Okay, I wanted previews for psd files in Nautilus. So I tried the scripts found on this page: How to make Nautilus display .psd thumnails?

This did not work, so then I found this maintained PPA, and I decided to try that.

It did not seem to work either. But it does krita files in addition to psd so I made a krita file and that preview worked!

So I think the issue is that the first script I ran somehow messed up my settings so that the installed PPA won't work.

Any clue on how I can reverse the effects of the first script? I don't know enough about the internals of Linux etc to really manipulate this stuff very well. I can use Linux, and do web development but I'm not really clear on how it actually manages thumbnail settings etc. I assume that's something that the shell does etc.

Okay so I've written a function which loops through all files in a folder (only to a depth of 1) and compresses them to a smaller file size.

I'm currently ripping VHS tapes using OBS, and I was hoping I could set a watch function to run every time a new file is added.

I've seen in other threads that inotifywait can be used for this but I don't quite get how it's syntax is set up etc.

For instance I saw in this thread this script:

So the first problem is if I just et my current function in there then I think it will just end up trying to compress all the files every single time a new file is is added.

EDIT: Okay, so I was kind of mulling over stuff and then I checked the manpage and I think I figured it out except that my events are getting triggered twice by OBS, and not at the very end when OBS actually finalizes making the file

Very straightforward question. I have seen some answers on other websites about how to do it using terminal.app on Mac but I haven't seen any Ubuntu or Linux specific instructions.

Before anyone says, yes I know ctrl+right, yes I know GUIs are for dumb people like me, yes I know that it's a blasphemous thing to want to use a mouse input in the a terminal etc etc etc. /s

But if someone has a useful answer, please let me know.

If it's terminal emulator specific that is also fine. I've been using Hyper.js for most of my work but it's performance is slow and I'm looking to change to something else.

I'm also willing to install shell plugins etc if necessary(if that would even be possible to change this behavior. I don't know if it would). I am currently using zsh as my shell.

Also I enabled soft wrapping for nano by default, but using the nano -m flag does not seem to be working for me though maybe I'm missing something. I think this may be a limitation of Hyper.js though, so I'll try to do some testing elsewhere.

EDIT: Thank you for the link but gpm does not appear to be what I'm looking for. I'm looking for something that allows me to place my cursor in a different location, not something that allows me to select sections of text with the cursor. I can already do that.

I'm new to Linux and I've spent the last couple of weeks installing, reinstalling, trying different Desktop Environments, and setting up a personal cloud server.

Along the way the applications I've used have varied, and now that I've finally got my shell etc the way I want it, I've started installing my work and productivity related apps for good.

A lot of these apps are electron because I'm trying to remain as cross platform as possible. I know some of these apps work because on previous installations they worked fine.

But I have started noticing that at some point since my last Re-installation of Ubuntu, all my electron based apps have stopped working.

I think it might have to do with my attempt at building and installing the launcher Hain. It was the only electron app I found that required being built and for some weird reason the node deps wouldn't auto install so I tried going down the tree manually and installing them myself.

I've removed all electron apps from my computer and I've tried to scrub it clean of any left over install of node or npm. But when I reinstall these electron apps they don't work. They don't properly show up in the Software Center installed apps location. Instead they only appear under extensions for some reason and they lack icons. When I try launching them from Software Center, nothing happens.

I tried launching Hyper.js and I can see it in the system monitor but the app itself does not appear.

The same is true of other electron apps. What should I do?

Okay I've been troubleshooting this for a couple of hours and I'm not really sure where I'm at but here's the situation and what I've figured out:

I have desktop that I use ethernet with. But in order to connect my phone to it via the kde connect app I need to have them connect through wifi.

I know I have a wifi chip built into this motherboard. It's a weird motherboard that I picked up from a friend, and even on Windows the wifi part of it hasn't always really worked consistently. But after some troubleshooting I've found that despite being built into the motherboard it's detected as some kind of usb device.

Trying to add the deb non-free repo to my apt-sources list results in an error in Ubuntu as it's unsigned, and I don't really understand how to get it signed but I did eventually find a package repo that had a port of the non-free repo in a deb which I installed from here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/utopic/amd64/linux-firmware-nonfree/1.16

But if I then try to apt install atheros-firmware it still can't find the package name etc.

The weird thing is that previous times when I've had it unplugged from the ethernet while installing Ubuntu, it had no trouble finding the wireless and making it work automatically.

Okay so I've already done some research on this and I seem to have an intersection of a few problems.

I have a drive /mnt/md0 that is a Raid1 3TB NTFS drive. My OS is 18.04.1 and is running off a separate SSD.

When I first right clicked on a folder in Nautilus it said "send to trash" and then when I did it would give me an error message saying it couldn't find the Trash folder. I did some research and found this answer: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/384237/cannot-delete-into-trash/384491#384491

So I followed these instructions to make a trash directory on my Archive drive.

 sudo mkdir -p /mnt/md0/.Trash-1000/{expunged,files,info}  

 sudo chown -R $USER /mnt/md0/.Trash-1000

This made a folder with the required sub folders etc.

