gnome-shell crashed at some point and, upon reloading, all the text and almost all icons in the title bar, task bar, menus, and prompts are garbled.
I have a process that's been running for a week now; if it restarts, there's no way to recover the progress and I would have to start from scratch. So, I'm looking for a way to resolve this without killing the processes I currently have running.

My computer just froze and I was forced to reboot.
I just went to shut down my laptop and it asked me to authenticate before I could reboot. This has never happened before, so I figured maybe a recent update changed something. After a quick search, I found that this happens when multiple users are logged in. ...odd. I'm the only one logged in. Or am I?

One of those logins is the tty7/regular login, the other is the terminal I'm running to open the command.
So, why is shutdown asking for authentication even when I exit all terminals?
After upgrading to 14.04.3 from 14.04.2 (started with 14.04.1), my kernel is still at 3.13.0-61-generic — I'm expecting a variant of 3.19.
How can I upgrade to include the default kernel from 14.04.3?

This age-old problem seems to never go away.
There are thousands of threads related to Wi-Fi dropping constantly. Unfortunately, almost all of them seem to have quick hack suggestions and no real explanation of what the hack actually does, and no detail on how to debug your system to properly determine if this hack is indeed what you should try.
In this question, I am asking for an aggregate guide to properly debug this issue and the solutions to the most common issues.
My goal here is to have a single go-to thread that those with similar issues can walk through and resolve their problems (rather than opening a new question every, single, time).
PS: I was inspired to open this thread when my MacBook Pro suddenly started hanging & dropping wifi every few minutes after either a recent kernel or Broadcom update. Searching found no real solutions and I have yet to resolve it.
In this question, we learn how to select ONE display to show the Unity launcher on in a 2-screen setup.
My question is: How can we use the Unity launcher in MULTIPLE displays, but not all of them?
For example, the following shows three screens with the launcher enabled on all of them:
The only GUI setting I can use to modify this is "Launcher placement" but only allows selecting ONE display:
The end result I'm looking for is to turn OFF the launcher on the vertical (right-hand) screen, but keep them on the left-hand screens.
I travel to countries I don't trust--a lot. For example, Vietnam, the virus capital of the world. ESPECIALLY in these areas, but also at home in the USA, I want to remove (or reduce) the possibility that someone is intercepting my auto-updates connection and feeding my computer bogus packages.
My solution is to switch to a mirror using HTTPS. But I don't want to pick just any HTTPS server, I want to select the fastest one. "Select Best Server" is available for HTTP (maybe it includes HTTPS, but it never selects HTTPS). Is there any way to run the same tests searching ONLY mirrors available over HTTPS?
I've never heard of this happening, so I'm baffled and not sure where to begin debugging.

I have no idea how/why nginx is appearing to be used. I've personally never installed it. I did recently do a "software update" via the GUI updater.
My apt/history.log does mention installing nginx, but I did not run that command (I checked my bash history):

Another way to word the question is...
mv a directory between two disks?Does it move one file after the other, or does it copy all files to destination, then then delete directory from the source?
If it copies everything first then deletes it, I can presume it is safe to force quit the mv operation. Otherwise, it can be dangerous and cp may be preferred for more intensive/larger moves.
I had Ubuntu 13.04 installed on my laptop.
Rather than upgrading, I decided to install 14.04 fresh on a new SSD.
So, I have two drives. One with 13.04 and my old data, and one with 14.04. Both Ubuntu instances were installed using the default "Erase disk and install Ubuntu" option with LVM checked.
I'm trying to mount my old drive, now, to migrate data over. However, the name for the name for the LVM partition is the same and thus not allowing it to appear.
How can I get around this? Can I rename it?

I just installed Wubi fresh (Win 7; Ubuntu 12.10).
After booting into Ubuntu for the first time, my first instinct is to:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
However, I'm quickly prompted with:
[user] is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
I checked user settings and it appears that there are NO admin accounts:
How can I resolve this? And why did Wubi set me up with a non-admin account?
I am able to copy a massive string of text but unable to paste it anywhere without the program crashing.
So, I wonder: How can I fetch it from the clipboard via CLI and save it to a file instead?

Imagine my directory looked like this:

I essentially want to replace every blah.* file with the contents of original. My initial try was to do this:
$ cp original.txt blah.*
But I get:
cp: target ``blah.1.txt' is not a directory
Let's say I'm developing a script for login.example.com. I have absolutely no access to login.example.com, but that page loads a script on assets.example.com (which I have access to). To test how well my new script works on the production login page, I changed my /etc/hosts to point assets.example.com to my localhost (and set up Apache accordingly).
The only problem now is that the login page loads https://assets.example.com/script.js (Again, I have no influence on this!). So in order for me to test my script, I need to set up a self-signed SSL cert.

I also tried using the default-ssl to test it to no avail. I simply constantly get SSL connection error:

I've seen a ton of tutorials on how to move your home directory to a separate partition.
I want to do the opposite.
I have two HDDs. One /home/ and the other is everything else (both drives have only one partition). I want to use one of the hard drives for another project. So, I'd like to move the home directory and system files back onto a single drive.

Context: Ubuntu 11.10, Unity
Let's say I have a screen at resolution 1000x500.
I have one sound card and one pair of Bluetooth headphones. I want to play my audio through both my sound card and my Bluetooth headphones.
I believe Windows has checkboxes that allow you to "check" outputs to enable/disable them, but Ubuntu seemingly has the equivalent of radio selectors (you can only select one at a time).
Bonus question: On a similar note, I have 5 analog output channels on my sound card (in addition to my digital & HDMI audio) -- I would like to be able to determine what comes out of each of those ports (e.g. "front speakers" on all 5 or "front", "center", "back", etc).
Here's what I mean:
I normally install by running a Ubuntu Live USB, clicking "try" Ubuntu, and when I'm ready, I double-click the "Install Ubuntu" icon on the desktop.
Now, I have an eSATAp port and what I'd like to do is connect my hard drive directly to my laptop/desktop which already has Ubuntu running on it and simply run that same application that's available on the Live CD/USB to install it on the external drive.
I'm open to other methods as well, as long as I don't have to "burn" an ISO to a USB, then reboot from the USB, then install it to the external drive.

I bought a pin-based-USB powered internal media card reader and it worked perfectly when I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 a month ago. I used it a few times since and today I booted up the computer and it's not working.
Here's how it used to work:
nautilus->computer, 5 "drives" would display even when no card was inserted.Now:

I tried using ubuntu-bug but for USB devices it expects you to be able to remove and insert them while the computer is running (obviously this is something you probably shouldn't be doing when you're dealing with devices plugged straight into the USB pins).
