I have a Lenovo X1 Extreme and Lenovo Thunderbolt docking station 40AN0230EU

When laptop is connected to the docking station it won't turn on the extra monitors on boot (which are connected directly to docking station).

I first need to open the laptop lid and log in and only then the extra monitors turn on.

This is a more technical question, but I hope someone could come to an idea what can I try to do so that the monitors turn on when the laptop boots to the login screen.

Update: This seems only a problem under Ubuntu, windows users don't have any problems with this.

After booting the VM with Ubuntu server 18.04.2 I get these extra lines printed in terminal...

Is there a way to hide those? So that it looks like this and stays so:

We have a windows server with DHCP and 2 Linux machines with Ubuntu 16

if we set /etc/network/interfaces like this:

Then all works fine. So in short, first the machine sets static IP then it uses DHCP and it gets that ip 192.168.1.18

And if we delete those two last lines:

allow-hotplug eth0
  iface eth0 inet dhcp

There is no internet at all on the machine. Can anyone explain this please?

I have installed Thunderbird on my Ubuntu machine and connected my gmail account and Thunderbird started to download all my emails (2353 emails)

How to prevent this from happening. I don't want to download all my mails. 10 or 20 last mails is more than enough!

Is there some option to change this?

When I start my Ubuntu there is this splash screen:

and i got rid of it by changing this line:

from
GRUB_TIMEOUT=2
to
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0

so it skips the grub right away.

But if I force reset/power off the machine I get this screen:

Now with 30 seconds countdown...

My question is where is this coming from, which file? I want to change it and it's not in /etc/default/grub

I am learning about iptables and can't find an explanation about the difference between these 2 rules:

sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW -m tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

What does the state "NEW" mean? If there is a state "NEW" is there a state "OLD" then?

Let's say if some one has Ubuntu server 12.04 should he reinstall and put 16.04 or just update the security updates??? This is just an example.

I want to hear more opinions on this. What is a normal thing to do. I think there is no more linux servers online serving a website with ubuntu 8.04. It needs to be reinstalled at some point. Maybe it's not reinstalled? Maybe it can be upgraded? What is the standard procedure?

I have installed Ubuntu Server 16.04 and on top of it GNOME in a VirtualBox VM. Since I updated the system, I can boot the VM, access the terminal console and log in - but when I run startx in order to start the graphical GNOME desktop environment, I receive the following error message:

Among the updates were some kernel packages. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

And I know that I can hit Ctrl+H to show the hidden files but I want to learn so if I want to add some other options later I can use this answer.

I have only United States for my Region and Formats probably because I have a custom installed Ubuntu!

On my laptop only Viber sounds are distorted. And that is only if viber is in stand by. But if i get more messages it gets better. (after 3-4 messages)

What can I do to install it?

I am trying to install ubuntu server on my laptop and it doesn't recognize the wifi card on start of the installation. And i think it's because it is turned off. How can i turn it on without hardware switch?

I have managed to install it without wifi (that is my only nic) and turned it on after, but i don't have internet now. How to connect to my wifi network from command line?

I found that i need this wpasupplicant but i can't install it without internet. Maybe this can be found on iso image?

Normally when i want to add a user for samba shared folder i use this command:

sudo smbpasswd -a <username>

and then this pops out

and now I want to do this in a script but so that it doesn't stop there and ask me to insert password

My username is ubuntu and my machine is called ubuntu.

What I want is when I create a file in some folder that it has a signature

user      group
ubuntu    www-data

at the moment whatever i create has a signature

ubuntu    ubuntu

Can I simply remove my user from group ubuntu and add it to group www-data?

I have installed the ubuntu-server 16.04 and VBoxLinuxadditions and Samba

I am trying to share a folder from this server to my windows host machine. Now I can see this virtual server on my network but there are no shared folders on the server.

How do I make one through the command line?

I have just installed LXQt on Ubuntu server 16.04 like this:

First i have installed ubuntu server from scratch, logged in as a user ubuntu and then i run:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

sudo apt install xinit
sudo apt install lxqt-core
sudo apt install xdm

and now if i run sudo startx after login i get into GUI but there are 2 problems

1. screen is black and it's openbox gui
  - I can right click and I get a menu with some options
2. there is no taskbar menu with "start button"

I would like to get into LXQt desktop environment with taskbar and a start button.

What else do I need to install or configure to make it work?

I am working with Laravel but i have installed all on my own (php, mysql, composer, nginx) and now i need to install Redis and configure it so i could use it for queue driver in Laravel.

How to install it, because it cannot be installed through apt-get install redis

i get this error:

I am using Virtual Box and if i lose internet connection or anything happens with my network adapter on host machine i will lose the internet connection on my Virtual Machine.

Even if i connect again, the host is fine but my Virtual Machine can't connect, i need to restart it in order to get internet.

Is there a way to restart networking on the Virtual Machine somehow without rebooting the whole Virtual Machine?

but it just hangs and nothing happens.

I'm building a bash script for my virtual machine and I would like to know how to replace a specific line in this document:

I have tried with "tee" and "sed" but couldn't make it work. This should be very easy for someone who works with bash scripts more often than me.
