I am using various versions of Thunderbird on systems running 16.04.02 and 17.04MATE.

Each of these systems has a quirk that I cannot figure out.

When an email which has been identified as junk is marked as "not junk", it should be untagged and moved to the inbox. FULL STOP.

However, in every version 48.x and 52.x, Thunderbird reprocesses the mail and RE-marks it as junk and, moves it BACK into the junk folder for that account. Additionally, it creates another copy of the message such that there are now TWO messages marked as junk.

I have reset to defaults, I have adjusted global junk settings, and I have even tried to reset junk mail handling. The behaviour continues and is making Thunderbird basically unusable since I have many crypto accounts that are being ID'd as junk mail.

Looking for options which will normalize junk mail handling in Thunderbird.

The disk is a EVO850 M.2 SSD on an AMD a10-7850 processor and 32GB RAM. I am NOT using the AMD R7 graphics, but a GFX1050Ti(proprietary driver) and ASUS AC68 (Broadcom) wireless card.

There are five partitions on sda... sda1 (FAT-EFI), sda2 (ext4,Ubuntu 16.04.02), sda3 (ext4,UbuntuMATE 17.04) sda4 (ext4,data) and sda5 (SWAP)

The drive was partitioned with a live drive install of Ubuntu 16.04 BEFORE UbuntuMATE 17.04 was installed on the pre-existing sda3.

Whenever I boot into 17.04 on sda3, I am dropped to the initramfs> prompt and required to run fsck which makes PAGES of repairs. Then, I am able to boot into 17.04 normally. Even if I immediately reboot - The problem occurs again.

So far, the only applications I have used on 17.04 are Firefox, Chrome, system update and Thunderbird. I am still testing it out. (It doesn't appear to be going well)

The drive is fairly new. And, the problem never occurs when using either Windows 7 or ubuntu 16.04.02. (Windows 7 is installed on sdb1 and was installed prior to both linux distros)

Several posts here ask about this issue. But, none of them (that I have found) have followed through to a solution.

Is this a system bug with 17.04? Just MATE? or is there something I can do to stop the corruption which requires constant fsck on rebooting?

[Edit: I added the fastboot directive to the GRUB2 configuration and tried a few reboots. They went OK but, took a very long time to restart. Then, I allowed the system sit all day with applications open (Firefox, Tbird and Chrome. Next, I booted with the Live USB and ran fsck from there - 3 times. fsck reported the volumes as clean each time. I have now disabled the fastboot directive. And, the problem returned.]

I suspect Firefox may be doing something when it saves sessions to the drive. The rationale is that when it first started, Firefox was the only application that I had used and left open... I am now searching for a way to stop Firefox from writing session data, move it to another volume, or at least make sure it doesn't save sessions every 15 seconds. I'll keep trying.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

I have been looking for a solution for the problem created after approving all updates from Ubuntu on 5/10.

Thunderbird updated to version 52.1.1 during the update done from Software Updater. After that, the sidebar, which displays the various email accounts and local folders has developed a problem with the fonts. They are very thin and difficult to see.

The main window, top menus, and email text do not seem to be affected. I tried setting the default fonts in "Appearance". But, this changed nothing.

I would like to either; A) return to Thunderbird 45.8 which was working nicely. or B) fix this font display problem

No other applications are having this problem. It seems isolated to Thunderbird only.

EDIT: I discovered that this problem also affects the terminal font. However, setting the default profile font in terminal options fixes that particular problem.

EDIT2: New 17.04 install with latest Thunderbird update also displays this problem. Concluding that the problem is not transient. Figured out how to go back to 45.8 and locked it until the problem is resolved.

I don't imagine this is the first time this has been asked. But, I have not hit on the right search string to find a definitive answer.

I wish to install Ubuntu Unity and Ubuntu MATE on the same SSD. I need Ubuntu Unity for reference system. (since I am still learning). And, MATE is simply because I have a strong affinity for that desktop environment.

I tried this on another system, and (probably to no one's surprise but my own) trashed the GRUB for the originally-installed distro... Fortunately, boot-repair got both working again. But, that cannot be the right way to do this... can it?

I have already installed UM on an 80GB Partition (sda2). The mount point chosen during installation is "/".

The SSD is partitioned with GPT partition table, as follows;

sda1 EFI Boot 512MB
sda2 80GB ext4 (Ubuntu MATE) 
sda3 80GB ext4 (Empty) 
sda4 328GB ext4 (shared data)  
sda5 2GB swap

Now, I wish to install the Ubuntu 16.04 Unity's file system on the other 80GB partition, sda3, without trashing the GRUB2 boot files for UM. My assumption was that it would "see" the other OS and just "add" itself to GRUB. But, that wasn't the case previously.

