If my Ubuntu device is connected to a dual-band WiFi SSID that uses both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi, then my understanding is that it will automatically switch between the two bands depending on which one has a stronger signal/better data rate. Is there any way to check which band my device is currently using?

Similarly to this question, I find that when a wireless mouse with low battery is plugged into a laptop running Ubuntu 18.04 on battery power, the screen automatically dims after 15 seconds of inactivity, even if the Power setting "Dim screen when inactive" is set to "Off". This doesn't make any sense to me - why would the dimming the screen help preserve power in the mouse?
15 seconds is very inconveniently short - how can I disable this automatic screen dimming? I do not have any power management programs like jupiter or tlp installed. This answer suggests running
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay <seconds>
on the terminal, but that doesn't change anything for me. Disabling DPMS as suggested in this answer doesn't work either. The only thing that works is unplugging the mouse and restarting my computer, which is obviously kind of annoying.
As in this question, I found that when I set "Settings -> Dock -> Auto-hide the Dock" to "On", the dock almost completely covers the leftmost column of desktop icons:
This makes it very difficult to see or select those icons. (I can manually drag them out from under the dock, but then e.g. clicking "arrange icons by name" or changing the dock auto-hide settings moves them back under it again.)
Unlike the OP for the linked question, whose preferred solution is to hide the dock when there are no windows covering it, I would prefer the icons to default to locations that are not covered by the dock, as they do when the dock is not set to auto-hide. Is there any way to do this?
I just installed 18.04 (Bionic Beaver). I noticed that when I search my applications for the word "Software", there are three different software-update-manager type things preinstalled (maybe they're not all exactly software update managers, but they all have "update software" in their description) - "Ubuntu Software", "Software & Updates", and "Software Updater":
Isn't this a bit confusing and duplicative? What are the differences between the three applications, and is there any reason they aren't combined into just one or two applications?
I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver. I've installed the KDE Connect application. (FWIW I do not have KDE Connect Indicator installed as the application seems to be working okay without it.) But it gives me an annoying little phone icon in the system tray (top-right corner of the screen) which I can't seem to get rid of - if I right-click on it, the only option is "Configure" but that menu isn't helpful. How can I hide this icon?
