problem is hardly defined but I don't have any other clues of why it happens and how to verify this behavior.
Due to disk space constraints, is it possible to unpack a large archive (tar) file, and at the same time remove it so that we do not have two copies of the same files (one archived and one unpacked) which take up the space?
What simple text editor would you recommend to easily browse and scroll through a large file (a few hundred megabytes+)?
For example, gedit has a problem that when a file is opened, part of the file is darkened which makes reading a file cumbersome.
When I open Firefox, suddenly I cannot change some of the settings (such as site notifications or default browser) and I get a message "Your browser is being managed by your organization". Then when I press it, I get a list: Policy Name Policy Value DisableAppUpdate true, DontCheckDefaultBrowser true
How can I regain the control and functionality of Firefox?
Note: I don't use Avast, nor AVG. Ubuntu version, 20.04. It's a personal computer.
I have visited many sites offering solutions to this problem but nothing helps. I installed all the required codecs but the videos are not played.
For example, for for some videos there appears a message: "No compatible source was found for this media." or "Unfortunately, this video is missing or damaged and cannot be played.". Only YouTube videos are played fine. What is the issue and how to fix it?
The Ubuntu version is 20.04, and interestingly, Chrome has no such problems and can play all the videos.
Codecs installed:
sudo apt install libavcodec-extra
sudo apt install ubuntu-restricted-extras
In Ubuntu, when I search for a file in the Activities window, I get a list of files. When I click on it (or press Enter) the file opens. But how can I open it in the enclosing folder? Can I do it with a shortcut?
In order to speed up typing of a long command, we can make an alias of a command, e.g.
alias remcopy='scp [email protected]:/home/file.txt /home/user/'
And we type user
this exact command will be run.
However, is it possible only to load the command and then modify it according to the current need, e.g.
scp [email protected]:/home/file.txt /home/user/addeddir/
In Terminal when we press Ctrl+R, we can search through the command history. However, if we do not find what we want, how can we go back to the directory prompt, and not have any of the search results displayed?
The default color for annotating PDFs in Document Viewer is pale yellow. How to change this default color?
I noticed that in some cases "move to trash" works as it is supposed to but in other cases it displays the warning that the files will be removed permanently. What is the reason behind such an erratic behavior and how to make sure that if I choose "Move to trash" option, the files will be actually moved to trash?
When we move between elements in a folder by means of the keyboard arrows and if we press it too many times to go beyond the existing number of elements, the system makes beeps for each time it cannot go any further within the directory. How to turn off this beeping sound?
In Ubuntu GUI, to change the name of a file we can press F2. Then the name of the file will highlight, excluding the file extension. What is the keyboard shortcut to place the cursor at the end of the filename, that is after the last character of the filename (and before the extension)?
I installed Pycharm, which automatically created then a shortcut at the Applications Menu. But the shortcut does not work and shows the message
No JDK found. Please validate either PYCHARM_JDK, JDK_HOME or JAVA_HOME environment variable points to valid JDK installation.
But Java is installed:
java version "1.8.0_73"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_73-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.73-b02, mixed mode).
Besides, if I run the script "pycharm.sh" from the command line, it works.