I cannot choose the "install beside" option because it wants me to change my partitions, which NO. I don't want to do...So, I need to do this through the "something else" option.

The questions are:

After choosing the location for the file system (sda3). Where should I tell it to put the boot loader (sda1 EFI, I assume) and what "mount point" should I choose during the Ubuntu 16.04 Unity installation? "/" is obviously already taken.

I really just want to make sure I am doing this in such a way as to ensure that both versions are properly recognized by GRUB2.

I have successfully set up a working NFS server/client system on my local network machines. I love it!

But, having grown weary of the long delay when a mount is not available during boot-time, I decided to take @ridgy up on his suggestion to use autofs to mount the shares instead - using the information from this post.

I had firewall issues before, So, I immediately suspected the ufw might be the reason for the mounts timing out. So, I disabled ufw on server and client. And, sure enough; That got autofs working nicely. So, I am sure the basic configuration is correct.

The only other rules in ufw at this point are ALLOW rules for ports 2078 and 6589. There are no BLOCK rules set up. And, since NFS works fine with ufw on during fstab-controlled mounting, I am a bit confused as to where the blockage is occurring.

So far, I haven't found documentation on what ports/protocols are unique to autofs besides the usual NFS 111,2049 TCP/UDP.

Whenever I re-enable ufw. The shares become inaccessible again.

Any ideas?

After following your advice below to edit nfs-common and nfs-kernel-server.. I triple checked, and the edits were made exactly as shown. I rebooted and ran...

OK... So, I wonder... Where is rpc.statd ??? Additionally, my NFS shares (autofs was still disabled) were still visible from the client. even though the firewall had not been updated with the new rpc.mountd port 32767.

Installing Tor bundle from Ubuntu Software center on 16.04.

I have searched for similar cases. But only found one post, that was marked as a duplicate... But, it doesn't tell you where the duplicate is OR what the title of the duplicate is. And, I couldn't find it anywhere.

When starting the Tor Browser from the system menu (I am currently using the MATE distro of 16.04) It starts a "download" of the Tor browser. (Which is already installed from the USC...?) And, once it is finished with that, about five minutes later, I get "SIGNATURE VERIFICATION FAILED - You might be under attack, or there might just be a networking problem."

OK, So, I deactivate UFW, and the firewall on my router... then click "start" to retry the download... Now, with NO firewall active, another five minutes later, I receive the same error.

The purpose for using TOR is that I want to use an application called RetroShare with family and friends on other continents. The app requires a TOR "secrethidden space" and it's X.onion address in order to work. But, I cannot for the life of me figure out what the problem is with this TOR Browser. Documentation is (intentionally?) cryptic. It says to "do XYZ" with no hint whatsoever HOW to do XYZ or what it even means to "do XYZ".

Anyway, I have tried to follow reasonable methodology as far as I am able. But, the failures provide no clue as to what steps need to be taken to avoid the error happening over and over again. If it isn't firewall, I have no clue how to proceed.

I have moved from the experimental noob phase... into the "know enough to really jack things up good" phase.

So, now, I am starting to concentrate on the details. Such as: why I can't find a logitech wireless keyboard on which all the keys actually do what they are supposed to. The keys are not mapped properly on any of the layouts available in the keyboard list. I use a K800, K830 and K750 solar each on separate systems. I also use K750r (Japanese layout) on two machines. But, none of the Japanese layout choices map the keys properly. for example the YEN symbol is dead.

Really now... How to get various logitech keyboard mapping files for 16.04?

Now, I have seen many posts about "changing keyboard layout" But, that is not the issue here. I want to be able to "tell" or "teach" the system to use the symbols actually printed on the keys... There MUST be a simple method for doing this.

Ideally, there would be a repository for the specific logitech keyboard files available somewhere.

Any help is appreciated.

I have followed the available posts as much as possible to configure NFS on two Ubuntu machines.

I have installed the nfs-kernel-server on the host system, set up the exports on the server. I even shut down the firewall to make sure it wasn't getting in the way. The client machine also has the server installed as well as the nfs-common client package.

When I attempt to mount ANY of the shares at the client. (current mount location is /home/nfs_local). The terminal hangs with no response for a very long time, when it just says "Connection Timed Out".

I am trying to mount using this command structure to mount the shares at the client's terminal:

$ sudo mount 192.168.10.111:/home/uname /home/nfs_local

Here is what my exports currently look like in /etc/exports

Can anyone spot what I am missing here? Eventually, I want to add these to fstab to be mounted automatically on boot... OR use a script for each share... Advice on the pros/cons of this usage also greatly appreciated.

