I'm in the US so a page is 8.5 inches by 11 inches ie. letter size orientation PORTRAIT

Whether it is an existing Writer document or a simple document of a few lines, it looks portrait oriented but when printed to a physical printer, it comes out in landscape orientation. Also a simple calc spreadsheet does the same thing.

Libreoffice as it comes with Ubuntu 23.10 or before (in my case that would be Ubuntu 22.04) - does not have the problem.

My printers are Canon iX6820, which are able to take paper up to about tabloid size - which is larger than the typical letter or legal size.

I'm hearing other large format printers, such as Epson Stylus Pro 3880 have a similar issue.

A bash shell exists on a USB thumb drive. The USB drive is formatted NTFS If mounted with pmount, a few things don't work:

1. I cannot run the shell as it has permissions 600
2. I cannot change permissions although my ID shows as owner of the file

If the USB drive is mounted via file manager (mine is Thunar - the GUI of XFCE which is the GUI for XUbuntu) or if it's mounted by disks (Which I believe is really gnome-disk).

1. No problems running shells - the one I want has permissions 777
2. I cannot change permissions but in this instance I don't need to.

Why can't I pmount the drive then run the shell? Probably related, and not as significant - what's with the inability to change permissions?

It is not. The answer in that question is a mount command. Such a mount command requires sudo and getting this mounted without resorting to sudo makes this a very different situation. Also, that referenced question is primarily about chmod. The primary reason chmod was brought up is because the original permissions after pmounting were 600, which would need to change prior executing the shell. chmod is not necessary here, if the pmount command includes --exec and --fmask 000.

A program, pwrstat as an example, can be run by ordinary user IDs if the setuid (chmod 4xxx) is set and, the file is owned by root. When the setuid permission is set, the entity is run as if by the owner of the file. If that is root, it implies root's privileges. It should follow that if a shell has setuid and, is owned by root, it should run with root's privileges. An example would be

Yet someone other than root running the example shell (with permission -rwsr-xr-x) gets permission denied on the copy.

OK, a program works, a shell doesn't. I tried creating a simple C program that uses

system ()

Same result.

The main question here is why setuid is not allowing a shell to be run as root. A sub-question is why a C program cannot issue the commands that would be in that shell?

Some of the high reputation users are voting to close this question as it is similar to previous questions EXCEPT, Those previous questions and answers are complex. Please don't forget many users here would probably get lost in the uids, setuid, seteuids and what-not which make sense to those who are probably ready to sit a linux adminstration certification exam.

pmount works from a command line to mount a USB drive (and unmount with pumount). Pmount requires knowing which device and partition to mount. If I plug in a thumb drive and if I'm on a GUI, I can use gnome-disks to determine if the specific thumb drive I'm wanting to mount is /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdc1 or perhaps /dev/sde1. It will even confirm what the volume label name is - all without resorting to sudo.

How can I obtain similar information at a command line without resorting to sudo? (device/partition)

Within Xfburn the default action is to eject a disc when the burn is complete. How would I change that default setting to not eject a disc when the burn is complete?

Current system is Xubuntu 24.04

I needed to roll forward to Ubuntu 24.04 this past May. Many here suggest waiting for the first point release, possibly coming in August. At some point after that point release comes out, will those who took the initial Ubuntu 24.04.0 also be updated by the usual
apt-get upgrade

A command

chmod -R 775 /home/den/backup/*.sh  

responds with

No such file or directory  

I know there are shells within that structure, specifically some at /home/den/backup/shells

What is wrong with my command?

Using the zip command, I am sometimes getting the following error:
*** buffer overflow detected ***: terminated
Some file names in the material being backed up contain sight single quotation marks, (ascii code E2 80 99). This is only a problem when using zip on ubuntu 24.04. It works on ubuntu 22.04.

On Xubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 If a thunderbird mailbox is on a SAMBA controlled Ubuntu mount, starting thunderbird I am getting the error screen which begins:

Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To use Thunderbird, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, restart your device, or use a different profile.

I've tried having 22.04 own the mailbox with 24.04 having access through a SAMBA mount to 22.04 - this failure on 24.04 - sucess on 22.04 (ie the system where it actually resides.)

