I have been trying to accomplish this task for years and every time I try it, I fail miserably and simply give up completely after Googling it and trying for hours. This time though, I decided to seek help from you!

Logically speaking, It should be a very straightforward simple task as follows:

Step 1: Right-click on the menu button, then go to "Edit Applications".

Step 2: Click on "Add new item", assign a menu entry name then create your launcher or command.

No matter how many variations of commands I try, it is never working out. I tried to launch the Konsole terminal then execute the command, but the Konsole is not holding still and closing automatically even after issuing the right flag to keep it running.

konsole -e anaconda-navigator --noclose

Specifying the command directly also does not work out and simply renders nothing on the screen.

I wonder why it has to be very hard like that. Your help will be greatly appreciated!

My System Information - For Reference:

The Dolphin file manager has a split view feature that allows you to view two directories from the same window at the same time.

Is there any similar feature on the Nautilus file manager under Ubuntu 17.10?

Note: I am using the latest stable version of Nautilus v3.28.0.

Any suggestions or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

The ISO files that I have are not being detected properly by my Kubuntu system.

Some of them are getting detected as "Raw CD Image" but others getting classified as "Text Document" or "Windows Executable Program".

Is there any way to fix this classification problem?

When copying or moving files on Ubuntu 17.10, I can't see any progress bar. I checked as well all opened windows but I can't see any progress window.

Please any ideas or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

I am currently using Kubuntu 17.10 but previously I was running the Ubuntu Mate Desktop.

After installing the Kubuntu Desktop, I deleted all the traces of Ubuntu Mate using the following commands:

sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove mate-desktop
sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove mate-desktop
sudo apt-get remove mate-*
sudo apt-get autoremove

However, when I opened my KDE partition manager, I saw the following:

• ATA TOSHIBA DT01ACA1 - 931.51 GiB (/dev/sda) - This is where my Kubuntu is installed.

• ATA Hitachi HDS72101 - 931.51 GiB (/dev/sdb) - An empty hard drive.

• ububutu-mate-vg - 931.27 GiB (/dev/ubuntu-mate-vg) - I have no idea what this is but it seems it is including the ext4 and linuxswamp partitions which logically should belong to the ATA TOSHIBA DT01ACA1 (/dev/sda).

Note: I have never manually partitioned my hard drive in any way. I always use the default settings and options.

My Questions:

Q1). What is the "ubuntu-mate-vg" entry that occupies the /dev/sda5 in the same device of my Kubuntu installation (First Screenshot)?

Q2). What is that "ubuntu-mate-vg" entry that is taking a whole section in my list of devices (Second Screenshot)? and is it possible to delete it?

Please, I would like to know how risky it can be to update the kernel of Ubuntu to the latest stable version.

Currently, I am running Kubuntu 17.04 which uses the kernel 4.10.0-22-generic. The latest stable Kernel version at the time of writing this question is: 4.11.4.

In addition to that, it would be great if you can point out any Ubuntu or Debian-based distribution that uses the latest stable version of the kernel.

Any suggestions, comments, or answers will be greatly appreciated.

Please, what is the recommended PPA to use for installing the latest stable version of the VLC player on Kubuntu 17.04?

The Dolphin file manager is not showing the dimensions metadata when hovering over the images and previewing them. It used to show them in the past.

How do I show the image dimensions metadata when hovering over the image?

At the moment, when hovering over any image, I am getting the following basic information without the dimensions:

Note 1: Using the right-click button is not helping at all. I am still not able to see any option that would bring up the dimensions.

Note 2: Going to the properties window is also not helping. I still can't see the dimensions in that area.

Update: Updating my system to Kubuntu 17.04 and enabling the backports PPA to get the latest versions did not help in solving the problem.

I have a folder that contains over 500+ files with a certain prefix. Those files are spread in multiple folders in one directory. My objective is to re-name that prefix in those multiple files.

Sample File Names and Paths:

• MyFiles/my-old-FileOfAlice.txt
• MyFiles/Folder 1/my-old-FileOfTom.odt
• MyFiles/Folder 2/my-old-FileOfJane.doc

The Objective Is To Rename Them To:

• MyFiles/my-new-FileOfAlice.txt
• MyFiles/Folder 1/my-new-FileOfTom.odt
• MyFiles/Folder 2/my-new-FileOfJane.doc

Notes:

• The files do not have the same extension.
• The files are spread in multiple folders under the same directory. I am using Kubuntu 16.10. Any Ubuntu oriented answer will be accepted and appreciated.

Please, do you know how to search recursively using the Dolphin file manager?

Clicking the search option "From Here" is not searching recursively at all. Is there an option to allow recursive searching?

I need my system to be able to display the characters of Chinese, Japanese, and Right-To-Left languages like Arabic. At the moment, it is not able to display the characters of those languages (e.g. the names of the files that are written in those foreign characters).

Having said that, I still want my main input method and my system language to be in American English.

I have tried to look for language support in the settings, but couldn't even the find the entry. Any solutions or suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

Please, I need your help with the following:

The Problem: I can't copy/move one file (or more) from one directory to another unless if both directories are opened using the file manager. In other words, if I closed the file manager after copying the files from the first directory, the system clears out the copied files and thus stopping me from pasting them into the other directory. By closing the file manager, I mean closing the instance of the file manager that is displaying the files and not terminating the process of the file manager (i.e. the file manager process is still running).

I have recently noticed that the latest version of Ubuntu does not come with the latest stable Linux kernel version.

For example, Kubuntu 16.04 LTS comes with Kernel 4.4.0-21-generic while the latest stable kernel version is 4.5.2.

There is surely a strong reason why they don't ship the OS with the latest stable kernel which is something I would like to learn about.

I would also like to know if updating the kernel to its latest stable edition is a bad idea or not.

Each time I try to download the new Plasma widget from the Plasma Add-On Installer, I get the following error:

The Problem: The task manager dropdown menus are all transparent and not readable at all. The same goes for all the dropdown menus of libre office. I have tried to change the desktop theme but the transparency kept on appearing on all those menus hindering me from reading them. Disabling all the effects of the desktop (ALT + Shift + F12) did not help at all as well.

Objective: I need to remove all the opacity and transparency of those menus. I simply need a clear readable desktop environment.

Any suggestions, comments or solutions will be greatly appreciated.

Note: I am using Kubuntu 15.10 (Not a fresh installation. I have just installed the KDE desktop environment on top of the Ubuntu Mate 15.10 then decided to use it as my default.

I am aware that the shortcode of "Shift + Alt + F12" disables all the desktop effects of Kubuntu 15.10. However, is there a way to disable all those effects automatically and permanently in every future session?

Objective: Speeding up Kubuntu 15.10 as much as possible.

Please, i need someone to help me in making a very simple bash script. The job of this script is just to press a certain combination of keys on the keyboard.

My objective is to create a script that would turn off the Kubuntu desktop effects completely. The key combination for that is: "Left-ALT + Left-Shift + F12". I am aware that there is a widget that might do this job, but i am trying to learn how to accomplish it with a bash script.

I have tried to do an online search but i guess i was choosing the wrong set of keywords. I did not manage to reach a tutorial or a reference that would mention this task.
