I seem to not often be able to get my headphones to connect on my laptop. I am using a thinkpad x220 and all system updates are installed. Using blue man once they are connected to change the audio profile. It seems I just can't turn already paired headphones on and have them auto-connect. Usually have to just pair again every time, which doesn't always work either. Is there a way to connect them through the command line. Also, is there a kernel update or anything else that is a known fix for bluetooth at this time? Thanks!
Kdrumz's questions
Has anyone figured out a fix for the bluetooth? I am having trouble connecting skull candy crushers to my laptop(16.04). It seems like the only way possible is to always unpair in settings-> bluetooth, then put them into discovery mode, then go into sound and change output to the headphone name, then go into blueman and change the audio profile, and this still doesn't usually even work for me. Any fixes or could anyone help me out? Thanks!

I have searched all the posts here on ask ubuntu on how to do this and can't seem to figure it out still. What is the best way to disable and enable turbo boost? My fans are running quite loud on my x220 so I'd like to disable it. Thanks!
I logged into Gmail and I had an email from Amazon about rating a recent order. I didn't recognize the company, but decided to open the email, then immediately saw it wasn't from Amazon and looked like it was a "bad" email with a lot of random stuff and someone trying to exploit something.
I am on 16.04. I always read Ubuntu is pretty safe because of everything requiring root. Is there any software I should run to make sure nothing is on my system now or anything I should do to make sure I am safe? I am usually careful about emails but this one got me.
For an example, I am in the directory Desktop
. I then do cd break
and when I list all files in break, i have for example main.cpp
file. I am trying to be able to go straight from Desktop to opening up main.cpp
using sublime text(using subl
to open it) without getting to break
then doing subl main.cpp
but can't seem to figure it out. This is what I want to do:
/Desktop $ cd break/subl main.cpp
but obviously that won't work. How do I do this and combine everything into one command?
Every time I open up emacs, I tend to get this text on my screen.. How do I permanently hide it? Thanks!
I am trying to install vpnc using:
sudo apt-get install vpnc network-manager-vpnc network-manager-vpnc-gui
I get an error:
unable to locate package network-manager-vpnc-gui
I'm not sure what to do. Do I need to add something to my /etc/apt/sources.list
? Any help is great!
I am supposed to run a script Microsoft has provided for installing .net core to make sure I get rid of any version I already have, and the script is from github. How do I run it?
I need to do Step 2 from this page
I don't have github installed on my computer, but I am not sure if I need it?
I downloaded visual studio code and also needed to download the .net core. I am on Ubuntu 16.04 and went to this page https://www.microsoft.com/net/core#ubuntu but accidentally ran all of the code under Ubuntu 14.04 / Linux Mint 17 without paying attention, instead of the section of code under for 16.04. Is there a way to undo this? I don't want to mess anything up if I run the other code.. Still new to installing packages from the terminal like this so I am not sure what to do. Thanks!
I'm not having trouble taking the screen shots. When I use alt and prtsc I am given the option of where to save it at. However, when I use ctrl alt prtsc to take a screen shot of a certain section, the window acts like it's going to come up, but then goes away.. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
I can't figure out how to disable the colors in the terminal(just the default, gnu it's called?). Been looking for an hour and ran some code that I saw else where. Also tried emacs ~/.bashrc and added a line that was supposed to disable the color, it worked once then I closed the terminal, ls again, and the colors were back. Any help is great!
upgrading Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04.1. Prompted with Replace the customized configuration file '/etc/default/rcS'?
I am not sure what to do, keep or replace..? Thanks!
So i have a x220 with the only os on there being ubuntu 16.04 on my 500 gb samsung evo drive. I have windows 10 on a thumb drive that I want to install alongside ubuntu so that I can dual boot them. If I install windows, will it overwrite ubuntu and mess it up? I heard this happens, but is it hard to fix? Or should I plug my ssd into another computer and wipe it, and start fresh? Thanks!
So I have a x220, it came with a hdd with only windows 7 installed on it. Last week, I backed up the hdd to an external drive, then tried to clone it windows 7 over to the ssd, with my usb y cable to sata cable, with my ssd plugged in, hdd still in computer. I partitioned the ssd for windows, cloned it over successfully, then installed the ssd, but windows wouldn't boot. I didn't feel like missing with windows so I reformatted my ssd to get rid of the partition, took out the hdd. and installed the ssd, put 16.04 on it, and works perfectly. Now, I would like to install windows 7 just in case I am ever going to need it, so that I could dual boot. I have no idea where to start... Can any one help me out? I am going to back up ubuntu now.
I have a lgg4 and I want to be able to text from my laptop instead of having my phone on me while I am programming. Any known SMS desktop clients that work will doing this, compatible with android and ubuntu? I don't mind having to switch sms apps on my phone, just want to be able to do it. Thanks
Just got this express card yesterday for my x220, I can't seem to find the drivers for this. Here is the card: https://www.amazon.com/Express-Chipset-Adapter-Converter-5-0Gbps/dp/B00J9PAZIO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471172235&sr=8-1&keywords=express+card+usb+3.0
I tried to google the information they listed under the selling information for downloading the drivers: " NEC/RENESAS USB3 Controller uPD720202 Drivers ", but that is not for ubuntu. i am on 16.04.. I heard these can be hard to install, can any one help me get these drivers installed and anything else I need to do to get it working?
Also, when I run: lspci -nn Nothing shows up about the card. Any help appreciated!
I ran this code: sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:fingerprint/fprint sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libfprint0 fprint-demo libpam-fprintd gksu-polkit
Then entered my fingerprint with this: fprint_demo It saved. Then I ran this line of code: fprintd-enroll
I then rebooted, it didn't work, still asked for my regular password, I checked the bios, fingerprint scanner enabled. Can any one help me get this working?
I've checked countless other forums and can't seem to figure it out. On my last laptop, on 14.04, a simple tweak of changing security to peap worked. Now, I don't know what to do. Any advice is great!
-Tried restarting multiple times -Haven't really ran any code so far -SSID and WIFI password are correct

I looked on the other forum you linked me to, I ran that line of code, rebooted, and wifi still wont work.
Installing Ubuntu 16.04.1 on laptop. Correctly partitioned my hard drive (shrunk volume) for 60gb's. Used Rufus for transferring Ubuntu onto USB drive(chose iso image), which has a capacity of 4gb's. Boot into bios. I've tried so many combinations in here, legacy modes, uefi mode, safe boot mode enabled/disabled, ranking my usb stick higher then my windows boot, and when I get to the Ubuntu installation menu, I click install Ubuntu, it takes me to enter my wifi password, I hit next, then it says not enough room, "atleast 8gb's is needed and you have only 4gb available", so it seems like it is recognizing my usb drive as my hard drive, and won't recognize anything I partitioned. So confused and frustrated as I have never before had problems installing Ubuntu, any advice is appreciated.
Here are some more images: (I have one more of the security menu, but can only post 2 links at a time because my rep is <10, I'm sure I can comment it if someone wants to see what that set up looks like)