Accessing the SAMBA mounted mailbox which actually resides on Ubuntu 22.04 from a Ubuntu 16.04 has always succeeded and still does.

If I delete .parentlock - it still fails

I've had instances in the past of permission problems on a mailbox - permissions are wide open (set to 777 ie. wrxwrxwrx) on every part of the mailbox

I've checked for thunderbird running with ps -ef | grep "hunder" No active process contains that string.

My mailboxes are shared across several systems by being mounted at a specific mount location - always the same mount point on all systems. My Xubuntu 16.04 and my Xubuntu 22.04 are able to get to the mailbox. Only the new 24.04 is failing with this error.

I've tried the snap version and, a manual install from a Mozilla tar ball. Always the same failure.

The version of libreoffice included in 24.04 is based on a version at or above 7.5.0.0. As of that version a bug, or regression, LO bug 154975 (https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=154975) was introduced. As a result, LO print requests to large format printers, such as my Canon iX6820 cannot be printed with portrait orientation to standard 8.5x11 paper.

Using a tar ball from documentfoundation.org for a release prior to 7.5.0.0, how would the downgrade be accomplished system wide? The tar ball of version 7.4.7.2, the last prior to the bug, consists of 42 .deb files.

When Ubuntu 24.04 comes out in about 2 days, there is probably going to be some important things that need fixing. Will the initial .iso file for the release be updated as needed to reflect such changes or, will it rely solely on "apt-get upgrade" for these initial corrections.

Said another way, is it worth waiting a couple weeks before downloading the new release .iso file?

Upgraded from DSL to Cable internet. Previously a 2Wire modem/router was used. Now a Netgear CM500 is the modem and a TP-Link Archer A7 is the router. Machines on the LAN cannot see one another. File sharing does not work.

xrdp has been working fine with XUBUNTU 16.04 but on a fresh install of XUBUNTU 18.04, my attempts to remote log-in always result in failure. A small portion of the xrdp.log is:

Grep with -r was not working for me.

I then made a test situation. The directory /home/den/backup now contains a file with the word washer in it. I also made a subdirectory within /home/den/backup. In that directory a file contains the word washer. The following should return two hits at /home/den/backup/great.txt and /home/den/backup/aaa/info.txt

If I issue

grep -r "washer" /home/den/backup/*.*

the result is one hit.

If I issue

grep -r "washer" /home/den/backup/aaa/*.*

the result is one hit.

Shouldn't the first one have also found the second one, which is in one if its sub-directories?

The systems are at different kernel levels Two systems each running XUBUNTU 16.04. When ufw (firewall) is disable, both give a full list of shares, some of which are Ubuntu while others are Windows XP. If the ufw firewall is enabled, one of the systems continues to give a list of shares, the other one does not. - Both are current per the software updater - The working one was brought to 16.04 two years ago (kernel is 4.4.0-133-generic) - The failing one was recently installed from a downloaded DVD image (kernel is 4.15.0-32-generic) then configured using the working one as a reference for configurations etc.

ufw shows the following rules, which are identical except for order

A probably unrelated curious thing is that any time I enable the ufw (firewall), my remote (xrdp) session freezes but only on the system that returns nothing to smbtree with firewall enabled.

Two Ubuntu 16.04 systems, one has been running about two years now. Just today I created another Ubuntu 16.04 system first from a recently burned DVD install disk then updated with several packages I know I need as well as running the updater.

The new system hangs on mount commands to XP shares, example: mount -t cifs -o user=guest,passwd=,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777,noperm //toller/z /media/z

The other XP system handles the mount command just fine

The new system does not hand if a similar mount is directed to a share on a Ubuntu system

XP systems can mount a share that exists on the new Ubuntu system

Filewall makes no difference a) disabling it - no change and b) identical rules to the two year old Ubuntu system

XP has a limit on the number who can access a share - not an issue - did a umount on the working system then new system gives same hang then old system mounts some thing again.

It's as if there is some small step or package which was not done on the new Ubuntu 16 system.

Within the screen, going to APPLICATIONS -> SETTING then DISPLAY the response is Unable to Start the Xfce display settings This system is using RandR 1.1. For the display settings to work version 1.2 is required at least