Now when I right click it doesn't say "send to trash" it just says "delete permanently". I want to be able to send it to the trash. So I did more research and I found that the issue was that the folder did not have the proper permissions. I thought it did because I chowned it in the second command but when I locked at a folder inside I could see that only root has ownership and permission. I tried again, and it didn't work. So I tried via sudo nautilus and it would flick right back to root, as described in this issue someone else posted: Permissions fail to change, even using sudo nautilus

Apparently this has something to do with the filesystem being NTFS. I chmod 775 /mnt/md0 aaaaand.... it changed the permissions! Now everyone can write and delete files. BUT delete permanently is still the only option.

What should I do? I guess I could give everyone read, write, and execute privileges but that seems risky. This archive will hold a lot of important sentimental backups for photos and stuff and I'm mounting into a cloud server and I don't want to expose it to unnecessary risks. Any suggestions?

Okay, so starters, I'm a designer learning code, I know a little frontend but I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to backend. I'm trying to set up a personal cloud server using NextCloud on a home desktop.

And I'm having trouble completing the second because when I go to localhost.localdomain it shows the output of the ngninx test index.php file rather than the setup screen for NextCloud as expected.

I'm actually kind of baffled how it's serving the test page to me because.... I created it and as far as I can tell it should have been overwritten when I copied over the NextCloud files. The NextCloud folder index.php does not look anything like the test file I produced in nano to test if the server config was correct. I have restarted the server and it keeps showing me the wrong thing. It's really weird.

Any ideas on what I could be doin gwrong here?

Also usually I include code with stack questions, but I'm not actually sure what code I can include here with out endangering my home computer? Uh... like I said... I really don't know what the hell I'm doing, I'm just taking a stab at things.

Oh yeah and the reason I'm trying to check the localhost version is because I seem to be having some issues with my use of a personal subdomain because my DNS provider forces https and I haven't got an SSL cert yet for my home desktop server. I'm not quite sure what to do to fix that issue but I figure it's one thing at a time.

So I did an install of Kubuntu about two weeks ago. I'm fixing to install my cloud server with NextCloud and get it configured to run with my home network etc but in the process, running mount I notice some really weird output results. Why are there so many entries for mount? Shouldn't it just be all the physical drives and the partitions on them? Why are there so many partitions? I see some of them labeled "snap". Are each of these partitions for a different application installed by snap?

How can I clean this up? This stuff looks like a mess!

I don't even know if Windows has "icon themes" per se, but I've used the third party application "Icon Packager" and "Icon Developer" in the past to make and package icon sets for Windows use.

The icon themes that I find being used in the linux community are WAAAY better though so I'm curious if I can port some of those icons over to a windows format for my own use? Is that possible?

Very straightforward question. When I try and run the PPAs it tells me that there is no release and it won't do it for security reasons. Does it not exist?

When I go to their website, they offer the ability to compile from source but that's a whole lot of stuff to do, and I thought fontforge came standard on Ubuntu and stuff? Or at least I would expect it to be installable from a deb or something. Isn't Ubuntu like one of the biggest distros? So I would think that they would have a version of font forge for it by now... right?

really sorry I know this is a super common question but I've searched the other answers and so far nothing seems to be very helpful, and/or I lack the knowledge to properly diagnose the issue further and give more relevant information.

Here is the information I do have:

I have this USB extender plugged into a USB 3 port in the back of my machine.

I have this USB hub plugged into that. I have to use this setup because this new Kubuntu machine is kept in the closet as a media and cloud server.

I have this mouse plugged into one of the ports on the hub.

I have this keyboard plugged into one of the ports on the hub.

Nothing else is plugged into the hub.

The lagging is sporadic. It comes and goes on both the mouse and the keyboard (though it seems the keyboard more so). It's like it's intermittently picking up signal or something. I'm sitting right next to the hub and I have no problem when in a Windows installation.

when it starts messing up I switch to a wired keyboard and a wired mouse which I plug into the same hub. The cord on the keyboard is messed up so after awhile I'll get frustrated with it acting janky when I shift the cord on my lap or something, and then I'll check back and see if the wireless keyboard is working again, and sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. I can't seem to find any particular rhyme or reason to it.

I have checked the batteries and that is not the issue, as I can tell due to the fact that it works fine in Windows etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I've read about it, you're supposed to make it executable etc, and I have but double clicking it does not work. Trying to open it direct from CLI using ./appimagename*.AppImage does not work either. I tried to open one for Etcher and it told me that libfuse was not available or something but when I looked that up and saw a response about needing to install it, I tried to install it and it said I already had the latest version.... so not really sure what's up with that?

But I don't have enough rep to ask a further clarifying question. I also think my question's phrasing is a little more precise to what I'm actually trying to understand as it doesn't contain as much confusion over the relationship between KDE Plasma and Ubuntu etc.

It seems to me that if Ubuntu is just the OS with Gnome installed by default, and Kubuntu is just Ubuntu with KDE installed by default then installing KDE on Ubuntu or installing Gnome on Kubuntu should basically amount to the same thing right?

