Why is the compose key (AltGr) disabled by default?

  • 1

The compose key (usually AltGr) is used to make it easier to insert alternate characters and symbols using easy to remember character sequences. Here is a useful list with the available characters and symbols.

This key is disabled by default in Ubuntu and can be enabled as shown here: How can I enable Compose key?

But why is this key disabled by default in the first place?

Catfish does not follow symbolic links

  • 5

I am dual booting Xubuntu 18.04 and Windows 10. I mainly use Xubuntu and occasionally Windows. To have my files accessible from both operating systems, I store my Documents, Music, etc folders in an NTFS partition and I symlink them to my Xubuntu home directory using ln.

Now, Catfish does not find a file in, e.g. Documents when I search from home directory. However, if I change the directory to Documents it does.

As I understand it, the problem is that Catfish does not follow symbolic links. However, I don't see any option that enables it to follow them. Am I missing something out? How to make Catfish follow symlinks?

gnome-shell process high ram usage in 17.10

  • 15

I am using Ubuntu 17.10 with the default Ubuntu desktop (no extensions added) and my computer has 4 GB of RAM. I noticed that every time I use Gnome Shell, either by pressing the Super key, Super+A, Super+Tab or by clicking an element on the top bar, the RAM usage of the gnome-shell process increases by a couple of MB. This doesn't seem much of a problem, but after some hours of work gnome-shell usage climbs higher than 1.5 GB, with the total RAM usage being close on 4 GB. Then swap is starts getting filled up, making my computer extremely slow.

Does anyone else notice the same behavior? Why does gnome-shell memory keep adding up? Is there a way to clear gnome-shell memory usage other than logging out?