OK... I know this may not be the best place to ask this. However, the decline of AppleCorp continues. The online community is now basically useless for anything beyond the most basic templated answers... And, as far as "genius" goes... I'm pretty sure that word doesn't mean what they think it does... OK, enough of that.

I am trying to get my ubuntu 16.04 systems to access OS X 10.11.6 and MacOS 10.12.1 shares using Samba, which I have finally managed to get functioning nicely on all linux machines. None of the macs want to play ball with anyone not wearing their logo...

I can "see" the Mac's server in Network, I can click on it... And, the authorization window does pop up. I enter the correct credentials... and... after a few seconds, the authorization window reappears.

The Macs are in my hosts file. And, smb.conf uses hosts resolution AFTER WINS. The WINS server is Ubuntu. And, is doing a FINE job with the Linux boxes in the house.

In MacOS, I have shared my home folder. And, have enabled file sharing with the SMB option on. Ubuntu sees the workgroup and all servers configured within it. I just can't get past AUTH....

Ironically, MacOS can connect to the window where it shows the available shares on the Ubuntu machines... while clicking on one of them "should" trigger authorization. Instead, it closes the window and presents an error: "The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “homes” can’t be found." (SMH)

Anyone else encountered and possibly even, found a solution for this problem? more importantly, care to "share"? :-D

I awoke this morning to a blank screen... couln't wake up the system... had to hit reset.

What resulted was error: invalid magic number and error: load kernel first...

Pressing continue sends me to the grub menu where none of the options allow me to boot into the system. They all get the same errors.

I literally did nothing to the system yesteday except use Chromium to check social media site. No updates were authorized... nothing changed.

My system drive is a Samsung EVO 840 SSD.

How can I fix this and get back in?

I booted into Live CD just to see if anything changed. but, I have no idea what to do once I get "in".

Can/Will anyone please help with setting up Samba correctly on Ubuntu 16.04? I have been through several posts on various forums, and have installed the server, the client, a few other things that proved completely useless, followed various instructions for editing the smb.conf and still I cannot find anything that will....

Of course, I want to share files between machines. But, primarily need samba to "see" the home shares on the ReadyNAS 316. Nautilus can connect. It can see the server in the workgroup. And, it can even see the other folders in the /data/ directory... But, neither the "home" folder not any of the shares in the home folder can be seen. I can use samba to connect to the ReadyNAS from any number of other machines (mainly OS X) even my ipad will connect to the server. home folder access is not a problem from any other OS...

But, Linux refuses to do this seemingly basic task.

This seems to me to be one of the things that should be just a matter of setting up the path... user... and pass... But, that has definitely proven to NOT be the case with any of the networking stratgies in Linux... so far. NFS,SMB,AFP have all been impossible for me to set up. So, yeah... I have ONE handful of hair left after all the pulling. Please help me save it.

Ubuntu 16.04 Canon Printer installation problems...

The major obstacle to adopting Linux exclusively in my small business, is the monumental hassle, and apparent impossibility of a "regular joe" having any chance of getting any network printer working properly.

I have been at it for literally WEEKS now. And, the obstacles seem to be insurmountable. I have previously requested assistance with an Epson Laser LP-S5000. It seems no one has the answer for that... or isn't sharing.

Now, I have TWO Canon Inkjets that simply will not work as network printers. (iX6830 and MG6930) Both work with the computer they are directly connected to... One MacOS 10.11.6, one Ubuntu 16.04.

BELIEVE me... I have tried the network printer installation options offered in the system. I have tried to understand PPD files (But, cannot locate any for these printers) and ipp/dns connections. I have read about CUPS and Gutenprint. And, quite frankly am at a loss to understand how the writers could possibly expect someone without a computer science degree to comprehend it.

The only output I have been able to achieve is multiple pages with escape characters printed in the upper corners.

What I am looking for is someone who has already solved this problem... understands this problem... And, the location of a post or article with real answers as to how to do this. Otherwise, it is just impossible to install a network printer.

Linux simply cannot be a part of our lives if it cannot print.

On this system, the airplane mode indicator is always on. fn+f2 does nothing.

The light under the key stays on.

Toggling airplane mode to "ON" in settings DOES turn the light off and disables wifi.

Similar posts have been found. but, related to 12.04, not 16.04. And, no solutions were offered anyway.

I suspect that this may be related to another problem with always running hot and on "battery" when AC is attached. But, honestly, I am completely lost.

Any help would be appreciated.

I found previous posts regarding this. But, they applied only to version 14. And, the solution was not included as part of the thread.

Does anyone have suggestions for getting ubuntu to recognize when the system is on AC power?

Battery indicator says "Using battery power"... Power options are not helpful in this instance. System is plugged in and the battery power light is illuminated.
