I have a website www.example.com running on Apache.
Maybe someone got to me via example.com, or www.example.com, or http://example.com, or even http://www.example.com.
Can I use the rewrite rules in .htaccess so that however they get to example.com, the URL is fully fleshed out to http://www.example.com?
I have a specific directory on my server:
Within .htaccess of my server I am doing a 301 redirect:

The proper meta data from the wikipedia page is:

However, if I post my link: www.example.com/myfavrockgroup onto Twitter or Facebook, the 301 redirect does not grab the meta tags from Wikipedia, instead it looks no further than my server.
Is there a way around this? Anyway to program within the .htaccess to grab the proper meta tags from the wiki page?
Linux is far from my forte, at most I can use it just enough to keep a server at home.

I have a directory that I would like only real users to access.
That directory is www.example.com/video
I have gone into /etc/apache2/apache2.conf and made sure that the following was set:

Then I entered into the path /var/www/example.com/public_html/video and created the following .htaccess file:

I realize the passwd file seems in a strange place, according to other posts I have looked at. But when I cat it, it has all passwords, including test users I created today.
I get the proper popup,
Yet it won't accept any users and their passwords. The web page I get, once I give up and click cancel is:
Unauthorized
This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required.

Any thoughts as to what I am doing incorrectly?
I have an Perl script that runs all night, through a terminal window (Win10 putty.exe) on my Ubuntu server. As with many home networks, I occasionally lose my internet connection, which kills my connection and the script.
Running another Perl script through cron (which checks if my script is running), I am able to restart the Perl script.
However it is running without a window.
Is there a method that when I putty into Ubuntu, I can open a terminal window that shows the output from my Perl script which is now running?

I am running Perl scripts on my Ubuntu server, 18.04. I run them from my Mac and PC. One of them is a short, repetitive Perl script that relies on an outdated CPAN module, sometimes the app crashes and the SSH (Putty.exe and Terminal) connection just closes.
For the few times when I see the error, I am able to find where it occurred and throw in a "try/catch" statement. But with the window closing, if I am not there, I have no idea where the error is.
Is there a way to keep terminal window from auto-closing?

Just changed the DNS so it will take a while to make sure that part works.
However, I'm currently using the same server with just the IP address to do some Perl scripts they're called by x.x.x.x/cgi-bin/perlscript.pl
And that part has stopped working.
The error log contains
AH01276: Cannot serve directory /var/www/html/: No matching DirectoryIndex (index.html,index.cgi,index.pl,index.php,index.xhtml,index.htm) found, and server-generated directory index forbidden by Options directive
So since I just set up just the conf file for the domain name based server, did I somehow mess up everything?
Can Ubuntu host two virtual servers where one is domain name based and the other just IP based?
---UPDATE---
The DNS update was quick enough that new domain website, example.com, works. Now I just need to be able to get back to working off my other website based purely on IP address.
I am using Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS Release: 18.04 and I want to know if there's a maximum of directories that I can't go beyond?
Am running an Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS server. I can login to it either from my LAN or from the cloud with my router's port forwarding.
After a while of being up and running the server becomes unreachable via the LAN. I cant log into via Putty nor FTP. And that's from multiple devices I use to login to that server.
However, when this error occurs I can login from the outside, the cloud.
Logs from Putty have no info other than "can't connect." When this situation occurs I can't even ping the server on it's local IP address.
Rebooting it solves it all, but I have no idea what's causing this. Seems weird.

The default user that Perl scripts run from browsers is www-data. My scripts need permission to read/write/delete files in other directories. All these directories are created within the /home directory (all recursive, i.e. /home/Daniel/ftp/files) and these directories and files are created at run time by different users.
Is there a way to give www-data broader authority? Should I change the default user that runs Perl scripts (again from browsers) even though that sounds dangerous?

I have a new Ubuntu remote machine set up, and for some reason my history doesn't work. When I try and use the arrow key I get escape codes. Here is my full .profile file, the 1st line works so I know the file is being read:

HISTFILESIZE=2500
As a side note I am using Putty, and it worked fine on a local machine, this new remote machine is located elsewhere in the country. I did try changing the Terminal type from 'xterm' and 'linux' to no avail.

I put a new Ubuntu install on a laptop. During the install I was able to indicate which network connection to use, which it did. Hooked up wirelessly to my router, and even the WiFi on indicator led on the laptop was positive.
But after install it never works. The LED indicates no network, and the most I could find with my limited Linux experience is that the adapter never goes from virbr0 to eth0 and I catch a glimpse that on bootup "Failed to start Raise network interfaces".
One thing that hits me is that in the install I have to select it and type in the wifi password. Is what I'm missing is "a way to enter the password on each reboot?"
If anyone can help me through this I sure would appreciate it. Thanks.