A physical volume is like the actual physical disk drive. A logical volume is when you combine or divide multiple physical disk drives under the presentation of a single virtual disk drive. Correct?

SHORT VERSION:

Without doing too much explaining here's my questions:

1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu on to a Logical Volume which is made of 2 SSDs and 1 HDD?
2. Is it possible to install Ubuntu on a Logical volume which is made of 2 SSDs and 2HDDs which are Raided together for backup protection
3. Is it possible for a Windows installation to see the logical volumes?

Long Version for background

I am converting my home desktop into a cloud-backup/media server. I have these drives on my home desktop:

• 250GB SSD

• 111GB SSD

• 500GB HDD

• 2.75TB HDD

• 2.75TB HDD

Then I also have 500gb SSD for my Windows only Surface Book 2 laptop which I use mostly at work.

I want to divide my work files into 2 categories: "Current Working Projects" and "Archive".

My aim is to have all my current working projects files on my laptop and then backed-up automatically via NextCloud to my desktop, and then use the larger storage on my desktop to make all Archive files accessible from the web, as needed.

The reason I want to have as many of the drives grouped together is so that when I save stuff etc in the partition I'm not having to think about my file structure in relation to the physical division of the drives.

I'd like it so that when I go to my home folder I can stuff divide like this

   • Windows on {111GB} but it has access to the 2.75gb if it needs.

2. Install

   • Ubuntu on a LV-{250gb ssd, 111gb, 2.75tb RAID}
   • Windows {500GB}

3. Install

   • Ubuntu LV-{250gb ssd, 500GB}
   • Archive drive {2.75gb RAID with root symlinked into the Home Directory of Ubuntu and also Windows}
   • Windows on {111gb}.

Which of those are possible and which do you think is best?

newbie here. UX Designer learning to code. I did a search for this but couldn't find an answer so I'm sorry if this is a dumb question.

I'm running Ubuntu 16.04. I've been trying out a couple of different Desktop Environments and it's resulted in too many applications made for those desktop environments clogging up my application folders. I'm current using Plasma which I think I'll probably stick with it (though I'm also thinking about taking a look at KDE Neon too).

I already know how to remove stuff via the CLI I think, but I was hoping there was a GUI way so that I could see everything all at once maybe?

I also don't know if I'm actually removing them correctly because when I removed xfce4 it removed it but the xfce terminal is still available in the menu, so I don't know if that means I have to go through and uninstall manually every single part of the desktop environment separately?

I'm trying to change the theme using Unity Tweak Tool but when I switch to one of the themes I find here: https://b00merang.weebly.com/redmond-collection.html it doesn't change anything about the actual app launcher. What's up with that?

Designer/Artist here using Ubuntu for some neural network projects. I am pretty new to Ubuntu/Linux and I don't quite know how to get things looking the way I want.

The main thing annoying me is how if I have two Mozilla windows open they stack. I don't want them to stack. I want to see multiple mozilla things in my launcher, similar to the way that windows taskbar does. I'd also like if instead of just icons it could have an icon plus text.

I've seen things for Gnome to do this I think but I don't quite know how to get that working on Ubuntu? I'm on Ubuntu 16.

I played around with the WSL last year, but at the time it was not capable of running the neural network project that I wanted to try on it. Apparently had something to do with it having an outdated kernel or something of the sort.

Since then, there's been a lot of updates to the WSL. What are the limitations of running programs that works on Ubuntu on the WSL? Are they essentially equivalent? Is there some piece of information that I can use to determine this ahead of time?

To start with here are my specs:

• 970 FTW edition
• i5 2550k
• 8 gigs of DDR3 1600 mhz
• MSI Z77A-G41
• 250 GB SSD for OS and apps
• 150 GB SSD for apps
• 3 TB 5400 rpm for storage
• 500 GB 7200 rpm for media prod work
• 900w Antec PSU

Okay, so I'm an artist/designer. I work with digital media, and know a little code, and build my own computers, but I am by no means a terminal savvy code wiz. I wanted to try out using some recent neural network projects from GitHub for some art projects, but they've only been built for Unix, so I decided to make a persistent USB drive.

I made one, but the maximum storage you can give it, with casper-rw, is 4 gigs. The neural network takes up about 6 gigs of space, so I needed to make a larger size. I tried expanding the size using gpart, but ran into some problems. So I decided to just start over, format es4 and just do a full install on the USB drive. I tried this, and it I got some weird error messages. I did research online and it seems to have something to do with UEFI or something like that? I'm supposed to disable it. But that isn't working. If I disable UEFI I just get a blank black screen with a blinking underscore. If I don't then I get this:

Please ignore the dorky reflection. I did not know any other way to take a screenshot of my tablet monitor while in a boot mode like that.

I was able to get the live cd usb persistent thing working fine, it's this full install on the usb drive that isn't working. I thought about also doing an install on an external usb ssd drive I have, but I'd really prefer if I could get this 32gig flash drive working with a persistent Linux since I have some other things I'd like a portable persistent desktop drive for. Any thoughts?
