Typically in an installed version of Ubuntu NOT on a USB but installed on a computer, it's easy to show startup messages. Is there any equivalent when using an install of Ubuntu 20.04 on a startup USB disk, i.e., the installation media of Ubutnu?
jeffschips's questions
I hope everyone is healthy and safe.
I have one lvm luks encrypted ssd let's call it "A" and it is the main drive inside the laptop, and one lvm luks encrypted ssd on USB let's call it "B".
"A" boots no problem and I can access "B" on USB when "A" is booted up after issuing vgrename new_name and de-crypting "B"
However, I need to be able to switch these each out - "B" as main and "A" on USB for transferring files between the two.
If I take "A" out of internal slot and put in "B", the laptop does not boot, but will if I replace it with "A".
I'm wondering if some fancy grub commands can make this work and also wondering if I can make this happen automatically depending on which ssd occupies the laptop's main slot.
"B" has a fully functional Ubuntu 20.04 system but is unable to boot after "A" occupied main laptop ssd slot.
Thank you and any help much appreciated.
I hope everyone and their loved ones are healthy and happy.
When doing an Ubuntu 20.04 USB install with LUKS encryption and LVM, as the install onto the hard drive completes, a message appears that lists the location of the recovery ID. It states your recovery id is located in /home/ubuntu/release
So here's the question: Because of how and when it appears, it's unclear if that message refers to to the new install or in the system running off the USB stick.
I assumed it would be located in the new install. So I completed the installation and lo and behold, there is no recover ID anywhere in the new install.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.

I've been trying to uncover the origin of some network calls, specifically to ip addresss associated with bc.googleusercontent.com
I'm a bit curious why this network activity only happens when using Firefox and from what I've read googleusercontent.com is reported as both a service for individuals outside the google ecosphere for private businesses, etc., as well as being used by google itself.
Using tcpdump on my network adapter and filtering with grep for bc.googlecontent.com isolates the activity, but now I need to dig deeper and find out what service/program etc. is activating these calls.
Strace was recommended, however, it needs the PID which I can't get on a per connection basis or if it happens it's gone quickly so unable to see it. Is there some way to use strace so that it will do the necessary filtering upfront, thereby eliminating all the other activity or better, another linux program I can use to immediately get the name of the program making these connections.
Thank you.
Ubuntu 20.04 Firefox 90.0.2 (64-bit) Firefox fresh install without even a default page.
tcpdumping the network connection with Firefox in troubleshooting mode with everything disabled I see lots of connections to bc.googleusercontent.com. This only happens in Firefox, not chrome or other browsers. Watching the network traffic when going to any page I see lots of connections to bc.googleusercontent.com.
I know this is google clouds service - but why? Any page I go to the tcpdump shows connections to bc.googleusercontent.com and as I said, even before loading a page whence just opening the browser. Here is a snippet of the network data:

New to Ubuntu 20.04 uname -r 5.8.0-55-generic lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS Release: 20.04 Codename: focal
After running apt-get update and then upgrade the only odd message I receive is:
[![The following packages have been kept back: linux-generic-hwe-20.04 linux-headers-generic-hwe-20.04 linux-image-generic-hwe-20.04][1]][1]
Then, GUI software updater keeps popping up asking me to install all the files in the attached screenshot.
- Is this safe?
- Why does software updater conflict with the success messages of apt-get update/upgrade? Or is it trying to tell me I still need to do something about linux-generic-hwe-20.04 linux-headers-generic-hwe-20.04 in it's own cute, yet surpentine way?
I do apologize. New to the commend editor and it does not support line breaks.
I did: apt-get update then apt-get upgrade.
Also:

I've completely purged Skype from ubuntu 20.04 since I kept receiving the following error whenever apt-get update and couldn't find a solution:
Err:4 https://repo.skype.com/deb stable InRelease

E: The repository 'https://repo.skype.com/deb stable InRelease' is not signed.
Yet, I still receive the above error when apt-get update even though I've removed the public key, all Skype installs and Snaps.
What is going on?
Just curious - is it normal after doing an apt-get update then upgrade to repeatedly receive messages telling me to install ubuntu base on my desktop computer?
Reading about what ubuntu base is makes me wonder why do I need it on an operating system?
I haven't clicked on "Install now" but usually do an apt-get update followed by upgrade. And just doing only apt-get update, now I see:

As far as I can tell, there are no tweaks for showing the year on the top bar clock in Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa). I find it for < 20.04, but I can't find a suitable solution for Ubuntu 20.04.
Our service frequently needs to take screenshots identifying the year of a screenshot and the Ubuntu clock only believes in hour minute seconds date and day of week. That doesn't help people who need to record the year in a screenshot.

I have two machines. One running Wily Werewolf Ubuntu 15.10 and the other running 14.04.4 LTS, Trusty Tahr.
Whatever you call the network connection app in the upper right-hand corner of the screen (because I've heard it referred to as both NetworkAdmin and network-manager depending on which internet search link you click on) on the 15.10 machine under "edit connections" | "IPV6 settings" there is an option for "IPv6 privacy extensions", whereas on the 14.04 machine no such option exists.
Both machines have exactly the same networking parameters and are setup to benefit from IPV6.
